We spent 10 nights at the Avista hotel with friends from 6/4 until 16/4. We had a wonderful stay! The rooms were comfortable, very clean and spacious, the staff was friendly and welcoming, the whole hotel was very clean, the breakfast was of a high quality and with a large choice of food as well as the restaurant, the service was excellent. We absolutely recommend this hotel and we will come back without hesitation for our next holidays in Phuket. Thank you to all the staff.

Flew in from NZ on the 5th April for a 11night break. We were given a 5th floor room at the back of the hotel. No sea or pool view but it overlooked the town and hills to the rear and was spacious, clean and had AIRCON which enabled us to get out of the 36oc heat and 100% humidity. Spacious and clean but at the back! Maybe if we had waited we would of been given a better room but we just needed to get out of the heat after our journey. I am on crutches so two lifts were needed to access my room and the staff asked almost every day if the room was acceptable and to our needs. We were unpacked now and in our view a room is just a room !
The hotel staff are wonderful, attend to ones every whim. Breakfast was great. Nice selection of Thai food, cereal, cooked meats, English breakfast, fruit, fresh juice etc etc etc. Have no idea how anyone can ever complain about this. The kids (3 of them) even went back for seconds if we ate early....greedy. I had traditional Thai breakfast 9 morning in a row, lovely.
The pools. Main one up a few steps from restaurant with sun loungers all down one side....good for late morning to evening sun. The smaller pool outside the restaurant attracted mostly families with younger children. Both pools are around 1.3m deep and there is also a toddler pool which is really shallow. Water jets/falls from the top pool to the lower. Nice until kids find they can access the jets from the main pool and squirt the bathers below BUT it was 35oc so not too bothered. Good for morning sun and plenty of shade if needed. The tiles around the pool ARE very slippy when wet, saw many a kid slip when running !! Pool bar has "happy hour" which entitles you to 20% off, which sometimes was crowded.
Loads of different nationalities. Yanks, Aussies, Dutch, German, Poms and Russians. Don't want to put a downer on those ruskie friends but they really need to lighten up, show some gratitude and "No" they don't own Thailand yet !! The atmosphere was sometimes a little subdubed on a few days, but Poms and the Dutch are usually chatty.
Lunch from the hotel were of good quality, but maybe a little expensive, but that's expected.
Now the "hill". If you don't know the Avista sits at the top of a hill and a steep hill at that. I have a broken Femur and was on crutches. Getting down it wasn't a problem and achieved the climb back up twice. Why???? I could of easily got a tuk tuk to and from Kata for 200thb but wanted to do it and if I can do it on crutches...twice, it cant be that bad.
Now expect "smells" in Thailand and some of them not too pleasant by half. It took us maybe 3 or 4 days to get used to these, some places are worse than others....be warned.
Kata beach is sunbed city. 200thb will hire you 2 sunbeds and sunshade for the day. Maybe 2 or 3 rows of beds then the rest of the beach is empty to the sea. South end is busy where hotels are and plenty of Ruskies. North is a tad quieter but there is a small stream that flows through the town and comes out at the far north of the beach...avoid by at least 100m. Food shacks line the verges under the shade of the trees. Cheap, TASTY food and drink. The beach and sea can be littered and don't expect crystal clear water until at least 100meters out from beach. Power boats access the beach from 2 or 3 points, paragliding, jet skis available and boat trips. This is NOT unspoilt Thailand its a resort.
Best advice on haggling is go into a normal shop first. There is what looks like a "shoe" shop half way down the high street which is really a great 3 floor retail outlet. You can here and aim to pay at least 20% or less than this when haggling in the markets.
I read all the restaurant ratings before I left for the holiday. Top 10 and all that.......doesn't mean a thing. Basically all eateries are good, seems the first one you go in sticks in your mind and everything is compared to that. Never had a bad meal....any where. Do a left about half way down Kata high street and youll come across a thatched bar where you can get a beer for 100thb. Its stands next to food stalls where the cook you fresh chicken, pork or prawn kebabs. Whole of half chickens, belly pork and chips. Tasty tasty tasty and we had a great feed and beers for 500thb. Plus a fantastic cocktail bar there, just a stall really. Excellent cocktails for 100thb......brilliant. Most evenings Elvis sings on stage too..........."no, he is not dead".
One last thing, book transport from the airport. its about an hours drive to the Avista. We used Phuket Shuttles (they have a website) 1200thb Waiting for us when we got off plane so didn't need to wait of haggle for taxis. You learn about the taxi mafia when there. Every group of tuk tuks is run by one guy and a set price is given out. But still not expensive.
Im waffling now and want to go back....its an experience and a holiday is only what you make of it so make the most of the friendly Thai people, the lovely Avista and the fantastic food.
Better stop or it will turn into a novel.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but why would you want to spend your holiday in a room !!!!

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights from 04 April in room 423. We had an absolutely fantastic time at this hotel after travelling in other parts of Thailand and Cambodia.

We are a well travelled couple in our late 30's and really felt that this was an excellent standard of hotel.

Our room was immaculate - finished to a really high standard and really well kept.

The restaurant, bar, pool and public areas were also beautiful and really inviting.

The quality of breakfast was excellent. I did see some comments before we travelled that the options were limited. Not sure what these people expected for breakfast but we thought the selection and service were both excellent.

The food quality and service in the main restaurant for lunch and dinner was also excellent - the staff seem very well trained and made us feel very welcome.

All credit to the front office team and the guest relations team - friendly, helpful, knowledgable and always willing and trying to go the extra mile to please guests. Our holiday was to celebrate my husbands birthday and the team had organised a cake and special message on the bed in flowers which was a really nice touch.

We have travelled all over the world and we felt that this was one of the best hotels we have stayed in, especially considering the price paid.

The hill outside the hotel really is steep, and hard work in the heat but is only about 200 meters and tuk tuks are reasonably priced and easily accessible for those not wanting to walk it.

We absolutely loved the hotel and felt that the standards offered were excellent we would recommend this hotel to anyone and would not hesitate to return if we re-visited Phuket.

Stayed here for 8 nights and couldn't fault any aspect of our stay. The staff were all friendly and welcoming and couldn't do enough to assist the guests. Rooms are spacious and comfortable and well equipped. We had a pool view room on the 3rd floor but was upgraded to a club room on the 5th floor, both had great views. The walk up to the hotel wasn't ever a major issue, but never looked forward to it, especially if we had been out drinking! :-) Would recommend this hotel to anyone and would certainly return.

Based on previous guest reviews we had very high expectations but reality was even better. The rooms are huge, have a very high quality of equipment, the equipment is very modern and, particularly, the bathroom was very modern/high quality. The hotel resort is very clean too, housekeeping services are really good. The walls of the corridors are in light brown colour such that the corridors look a bit dark but this was ok for us, i.e. it is a matter of taste.
What we enjoyed most was the service in the hotel. The hotel stuff (at all levels) is very polite (even politer than in Thailand on average). The only problem we had was that the waiters in the restaurants never asked us whether we want some more food or drinks after our first order although we would have liked to order more and although there were many waiters and only few guests. This behaviour might be typical for Thailand but I think the waiters could be better trained.
Hotel guests are internationally mixed from all age groups, including families with young children. It was a very nice atmosphere among guests, very calm (with the exception of young playing children but that’s life), nobody really disturbed us.
Hotel restaurant: Great selection and good quality of food during breakfast. What I missed was sparkling water, they just offer iced drinking water. We also had often lunch and dinners at the hotel restaurant. The prices are higher than in town but the food quality is really good (fresh food, nicely prepared), they offer a mixture of Western and Thai food and organize buffets during special events (e.g. weekly barbecue). The restaurant was quite empty because most guests eat in restaurants in town. We would have eaten more often in the hotel restaurant if the prices had been slightly lower. Particularly the prices for house wine were too high. This is the simple law of price and demand, the hotel management should think about it.
Hotel pool: Small area but really nice. In the past we never went to pool areas in hotel resorts but this time we spend a lot of time at the pool. Really great.
Regarding the criticism that the hotel is located on a hill: OK, if you are very old and/or handicapped walking up about 150 meters a steep street might be a problem but everybody else complaining is really lazy. We were very happy about the location on the hill because it is a very calm area (in contrast to the other resorts we saw that are located at loud streets).

Tripadvisor contributors have steered us well around Thailand.

I always felt that this may not quite live up to expectations after the luxury of Bangkok and the Charm of Chang Mai but I tried to loosen these pre conceived ideas before we got there.

Truth is, this hotel is very very good.

The service is smiley and attentive to all your needs.
We asked if they could book us a table at a local restaurant for dinner and within seconds we had a call back saying (what turned out to be) a lovely table had been booked for us.
Would not recommend buying tours through reception though, they can be bought a lot cheaper down the road, but you expect that.

The room is spacious and mood lighting can be set by bedside controls.
The bed very comfy (they offer you choice of pillows).
You are shown the fridge where they explain there are two bottles of water, two soft drinks and also two Chang beers supplied anew free each day you stay.

Now she was winning me over..!

The pool area very nice and the food and drink equally so.

The breakfast range is very good and you should not want for anything.

The hotel is up the hill about 150m from the beach which is a little steep, but sometimes you just have to work off that breakfast or that extra bottle of Chang!

The hotel food and drink prices?
Well they are just good quality hotel prices.
Not cheap by Thai standards as we have discovered, but reasonable when compared to other countries.

In short, this hotel delivered what other Tripadvisor contributors had already said and laid my pre conceived ideas to rest.

Well recommended.

A great hotel and the service is second to none. This was our second trip to Avista and we were welcomed with a personal card and cake saying 'welcome back', a nice touch! A special mention to Angelique who provided us with fantastic service. Always asking how our day was, taking time out to chat to my children and being able to address any concerns immediately.

We stayed in the Grand Deluxe room, having two young children aged 7 and 9, it was extremely comfortable for our needs. We were on Level 4 and this afforded ocean glimpses and a nice outlook. It also has a great sized balcony with two comfortable chairs which was a nice place to relax and enjoy the ambience with a glass of wine or beer!

The pools were great. The pool on the bottom level is designed with children in mind and has a smaller shallow pool next to it. The main pool has a pool bar with happy hour between 3 and 5:00 each day. Prices are fine and the cocktail selection caters for most people!

We used the kids club for an hour whilst my wife and I had a massage and the children loved it. It is run by two great Thai ladies who were excellent.

The hill to the resort is steep, however for all of the food and drinks consumed on holidays, we thought of it as forced exercise. There is always the option of getting a Tuk Tuk for those that do not want to walk up the hill - for us though, it took 3 minutes maximum!

My only suggestion for improvement would be to place a toilet near the pool, perhaps next to the gym. The nearest toilet is at the restaurant at the entrance to the resort, which is a decent walk and involved walking through he restaurant each time. This was an issue raised by some of the other guests we spoke too whilst we were there. That is the only negative though, we have already booked our trip back! A great location and a great hotel!

Room Tip: Request a higher level if possible - Level 4 and 5 have the best views.
