Before we booked this place, we did notice the few bad reviews about this hotel but we decided to take a punt on the Avista – biggest mistake of our otherwise amazing 2 weeks in Thailand.

NO FACILITIES
We arrived at the hotel which had a relatively 80s look about it (although very modern lighting facilities) – a storm (we were told) had taken out the elevator, the phone, the wireless internet and the spa and recreation rooms are flooded etc… Being a hotel in a monsoon prone location, you would think they would be better prepared for thunder storms.

We stayed here for 5 days and each day we were told these facilities will be up and running the next day…the wait continued but nothing worked even when we left.

BIG HILL
The hill that other reviewers wrote about…it’s really very very (very) bad. We thought we could brave it and it would be great exercise. Allow me to paint another picture for you…it’s 30+ degrees Celsius, you are sweaty, tired and there is a almost vertical hill that you have to scale before you get back to your room – after which you then need to climb up 4 flights of stairs. The hill needs to be seen to be appreciated – it’s very steep.

THE OTHER CONS
* Compared to other hotels around the area, this hotel is very poorly located given the hill and the seclusion (the inconvenient type – not the nice romantic type). Hotel taxis are almost double the public ones.
* The hotel advertises "free bus shuttles" to other locations such as Patong – we call up 2 days in advance & it’s always booked. I called 4 times, it was booked 4 times.
* The housekeeping was disgusting – sheets were stained and the bed linen had big coffee stains on it. Mugs were put back into the bars without being washed. The towels were not changed every day even after we requested this and I ended up wiping myself from a dirty hand towel from the day before.
* Service was poor for a 4 star resort and definitely poor for Thai standards.
* Breakfast area is humid and it's very busy all morning.

PROS
To be fair, this hotel did have some pros:
* The breakfast selection was really good which was included in the room rates
* Nice greeting at the beginning – cold towel & a fruit punch on arrival at the hotel (although it went all down hill from there…)
* Lovely pool area with nice waterfall
* Modern electrical fit out
* No mosquitoes - the hotel is very conscientious about spraying the rooms and hotel generally around the day to prevent mosquitoes.

Unfortunately, I would not be recommending this hotel – even without all the electrical failures which downgraded the hotel from luxury to inconvenient, the location itself is a show stopper and the housekeeping was dismal. It was such a shame. Also, for those not familiar with the island, Kata is definitely not that great. Karon on the other hand was a much nicer beach.

We booked the Avista resort 2 months prior to arrival and stayed for 6 nights at 4000 bhat/night for a club room with a great sea view. The hotel is like a good 4 star hotel.
Positive
- club rooms have a great sea view and are spacy with flat screen TV
- nice pool area with a separate section for families and kids
- staff were very attentive, service minded and most spoke English
- decent breakfast
- the beach and city is 5 min walk away
- quiet at night
- free shuttle to beach and Patong
- free Internet with decent speed
Negative
- A little pricy for what you get
- Very small gym with limited equipment
- You had to get up early (8:30) to reserve sunbeds by the pool
- Hard mattresses

My wife and I were recently on our honeymoon in Thailand and stayed in Kata Beach for about four nights. We originally had another room at a different hotel booked but upon checking in we were utterly disappointed and were then stuck looking for other accommodations. We somehow came across Avista and booked through their website as the rates were very reasonable and the property looked decent.

We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The hotel is new construction and everything is in great shape. We were greeted by very friendly staff along with a nice cold drink, a cold towel, and an orchid bracelet.

Our room had a view over the pool and we could make out the ocean in the background. The design was contemporary/modern and the bathroom well laid out with a shower and bath. Read some reviews of people complaining about the visibility into the bathroom from the room but there is a blind you can simply pull down. It's not an issue.

Breakfast is served daily and was on par with what you would expect from a nice resort. The pool had a swim up bar with cold drinks and actually contained cooler water so you had the opportunity to prevent over heating ;)

All in all we were very pleased with this hotel and both my wife and I travel often for business and pleasure. We would definitely stay at this hotel again if we are ever in Kata. One thing worth mentioning however is that the hotel is not located right on the beach and is actually on top of a small hill. Its a little bit of a walk but if your healthy then it's not a problem. We also had rented a motor scooter but did walk the hill several occasions and it didn't bother us one bit. But if you're older or aren't mobile you may need to rent a car or just take a taxi back to the top.

Had a fantastic stay in this hotel in March, 2010. Visited Phuket with my wife, parents and aunty. This is a new and excellent property. I would in summary say the following:

Pros: Excellent rooms. Very very new. Attention to detail in the room is great.LCD TVs etc. etc. Great bathrooms with tub and shower both. Lots of towels. Very good breakfast spread. Lots to choose from. Nice 2 level pool. Exellent service. All the staff are well trained and are extremely courteous. They never fail to help or greet any of the guests. ALways smiling, they try to make everyone comfortable. All phone calls (to house keeping, reception etc.) were promptly answered to. Requests for extra tea/coffee sachets were cheerfully attended to. Very good and competent General Manager. Took personal care of us.

Cons: None. Only con that I could think of is that it is located on a steep hill. Bit of a climb but not a big deal, the climb is manageable. If someone has mobility problems, he/she can take the shuttle.

Overall: One of the best holidays I have ever had. Service wise, probably the best service I have got in my life (believe me, I have stayed in a lot of hotels across Asia and this one would rate on top in service). A small metion on the service levels-We had 2 rooms. We retained one room for a late checkout and checked out from the other one as per stipulated time. Unfortunately we forgot the printouts of our air tickets and my wife's pregnancy certificiate (needed for flying) and some other important papers in the room we checked out from. We realised this only in the night when we were checking out. We called the reception and they promptly despatced someone to look for the papers. The papers were probably thrown away by the housekeeping who cleaned the room. We thought we had lost them. However when we were checking out (paying our bills) we see that one of the hotel staff has retrieved the papers (from the dustbin or wherever they were thrown) and was running to the reception to hand them over to us!!! Man we were relieved and blown away by the stupendous service. Hats off to the staff and the management to train their staff in such a manner!

Overall it is an excellent hotel and strongly recommended!

Except for the steep climb up to the hotel, everything else was far above par! The rooms were much larger than expected, very clean, and with a contemporary modern design. The room area was very well furnished with a movable dining table, a couch area, LCD TV and built-in DVD player as well! The toilet was pristine - very well stocked with toiletries and amendities. It even came with a separate shower room and bathtub. The room far beat our expectations for a hotel priced this competitively!

Kata beach was a mere 10 min walk away from the hotel, which is located just at the edge of Kata town. Once you manage to get down from the hill, a whole slew of shops, restaurants and convenience stores are just at your doorstep - Albeit Kata town is not as heppening as Patong, the slightly quieter atmosphere there makes the area all the more relaxed and slow paced.

The hotel staff were friendly, helpful and always willing to assist with any requests promptly. Our stay was thoroughly enjoyable and we would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Phuket but want to be slightly further away from all the hustle and bustle!
