“Family Getaway”
Reviewed 31 March 2014

Our family of 5 + one Grandma went for 3 nights (kids aged 10, 9, and 7) - our first visit to Phuket.

3 THINGS WE LOVED about Boathouse:

1- smack-dab on Kata Beach: simply walk two steps and you're on the Boathouse section of Kata Beach. With lounge chairs and umbrellas reserved for guests only.
2- beach/pool service: set-up of loungers/umbrellas to your liking; beach & poolside food/drink service; ice-cold towels, ice bucket w/bottled water, and fruit kabobs regularly offered
3- breakfast included: lovely cafe w/great view and tasty menu

3 JUST SO-SO THINGS about Boathouse:

1- no hair conditioner: seems like a small thing, but when you're trying to wash all the sun, salt, and sand from your daughter's hair - shampoo alone isn't enough
2- a bit expensive: thankfully breakfast was included, but otherwise the restaurant was a bit pricey as well as the hotel, and although clean, you can see a bit of age - but you get a great location and beach/pool service for your money

Service: although friendly, front desk service left a little to be desired, it was easier to go to the front desk as needed. Poolside/beach service was fantastic.

Value: you are certainly paying for location

Rooms: although very pleasant, this isn't a quintessential Thai experience (hardly anything in Phuket is it seems). We stayed in comfortable (not spacious), joining Superior Seaview rooms (312 & 314) that had glimpses of the sea, but no matter - we were hardly in our rooms. Our rooms were on the opposite side of the hotel, which is preferable since the pool turns into a sort of nightclub/lounge in the evenings.

Cleanliness: clean, but a tiny bit of age is starting to show

Location: 40ish minutes from the airport; town is steps away; right on the beach

It was a great place for the kids.

Kata Beach has lovely sand, and all sorts of water activities (parasailing, ski-doos, thai long boats, stand-up paddle boarding, etc.) available. There are many local restaurants serving all sorts of food from Thai to western at very reasonable prices (and very yummy). Take a stroll along the beach and you'll find beachside massages suitable for the whole family (my 10yo had her first massage).

Room Tip: Our rooms were on the opposite side of the hotel, which is preferable since the pool turns into a so...

We visited this hotel a number of years ago (2008) and can't wait to go back. The location is ideal, with amazing views for breakfast, overlooking the beach and the small island in the bay. The breakfast selection was great, oriental fresh fruit, cooked English breakfast as well as some local traditional breakfast foods.

The only slight problem we had was a humming/droning noise from the room we were allocated on arrival. It usually started around 5am which may point to the fans in the kitchens. Once we pointed this out to reception staff they were more than helpful and relocated us to an alternative room.

The air conditioning can be a bit noisy but we left it on during the day and while we were out for a meal in the evenings so our room was a pleasant temperature overnight.

This was our second visit to Phuket, and the location in this instance was much better than in Patong Beach on our Honeymoon. There was a lovely coffee shop a short distance away (opposite direction to the shops), which was fully air conditioned and homely with English literature and newspapers available to read.

Although it was a while since we have been here, once our children are big enough to be left alone for a couple of weeks, I wouldn't hesitate to book this hotel again for a couples holiday. It would be comfortable for families although, Kata Beach is a quieter resort and wouldn't have much entertainment for younger children.

The hotel has it's own taxi service for transport to and from Patong beach if you want a more lively/busy resort to visit. However, you will pay slightly more than the local tuk tuk for an air conditioned taxi. Would recommend it in the rainy season as the cooler air is very welcome in high humidity.

Without doubt one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in, you definitely get better quality facilities in Thailand for your money compared to other places around the world.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room furthest away from the lifts at Reception end of building to avoid any small possibil...

For my 50 th birthday my husband said I could go anywhere in the world. My choice-amazing and exotic Thailand! After visiting Bangkok and Chiang Mai we wanted a beach location that we could relax at for the last four nights before heading back to the U.S. After extensive research utilizing Frommers and Trip Advisor we settled on the Boat House and it was the perfect decision! We feel you certainly get what you pay for - a lesson learned on a previous vacation. We had the hotel driver pick us up at the airport. They were awaiting our arrival and off we went. It took approx. one hour from Phuket airport to the hotel. The driver had cool towels and cold water and snacks for us.
When we entered the hotel lobby we were warmly greeted. The view was amazing and we were immediately drawn to the breathtaking ocean views. We were early and our room was not yet ready. We simply went to the beach club next door and enjoyed a good pizza. We selected a room that had a shared terrace. We thought it was a great setup. Our room was very nice- no complaints. Bed was comfy and there was no noise at night, we slept great! After enjoying the beach we would usually spend an hour under the covered area on the terrace and read ( there was a huge sectional couch). We never encountered anyone on the terrace - it was always just us!
Now let's discuss the beach! The Boat House has it's own private beach area. You select which chairs you would like and the nice staff would would provide towels and a bucket with bottled water. There were always plenty of chair options ( unlike some hotels where you must reserve your chair at 5am). Also, there were security folks there to ensure hotel guests only were present and they kept and eye on your belongings. If you looked to the right or left of the Boat House private beach, the chairs were right on top of each other - something that we do not like. Here we were spaced out nicely. The beach was very clean. The pool was not big, but nobody was in it! Again, for a change of pace we sat by the pool occasionally and it was just us - a private pool for the two of us. Prior to booking, I read on Trip Advisor that the hotel allows day guests to use the beach and pool for a day rate. We had some concerns. If we are paying top dollar we want the boutique experience and did not want the place to be overrun with non-overnight guests. Well, this turned out to be a non-issue. We did see some folks with wristbands but not many. The hotel is about 20 minutes from Patong which was 500 bahts approx $15 usd each way. We went in one night to check the sights. It was fast paced and something to see. SO glad we did not choose this location as our main beach retreat. There were many places to get foot massages - which we did every night after dinner for 300 baht or $9 usd. Our favorite was Kata Spa. They would pickup and drop off. The aloe massage and facial was great after a day at the beach. There were plenty of things to walk to from the hotel. This was important to us when picking a location. On my birthday I received a nice card and beautiful flower arrangement. Later that day, a yummy cream cake arrived. At breakfast there was a candle in my French toast and singing. They made me feel extra special on this milestone birthday. Again, I researched this for many months and after arriving at the hotel and looking around, there was no question that this was the best place to stay! Thanks again to everyone at the BoatHouse!

Superb location on the beach with an amazing service but your paying for it.The lobster buffet on Sundays is very fresh with lobster from Canada & South Africa. This costs 1,800 baht increasing depending what wine you would like. The beach looks best at 6.30 in the morning before the invasion of tourists like soldier ants.Do get out and about because there are some beautiful deserted ereas.I would strongly recommend this hotel but be prepared for the credit card to take a hell of a bashing especially with the added 10 percent service charge and 7 percent tax.

If you go to Kata Beach, you have to chose Boathouse.
We just return from our stay there and we are already planning to return.
I am working in the tourist industry and I can say the service was excellent.
Every day we got some fruits to our room.
We had free wifi in the room.
They serve you water, cold towels and some fruits on the beach as a hotel gesture - every day!
We felt like super VIPs there.
The staff is amazing.
Boathouse is a small hotel for people who want to have it a bit quieter.
It is directly located on the beach and has an excellent restaurant with a wonderful sea view.
We will return for sure and I can recommend this hotel to everyone who is planning to go Kata Beach.
We miss Boathouse already and I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you again for this wonderful stay.

We paid over $400 for a room here and really did not think it was worth it. The place was nice but not worth $400/nite..they did have a nice breakfast that thank goodness was included. It was right on the beach too. We stayed there because we took a boat out to the Phi Phi Islands and the marina was near by. We came from the other side of Phuket but the ride would have been almost an 1hr. I'm sure there are probably more options in the area.

The boathouse has to be in one of the best positions I have ever seen for a hotel, nothing on Kata beach in my opinion comes anywhere close. Just the small things like the beach chairs are well spaced so you don't feel like your on top of other guests, the water in an ice bucket which the staff bring out to you and refresh when it gets hot or runs out... that's what makes a holiday.

Also my wife is a Coeliac and it is always a concern as even the smallest amount of gluten can have her ill for a day or two. The people at the Boathouse Restaurant and their Re Kata Beach club were so accommodating. We used a card which was translated into Thai from Coeliac Travel to convey our message to the staff and they were only too happy to help. To give you examples the Thai Degustation Meal - usually these are off the table for my wife as one of the many dishes will always have gluten.... the staff picked out the meals that had gluten, re made them from scratch so they still went with the flow of the meal... bravo... we were honestly blown away. In the end we were so impressed we ate there every day and the food is amazing....i am happy to say out of the 12 meals we ate there between Boathouse/ Re Kata not a single incident of Gluten in a meal...... something which even at home is Australia is only a dream.. if your considering a trip and your severely allergic to gluten and don't want to think about getting ill, i can't recommend here enough - thank you so much to the staff for making our holiday.
