Kata Palm Resort & Spa
Ranked #20 of 55 Hotels in Kata Beach
Reviewed 14 November 2013

My Wife and I travelled to Thailand in (end of) October 2013. We were attending a friend's wedding in Thailand. I am a TA contributor and did my research before hand. So i came across Kata Palm and reviews suggested it was a great deal. The wedding party and all other guests stayed at Katathani resort, we opted to be on our own in Kata beach which is close enough.

I will try and keep to the facts:

Location:
The location of the Hotel is nice, it is tucked away from the busy road in Kata and we never had a problem with noise etc.. The walk to the beacj took about 10minutes to get to the Kata Palm Sunloungers. But only 5min to the start of the beach. You have to walk around the wall of Club Med's useless sport facility/mini golf course.

Ckeck-inn:
On arrival, we were greeted politely and received a refreshing cold tee of sorts. Our bag were taken and the lady at the front desk told we would be able to check in an hour (we arrived early morning).

Room
After an Hour walking in Kata and looking at the shops there, we returned and went to our room (203) close to the front of the resort. The room was lovley, aircon was working 100% (believe me its hot in Thailand, so this is a must). Evrything in the room was fine and we could ask for more!! The blinds are nice and thick and on days when we wanted to sleep in we never saw the sun..but this almost caught us out on trip days, so just take note.
The bathroom had only a shower in it, but suited us. The shower was really nice, and nothing broke leaked or was dirty!
The Tv has some English Channels with Series and Movies, if you like soccer there is alot of soccer channels.

Food:
So the breakfast were really nice, a good variety of Thai and Western food. Our accommodation included buffet Breakfast. There were pancakes, waffles, cereal, fruit, bacon, eggs, omelettes etc.. Enough for anyone. It was really good quality and variety!

The Restaurant in the front does Al' carte and on some days they do Buffet with Live Music! We ate here on the Buffet evening, the food was ok, we ate alot and enjoyed it.

*One of the managers (cant remember her name) phoned me earlier and arranged a birthday cake for my wife (free of Charge) this was a really nice touch, i did not even request this, Kata Palm took the initiative!! Thanks for this!!

Staff:
The staff were always friendly and we felt at home here. They always greeted us with a smile and nothing was too much trouble. The towels were changed daily with no exceptions, they were always clean and pressed.

Conclusion:
This is definatley a great choice Hotel in Kata Beach. The value for money compared to other Hotels is excellent. The food is good, rooms are adequate, staff friendly!! If every we return to Thailand/Kata i would stay here again!!!

We are from South Africa, so the conversion rate was about 3.00Baht for 1.00Rand. Nothing compared to what the Europeans were getting. So this is a great Hotel for Saffas.

Taxi's:
Just to give some extra info, Taxi services to and from Kata to Karon, Patong, Katanoi are as follows (please note this is the taxi's outside the Hotel)
Kata - Katanoi 200Baht
Kata - Karon 300Baht
Kata - Patong 400Baht

Tip:
Another Tip when you stay in Kata, when you want to buy snack or colddrinks. Dont buy from anywhere else than 7Eleven (which is on your way to the beach anyway). The other shops close to the beach charge alot extra!!
Shops at the beach charged 75Baht fro a bag of chips, and 25baht for a 330ml coke . 7Eleven charged 30Baht for chips and 17Baht for 500ml coke water was about 7Baht for 500ml.
So its pretty much double at other stores!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are nice, we stayed on the second floor and didn't have any issues!

During our 12 day stay in Thailand, Kata Palm Resort was our favourite! The decor is rich and full of Thai flavour, one of the reasons why we chose to stay here. Our room was large with a lovely pool view. The one-way glass windows ensured you of your privacy. Accommodation was clean, neat and well equip to ensure a comfortable stay. Basic but sufficient amenities.

The staff was extremely friendly, from reception down to the sweet lady attending housekeeping. The language barrier is not a big issue.

The pool and pool bar is definitely a highlight. Some of the ground level rooms have direct access to the pool. We only made use of the Palm Restaurant once, but made me fall in love with green curry. Not too expensive either.

The buffet breakfast is adequate (but not great) with a wide variety of western and Thai dishes. The omelet is worth a try. That being said, neither of the other resorts seem to have a much better breakfast buffet. Fresh bread seems to be hard to come by, where as fresh fruit is plentiful.

The only thing to keep in mind: check in time is only at 14:00. After a 12 hour flight we arrived at the hotel at 11:00, exhausted and sleep deprived. Suffering from jet-lag it was quite unpleasant to hang around till 14:00 when you desperately just wanted a shower and some sleep. On a positive note, our travel agent incorrectly booked a twin room for my wife and I. On request for a double bed, they made an arrangement without any trouble or extra charges.

Free wi-fi available. Just get password from reception. If your room is too far from the lobby, you might not have sufficient wi-fi coverage.

Location:
It is about 20 min drive to Patong. It is perfect if you don't want the hustle from Patong. Though quieter, Kata has more than enough restaurants and bars, shops and convenience stores to choose from.
We were not disturbed by any street noise at night.
It is located less than 10 min walk away from Kata Beach. (Stunning beach!) For the lazy or unfit, Kata Palm Resort also has a free taxi service to the beach and back.
You can get a coupon from the hotel for beach chairs (else you have to pay 200 baht to rent a beach chair). Limited coupons available. First come first serve.

We will definitely be back!

The Kata Palm Resort & Spa is located a short walk away from the beautiful white sandy Kata Beach. For those who don't want to walk there is a free shuttle available to take you to the beach. The hotel also have a beautiful pool that stretches almost the whole length of the hotel which is located amongst beautiful tropical gardens. You can enter the pool directly from the lower level rooms. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and beautifully furnished and all with airconditioners. The hotel serves breakfast that caters for the eastern and the western tastes. There are many restaurants in the area to choose from. The hotel is highly recommended.

Room Tip: You can enter the pool directly from most of the lower level rooms, so watch out if you have kids th...

Had the pleasure of staying at this resort in May 2013. Great room...HUGE...fantastic bathroom. Excellent breakfast selection and helpful, friendly staff. Lovely pool areas as well although a few more poolside lounges wouldn't go astray.

Situated right on the cafe and bar strip and a short walk to the beach if you didn't choose to take the courtesy vehicle in the morning. Great value for money and well worth a look if needing accommodation in Kata Beach.

Room Tip: Make sure to catch "Delvis", the Elvis impersonator at the pub 50m way to the right!

We were delighted with our large room and the wonderful pools with beautiful tropical plants around them onto which our balcony looked. Breakfast had a big selection of Asian and Western dishes but quality was only fair. All staff were very helpful. Location is great - not far from the beach and plenty of restaurants and shopping close by. Hotel is set back from the road which is nice. Unfortunately, the hotel restaurant did not live up to the standard set by the ret of the hotel. All in all, a good place to stay.

Room Tip: There are no lifts so if stairs are a problem request a ground floor or 1st floor room which has a r...

This hotel is fantastic value for money in low season.

CHECK-IN: We arrived at approx 10am and were greeted warmly by the Guest Relations Manager (Pauline). We were first told our request for interconnecting rooms could not be done, but Pauline went away and came back with the good news that yes, we could have interconnecting rooms after all. Rooms were not ready as check in is not until 2pm so we were given pool towels and invited to enjoy the beautiful pool until our rooms were ready.

ROOM: We booked superior pool view and were given rooms on the 2nd floor overlooking one end of the 1st swimming pool. The rooms are starting to show their age but I absolutely loved the room from the moment we walked in - it was traditional thai style with a beautiful big balcony overlooking the gorgeous gardens. This hotel truly is a tropical oasis. I could sit on my bed and look out through the glass sliding doors and the plethora of palms made me feel like I was living in the jungle. Room was clean and bathroom was clean so all good.

BREAKFAST: Average, okay, mediocre, but at the price we paid, we didn't expect 5-star so it's all good. Coffee was excellent. Bacon was terrible. I know it's common practice, but I didn't like that there was certain areas of the buffet which contained the breads and pastries that was left uncovered for the flies to feast. Same for the fruit section.

STAFF: All the staff we came into contact with were nice. Kudos to Pauline (Guest Relations Manager) as she really went out of her way to welcome us.

LOCATION: Excellent. Very short walk to Kata Beach or you can catch the free shuttle. Close to restaurants and shops.

I would definitely stay here again when in Kata as it is a lovely hotel, albeit a little rough around the edges, but definitely value for money in low season.
