Kata Beach has a very European look and feel to it. Rows upon rows of beach chairs and umbrellas are aligned up and down the beach. Each color umbrella represents a new vendor. One guy wanted 500 Baht for the day, whereas further up, the price drops to the usual 100 Baht. So shop around. The clientele too, is decidedly European, mainly Russian, German, and British. There are the usual water sport activities like parasailing and jet ski rentals. I prefer a beach where the only noise will be the occasional longboat chugging ashore.
Sand was clean and the water during high tide was clear and warm. Some rocky bottom during low tide. Food available from plenty of food stall owners or restaurants.
All in all an ok beach, but there are nicer ones in Phuket, so go and find them!
