“Best Beach In Phuket....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2010

Is within a short walk from this hotel. There are plenty of dining/coffee/massage/market/ options nearby as well.

The buffet breakfast is edible also....nice to grab a cup of coffee and a croissant before heading to the beach.

Make sure you talk to Pin at the end of the driveway (At the travel desk) of Sugar Palm for booking any excursion trips. We went to the Kai Islands (surprisingly peaceful and nice) and the Phi Phi circus (quite a production but worth it given the beauty of the islands near there.)

Don't expect Millennium Hilton Bangkok amenities (the rooms are plain but functional.) but overall I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Phuket on a budget.

Tuk-Tuks can bring you to Karon or Patong for 300ish Baht, but Kata is the beach you are going to want to stay at FYI :)

Stayed at the Sugar Palm in Dec 2010 for 5 nights, the hotel is in a great location with the beach just 5 mins walk away. Plenty of things to do and places to eat and drink around the hotel. There is a massage place next door, which does lovely foot massages for around 6 or 7 pound. Booked an elephant trek, monkey show and sightseeing at the big Buddha through the hotel, which cost around £30.00, well worth doing.
Went to Karon and ate at the two chefs restaurant, food and service was gorgeous. Well worth the money!
Went and watched the Thai boxing in Patong, don't bother paying extra for ring side as it's not worth it. It was expensive (£30-40 each) but glad we went.
The hotel is lovely and if I went back to Kata I would stay at Sugar palm again.

This is our 2nd time staying at Sugar Palm. Booked a deluxe room this time round which was a good choice. It's nicer than the superior room we stayed in a couple of yrs ago. We had a little trouble with the room safe but it was resolved promptly by the very friendly staff. Free Wifi. Breakfast wasn't fantastic but adequate. Many mosquitoes in the room and the bed was squeaky. The pool was classy but too small for serious swimming.

The resort is a mere 3-min walk from amenities and beach. We hit the beach only 3 out of the 5 days as it drizzled the entire week, which is surprising as we assumed the monsoon season should be over by Nov/Dec. We visited the massage salon at the entrance of the resort for foot massage or facial every day. There are many restaurants along the main street. If you prefer more shopping, you may want to head towards Patong. Taxi there is between 300-400 Baht.

We took the minibus from the airport to the resort for 180 Baht per person. Took an hr or so to reach Kata. On the return trip, we took a taxi that cost 800 Baht.

Will definitely return!

beware... this hotel will charge you for mini-bar items that you did NOT consume!

upon my checkout on 11Nov (from room 1405, in case management actually reads these things), the front desk lady charged me 80THB for a phonecall (which i DID make) and a bottle of of mineral water (which we did NOT take) from the minibar. we told her this was a mistake, but front desk lady insisted that the maid checked the fridge and we owe them for the water. our taxi was coming any second, so i told her that i didn't have time to argue over 30THB ( = $1), that i'd pay it, but we definitely did NOT take the water.

before this incident, i would've rated this hotel "OK." i would've overlooked:
-- the mysterious (and gross-looking) brown spots on the bathroom wall
-- the bathtub that always looked dirty even though we never used it during our 4-day stay.
-- the stupid design of the bathroom. the bathroom is only separated from the bedroom by a sliding non-opaque sliding door, so you can see and hear everything going on in there
-- the drowned fly that plopped into my bf's glass when he turned on the juice machine at the breakfast buffet

but because of that $1 charge, i'm giving them 1 star. this goes to show you that last impression usually equals LASTING impression.

the staff should be taught the adage "the customer is always right" instead of treating customers like they're trying to welch out of a $1 charge when there's been "mistakes" made by the housekeeping staff.

My husband and I just got back from Phuket Thailand and we stayed at the Sugar Palm in Kata Beach for 5 days four nights. I NEVER have written a review on any hotel before. I am not high maintenance and usually am fine with whatever the hotel turns out to be. But i had such an unpleasant stay here I thought as soon as I get back I'm writing a review. To start the hot tub was freezing. We were told the hot tub is just always like that. Ok no big deal. So no hot tub. Then there was the following...an unbearable stench in the elevators. We were on the fifth floor and HAD to use it. It was slow and the smell burned your nose so bad I smelt it for a while after I got out every time. An army of ants swarmed the bathroom. The shower curtains, robes, and window curtains were all stained with brown marks. The bed was hard as rocks! So uncomfortable the floor may have been a better option. The staff was not the friendliest either. We had stayed in 2 other hotels in Thailand during our stay that were just wonderful. This was horrible!

This is second Sugar Palm hotel in Kata and I stayed in.

My pool access room was very nice. Large, airy, great ventilation, clean, large bath tub, rain shower, good pressure hot shower is always good to have. Pool access was good option too. Wi-Fi internet, and even if you dont have a computer they have Mac Mini in your room for free.

Minibar prices were really low, which is also nice to have. Pretty much the same price as if you buy it at 7/11 next door.

Staff is very friendly and helpful. Some English speaking, most not, but I learned to expect staff in no English speaking countries to actually speak English, unless it is 5 star expensive hotels. Smile to them and you will get that Thai hospitality people talk about.

Pool is large and good depth, you can swim laps if you want. I found water being a little on a cool side. Large Jacuzzi pool is part of the main pool, nice touch. Large 4 head rain showers next to the pool - very nice thing to have to wash off the sand from the beach before going onto the room.

I rented a scooter right through hotel - very easy, and no hassle about "leaving your passport" (never leave your passport with any rental place, if they insist find another one), and having 24 hrs secuty around the entrance and parking area did not leave me worried that the scooter will be stolen over night and I'd have to pay $2000 for it. There are no insurances available at rental places.

SPA. I did not use it, simply because (well, I dont need a hot stone massage and manicure ...hahah) its more expensive than many others. And there is a great massage place right outside the entrance. I went there every day and my lower back doesn't hurt anymore.

The beach is about 200 meters away from you.

Breakfast - get out the hotel, walk to main road, turn right, 50 meters walk and you have 180 baht ($6) buffet with american and thai food breakfast, open at 7 am.

The only complaint is I had a corner room and it was a bit on lack of privacy side, people walk to their rooms right next to you; and the furniture is a bit old, not a big deal at all.

Overall great comfortable stay.

excellent choice if you want to be very close to Kata beach, which is just next doors. The rooms are very good with very good staff who can talk in english. (english is quite a problem in thailand). You have the option of rooms right next to the swimming pool, though we did not go for it. The food is great. There is a restaurant just along the main hotel.
