“Best place we have ever visited; a true romantic hideaway!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2009

We have just returned from the most heavenly romantic break at Lower Barn in St Ewe, Cornwall. We only live 40 minutes away but felt like we were in a different world.

We were met by Janie who is the most friendly person ever; she puts you at ease immediately. Then (best bit!) we were shown our room...The Hideaway - this is pure romance; big bed, HUGE bath, chocolates on the pillow, fresh flowers, a fridge in the room and a selection of DVDs to choose from! The Hideaway was in the middle of the garden on its own which was total seclusion.

One of the main things that attracted us to Lower Barn (now this really IS the best bit!) was the outdoor hot tub although words cannot express how fabulous this was! When we got there I asked Janie what time they shut it down for the night. They don't shut it down at all and we were lying in there at midnight on Valentines- pure bliss!

Waking up to the best full English breakfast was incredible and a nice touch to have all of us sat around together; Lower Barn can only accomodate around 8 people so it was lovely and intimate. The only food we found in the area that bettered our breakfast was the dinner that Janie and Mike served, We only ate one night at the B&B and wish we had ate there for more. We had baked cheese souffle, duck for main and a rich chocolate dessert that was incredible! The whole atmosphere was wonderful with fairy lights and an open fire plus hot water bottles on the seats! We spent Valentines dining with 2 other couples we met there who were really friendly - this actually made our Valentines better! (except for the strange Richard man who spent all his time raving about the hot tub!...only joking Rich if you are reading this!) :)

The very best bit (and I'm going to stop saying this now!) was the amazing facial that Janie gave me using hot and cold stones and products that smelled fantastic! Janie and Mike are so welcoming and within 24 hours you feel like you are a part of the family. And as for their dog Jazz...I tried to sneak her into our car to take her home!!!

As someone working in hotels myself...I can honestly say hand on heart that I have never stayed anywhere this fantastic. If you need to escape and spend some much needed time with your loved one...Lower Barn is the ideal place! So many people we met had been before and were returning because of the ambience and we can most certainly be added to that list!

The food, the decor, the treatments, the location, the magical hot tub but most of all....the hosts.

Unbeatable.

  • Liked — the hospitality of the owners, the hot tub and the small touches eg chocs on arrival
  • Disliked — that our lovely dog couldn't have come with us to meet Jazz!

My wife and I booked Lower Barn after seeing all the positive feedback on Tripadvisor and after staying there, it totally lived up to all high expectations...in fact it exceeded them quite easily. The place is extremely relaxing, the decor stylish but homely and Janie is the perfect host.
We stayed in the Hideaway room which was just sublime. The bathroom had lots of Sanctuary products and fresh flowers which my wife thoroughly enjoyed.
The breakfast was exceptional and Janie treats everyone as if they were her own family...she is chatty, friendly and always happy to help.
In fact one of her tips to go and visit Fowey (pronounced "Foy") resulted in us watching a regatta and the Red Arows...what a wonderful day!!
Janie mentioned that Alistair Sawdey's team had deemed her B&B not good enough to get into his book..what a joke!! This place is a must visit and by far the best B&B we have ever stayed in.....go visit it!!

This was the most fantastic B&B we have stayed in. Ok a little expensive but we were totally spoilt with janies great breakfasts and the option of having dinner which was better than most restaurants I have been too.
Definately recommend the spa treatments too and it is ideally placed for exploring Cornwall.

First Class - Absolutely fantastic - Hubby and I stayed at Lower Barn for my 50 birthday earlier this month. In charge, the lovely Alice (as Janey and Mike on hols) and what a wonderful hostess she was - very friendly with a fantastic sense of humour and a first class cook of breakfasts too (with the help of Tracey) - we tried every one on the menu and they were all devine. We loved the decorated fresh fruit bowl in the mornings!!
The room was exquisite, so many extra features - a lovely range of toiletries in the bathroom , lots of fluffy towels, fridge in the conservatory to chill our wine, milk in a jug (not those awful cartons) and coffee in a jar plus a cafetierre, wide screen TV, choice of DVDs, chocolates on the pillow - just to name a few. The decor is very tasteful and a lot of thought has gone into the design of the rooms, which are all different. Our bed was 6ft but we still managed to snuggle and slept like a log.
My birthday supper was eaten in the "shack" all beautifully laid out by Alice and we finished off with a long soak in the hot tub topped off with champagne under the stars! I will remember it as a very special day and night.
Lower Barn is a little paradise in Cornwall.
We look forward to returning t soon to meet Mike and Janey and of course carry on our chats with Alice. Thank you too Tracey for helping Alice make our breakfasts special. We did share some laughs.
You all made my birthday break VERY VERY SPECIAL.
Hope to see you soon.

A totally unique place to stay. Superb surroundings, rooms, food and hosts. The sort of place you go back to to relax and chill out. A credit to the owners, Mike and Janie.

This was our second trip to Lower Barn and we truly feel that we have found a slice of heaven on earth! The location is ideal for escaping the hustle of London, all you hear are the birds, sheep and the owls! We stayed in the Hideaway this time and the attention to detail is spot on! Janie has got an amazing eye for colour and design and this is reflected throughout the Lower Barn. Dinner in 'The Shack' is a must and the hot tub of an evening with the nights star show as entertainment will not leave you disappointed.
Mike and Janie are the essence of Lower Barn and truly make this a fantastic get away! Fabulous hosts that make you feel so welcome!
We've already booked our third trip for August and no doubt we'll be back again before the end of the year!
