I don’t think I can recommend Sherbourne House too highly. I feel I should maintain silence and not share this hotel, but I’m too good natured.

From the moment we arrived, we were made welcome but not in an overbearing way; we were quickly left alone to enjoy our gorgeous twin bedded room. The beds were soft and comforting, not the awful hard beds so common now. The room and bathroom were immaculate, flat screen TV, tea/coffee making facilities with generous sachets of coffee, teas and the bathroom with white towels, various shampoos/hand creams etc.

The best was yet to be savoured - if this hotel isn’t awarded a Michelin star (or two) then there is no justice. We had invited friends to dinner, and I started with slow roasted pork belly salad which was perfect, succulent pork with crispy but not brittle skin. I then had the steak done to perfection with a delicate array of various vegetables, rounded off with soft chocolate tart with Chantilly cream. One of our guests – a lover of German fare was blown away by his chicken schnitzel and my husband and our female guest were also unanimous in their approval of the sublime cooking.

The breakfast next morning was everything an English breakfast should be yet cooked by the German proprietor who took obvious pride in his cooking. One tiny flaw – his fried bread was really, toast with butter – grilled. But I forgive him.

I really don’t know how this couple Doris and Toby manage to run such an exquisite hotel and restaurant with relatively few staff. This is a treasure, you must visit before it is snapped up by some mass conglomerate – a fast disappearing gem that should be preserved forever to serve the discerning Great British Public.

Room Tip: Choose anywhere, they're all great

Sherbourne House is a delightful small hotel just off the A11 at Attleborough. The hotel is an 18th century building, and the rooms are simply and excellently furnished. The bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in, the bed linen top quality, with real coffee and a cafetiere in the room. Our hosts, Doris and Tobi, made us truly welcome, and the breakfast was delicious. The dining area is elegant, comfortable, and delightful combination of traditional and modern decor; and no music, so you can enjoy the birdsong and peaceful environment. We didn't have dinner, because we arrived late, but would definitely want to eat at Sherbourne House in the future.

This hotel was very clean, comfortable and provided a friendly and efficient service - they even let me have a late breakfast and check out at a leisurely pace, which meant an even comfier stay. A delicious cooked breakfast and a beautiful breakfast room. In short, everything you could ask for. Many thanks!

We stayed in this lovely Georgian country house hotel in February when the weather was bitterly cold, but the welcome very warm. The staff are very friendly, but professional, & looked after us very well indeed. Our room was warm, comfortable & tastefully decorated, catering to all our needs. The restaurant is of a high standard & we enjoyed delicious meals. (To porridge eating Scots: the porridge was authentic, excellently prepared & served!) The hotel is well placed for visiting Norwich as well as rural Norfolk. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here & hope to return. We would be pleased to recommend it to anyone visiting this area.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the front garden of the hotel. Although we could see the road by which the hotel is situated, we were not aware of any traffic noise at all.
