Wonderful weekend stay at Shepley, large house, extensive gardens and woodland with lovely warm pool and hot tub to remove the evening chill !
Surrounded by farm with sounds of the country to greet you with breakfast in the morning. Would return again and again. Thank-you !!!!

For the last few years we have booked a UK holiday home for a week with our extended family. They are really special times where lots of fun memories have been made. We decided against a coastal property this time as we have been quite unlucky with the weather previously so inland in the countryside it was on this occasion with an indoor pool that had a retractable roof should the sun decide to shine! The weather was pretty good on this particular week and the roof was retracted on one or two days!!! The pool was fantastic and lots of fun was had by children and adults alike. The grounds with a lovely wooded area were also extensive and beautiful even though the moles had been tunnelling before our arrival. However, the slide on the wooden climbing frame was too steep and dangerous for any aged child to use. (We had a 10 y/o a 3 1/2 y/o and a 21 month old). We were also aware that there was a trampoline in the garden but when we arrived we found it upside down next to a fence that was swinging in the wind. We sealed the gate with a bag of soil found in the garden and and I emailed Garry to find out about the trampoline. He responded later to say that it had been wind damaged but that if we wanted we could set it up and use it at our own risk. The kids were left really disappointed. It would have been good to have been told before we arrived so that we could have managed their expectations. Within the garden there was the summerhouse. This was more like an empty smelly and dirty shed than a summerhouse. Not a relaxing quiet place that could be enjoyed and definitely wouldn't have a massage in there if we'd booked treatments. We also lit the fire pit one night but found that only 2 pathway lights worked so making it hard to find our way back to the house when the sun came down. The only other outside thing that would be worth mentioning is the clothes line which was green with mould. The hot tub was not working correctly and either was too hot or too cold to be used. We tried it on one night and it smelt bad so have that a miss for the rest of our stay.

Moving into the house, when we first arrived we found it infested with flies. There were hundreds of them just everywhere. They even got into the welcome pack of bread. I found broken glass on the kitchen floor, the sink tap was leaking and water was found all over the side and on the floor. The kitchen had not been cleaned properly with dirt in front, under and behind appliance. The washing machine was filthy, the dishwasher had broken lower shelf. There were rusty pans in the cupboard which were beyond use. The living room was fine and a large space for all to congregate in once we got rid of the flies. The upstairs main bedroom was dirty. Blinds were broken in most rooms, a door handle fell off within a couple of days of arrival. The light fittings in the bathroom were filled with dead flies. The room at the top of spiral staircases had a cupboard door missing and every time someone moved in the room below the bathroom fan went off. The whole house just felt like it needed decorating and proper maintenance including a good deep clean and someone who could clean the glass without using a dirty cloth that just left smear marks. We have paid the same kind of money for places that are the same size but immaculate so more attention to detail is required to every area of the house as far as we are concerned.

Management Response

Hello Jules,

Firstly I would like to thank you for your compliments regarding the pool and grounds at Shepley House, and also for bringing some issues to my attention as we rely on our guest's feedback in order to address any issues and to ensure that any negatives are quickly resolved for our guests.

Please find our response to your points raised in turn below:
With regards to the steep slide, we apologise that you did not feel this was safe for your children to use, however another slide is provided at the property near to the pool, and we are currently looking into solutions to this issue with our maintenance team. Originally Shepley House was a family home and the slide was purposely built for the children living there, however we understand that this might not be suitable for all our guests needs so are currently looking into this.

With regards to the absence of the trampoline, this was damaged by wind not long before your arrival, and as it was unsafe to use we thought best to take it down. We attempted to source and build a new one in the short time before your arrival but were unsuccessful due to living away. We admit we should have communicated this to you prior to your stay, which we apologise greatly that we did not.

There is indeed a summer house in the garden, and we apologise that you did not feel this met your expectations. We have taken your comments on board and will discuss with our maintenance team as to how we can improve this.

With regards to the garden lights, thank you for bringing this to our attention, as we were unaware of this as our check outs and cleaning take place in daylight, and this has not been previously reported by other guests.

The hot tub is checked before every guest arrives and was fully operational and clean before your visit, therefore we will arrange for the hot tub contractors to investigate this on our behalf.

The current issue with flies has recently come to attention and we have fly sprayed the house on countless occasions to attempt to resolve this issue. With the surrounding fields and farmland, this is unfortunately an unpreventable issue with a property located in the countryside, however moving forwards we will continue to attempt to find a long term solution.

The issues you found in the kitchen, and dirty bedroom, are not to be excused and we are currently investing these with our cleaning contractor.

We have taken your maintenance and cleaning comments on board and are currently looking into all of these, with maintenance work and a deep clean already scheduled.

Again, we cannot thank you enough for bringing these matters to our attention and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Kind regards, Garry and The Shepley House Team

Lovely grounds and setting that the grandchildren loved. Even saw a family of deer in the woodland area. Pool used every day and being indoor/outdoor made it even better.
Lovely large living area that accommodated all 9 of us, Had a couple of small issues that Gary
sorted immediately and we were really happy with the outcome. A great rural setting with lots to do within easy driving distance

“A magical, relaxing and comfortable stay”
Reviewed 13 June 2016 for a stay in June 2016

The house and the gardens were perfect. I had my 30th birthday at Shepley house with my close friends. it was fantastic, the house was spacious, the beds were comfortable and the lounge opened onto the garden where you found the pool and the hut tub. the gardens were extensive and the sunset from the bottom of the garden was incredible. The owners were brilliant and were reachable if needed. they left a lovely welcome gift and the house was clean and tidy. I would certainly recommend this house to groups of friends or families with children, its a peaceful beautiful space that is homely and ideal for holidays.

Thank you Gary and Sarah

We had a brilliant time which was enhanced with the weather being so good during our stay. Our grandchildren were in and out of the pool / hot tub for most of the time along with playing in the garden / woods with balls , badminton rackets etc. Everything we needed for a comfortable stay was at the house. We would book again.
