El Tucan Jungle Lodge

Reviewed 2 April 2009

We stayed here for 4 nights in February 2009 on the recommendation of some people whom I met in Costa Rica last year. This is wonderful place to stay. There are only 4 rooms which are immaculately maintained. It was great fun to sit on the long deck and watch the various birds and look at the dense tropical foliage. The owners are very nice and were always willing to help us make dinner reservations, arrange tours, etc. They also serve a very delicious breakfast. The lodge is a little off the beaten path but it was an easy walk to restaurants. We could walk to a beach or rent a bike from the owners to cycle to a more remote beach. We would stay here again and definitely recommend it!

The lodge is located about 4 km out of Puerto Viejo in the middle of the jungle. The German owners have built a little hideaway with 2 Bungalows, with 2 Rooms each. So there are only 4 rooms in total. Every room has a big terrace with hammock. You can watch birds, parrots, agutis and other animals directly in the surrounding.

A great place if you're looking for absolute jungle tranquility, not so great if you don't have a car, as it's located about 1 km away from the main road, and some 3 km from Puerto Viejo.

The german owners were very nice, and the howler monkey who lives there is the most charming lady; she's the lodge's main attraction and she knows it, quite a diva.

Good breakfast included in the price. Rooms are clean and spacious, we did not have bugs or mosquitoes inside, which is surprising given the location.

Highly recommended if you like to sit and relax watching trees, but if you like to go to the beach and enjoy nightlife, it may be a bit too secluded, especially if you don't have a car. We loved it, though, and will definitely go back.
