“Rustic Jungle Stay with the best staff in the area!”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

StI'dped by Yare to eat breakfast by chance and thought we'd ask about the room rates, since we had been staying in a jungle house with literally no useable chairs or even a fan for three weeks. Since business had been so slow at the time, Loni hooked us up with a phenominal rate for a bungalow with a kitchen for the rest of our stay in the area, and it even included breakfast. I will now suggest this place to all who ask. It's in a great location, with super clean rooms considering where you are, and the staff is great. This is my 4th trip to the area, an I'll keep this place in mind for my next. Oh, and the grounds are beautiful and the water in the shower is hot!!

~ The caution is that the professional photos are not of Hotel Yaré. I don't know what that hotel is, but the traveller photos, including mine, are the accurate representation.

I came to Yaré off of the street (didn't see the previous reviews, bad or good) with my bicycle after seeing some rooms in Puerto Viejo for too much money and was offered a great nightly rate for a bungalow with an outdoor kitchen, massive and cold fridge, deck with table and hammock and a big room with decent beds and a clean bathroom with hot water.

Best deal in the Caribbean and Costa Rican owned. Yay!

And it included a nice breakfast of eggs, toast, pinto gallo and coffee. Yay!

I ended up staying three nights. Yaré has nice grounds with raised platforms (I assume for the raining season) and a big beautiful tree that the gardener says is at least 300 years old. It’s right on the “main street” but it’s very quiet and at night it’s tranquil, has 24-hour security and there are none of the barking dog/rooster/screaming family noise issues I have grown so accustomed to.

Lino, the amiable manager, speaks impeccable English and the staff kept my room spotless. Beach access is two minute’s walk away and Cocles is quiet, laid back and safe if you want to avoid the parties and hustle/bustle of Puerto Viejo but still want the amenities. The prices at the Mini-Super a five-minute walk away were not higher than PV. Playa Chiquita is just a kilometre away and the breathtaking Punta Uva a bit farter and easy to get to by bicycle.

This is a three-star hotel, to be sure - but the rate is commensurate with a 1-2 star. I recommend Hotel Yaré, which also has smaller rooms without kitchens and larger bungalows for groups. Thank you Lino, I’ll definitely be staying at Yaré again.

Room Tip: There are a lot of rooms of various types to chose from - take your pick!

We stayed at the hotel for four nights with our two kids (10 and13). We liked the hotel, though we had mostly loukwarm showers (if they worked), and the hotel has only nets instead of windows. We enjoyed the simplicity of the place, listening to the birds and animals at night (it is quite amazing how loud the jungle can be at night) and the owner and his staff took very good care of us. The cabinas are built in original Caribbean style. Choose the rooms upstairs as you are in the treetops and off the ground which can get quite wet during a rainy day. The place could use an uplift, but we definitely enjoyed it's unique atmosphere.

My wife and I planned our " special week away" in Puero Viejo because it was recommended to us by a couple in San Jose, little did we know that the woman that recommeded it was the manager, wow, what a mistake. We have travelled many countries in Latin America and South America and this is by far the worst resort I have ever been in, It was extremely dirty, I mean the floors and linen were filthy. Lots of bugs, no fans, wholes in the screens, smelled moldy. We could only handle two nights there then we walked down the road to a much better hotel, but the staff would not refund our money. If you go there and expect good service, forget it, it was hard to get the staff to do anything for us, not even change the linen, the staff was always sitting around talking or sometimes even sleeping in view of the customers!! The food was ok but the restuarant would close without notice so we had to walk to other hotels for food, very upsetting, to say the least.

Traveling with a large group of young teenagers, we left after one night because of the uncleanliness (blood on towels and sheets in several rooms) and inability to secure the doors and windows. This hotel needs a deep cleaning with new linens and towels.

Please do yourself a favor and do not consider Yare for your vacation. We checked in and it appeared that we were the only ones staying on the property. Our bathroom was very, very unclean and there was no hot water (we were told there would be). Bugs everywhere. Our towels were stained (it appeared to be blood stains) as was our bed. We were extremely upset and I did not even really feel safe there. We stayed the night since it was already dark, but first thing in the morning we packed up and walked down the road until we found a new hotel. The hotel would not give us a refund for the nights we weren't staying for, but we absolutely had to get out of there. Don't trust the photos on their website; they must have been taken years ago.

Very comfortable and clean --enjoyed the hospitality and the beaches close by-bike rental or scooters are a good way to get to where you want- Have a local store next to Hotel if you want to pick up something quick-- Restaurants , you can go to the Hotel or you have a choice of Italian within walking distance.Intown you have a wide variety from local to traditional American food.
If you want to call home buy the calling card for 3000 colognes or 6 bucks you get 19 minutes-- Overall very nice and fun trip -- Small kids should stay at home. Try lobster diving and fishing with one of the locals. just remeber you are paying for the gas and not the fish-but you can buy them after trip. I am going back !!!!

  • Liked — relaxed atmosphere-- outside of town
  • Disliked — puerta viejo not very clean
