“Ideal venue for conferences”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2011

Large conference hotel near Stratford. Good leisure facilities. Rooms comfortable - good to have a bath and shower. Refreshments stations around the hotel are well stocked.
The standard of catering was rather poor.

Room was large and clean but little things not right.
Only one glass instead of two
Shower controls simple but out of reach so you must have a cold shower before hot water comes through
TV not even freeview let alone satellite.

Some visitors very irate waiting for breakfast table due to slow clearing (Sunday morning) and no effective management or organisation.

Overall hotel OK but set up for business not leisure very impersonal.
Location great for exploring Stratford and Warwickshire and excellent pubs in village.

double room ony had one glass in bathroom. no hair dryer provided, only 1 tiny soap, lamp not working, no room service and nowhere to buy a snack(no crisps or nuts in hotel!)
Another case of being understaffed at busy weekend but staff on duty excellent.

Old friends were getting married, & they chose the Ettington Chase in which to do the deed. They got a deal from the hotel on a price for some rooms for their guests, so we booked ourselves in for the night of the 29th July 2011. Then we saw that there was racing on in nearby Stratford-Upon-Shakespeare the day before the nuptials, so we went back to the ECH & booked the night of the 28th as well. We got the deal for a double with bathroom at £75.66 per night B&B, but there seemed to be a little confusion over how it was booked, & it ended up as two separate stays, as this was how they wanted to do it. We paid by card.
On the 28th, we drove the 40 or so miles from home to hotel & booked in, hauled bags & took a look around. Its a fairly large place in its own grounds, situated on the edge of Ettington village. There's a huge car park, & the hotel is on 3 floors. There's a pool, jacuzzi, sauna & gym for guests' use, & an open-plan bar.
This hotel is a conference & seminar venue, used by companies through the week, with wedding parties & so on accommodated at weekends when the corporate types have gone home. Our room wasn't huge, but was adequate, albeit a bit brown. It seemed that everything in there was in shades of it, from fawn/beige to deep chocolate. After settling in, we went off to the races, & found Stratford racecourse an easy 6-mile drive away. Returning early evening, we decided not to eat in the ECH as it looked a bit pricey, & we strolled a few hundred yards into the village, where we passed by the first eatery we saw, & chose the White Horse, where we had steak & salad at a reasonable price.

Back at the ECH, we asked for extra pillows, which arrived promptly. We had a fairly comfortable night's sleep, but were a little surprised to note that the hotel did not have air conditioning. Fortunately, stiflingly hot nights are not a normal feature of UK summers! We got up fairly early, reckoning that the early bird would probably get a better breakfast. It was a buffet breakfast, with a large choice of foods. Frances was pleased to get her Red Bush tea on request. It was all right, but I've had better fried eggs, & my grapefruit juice was a bit watery. At this point there were still quite a few corporate guests about, but they'd gone by lunchtime, & wedding guests were beginning to arrive.
Frances & I made good use of the pool/jacuzzi, then took our time about dressing for the wedding. At some point in the afternoon we were at the bar, & ordered a long tonic with a single gin in it. The lad behind the bar wasn't a ball of fire, so we had to wait a while to be served. When the drinks came, we found we'd got gin & soda, because the mixer 'gun' was firing soda, despite there being a button marked 'tonic'. The lad didn't know until the bar manager turned up & told him.
The ceremony went off well, & celebrations continued into the late evening.
We had to leave fairly early on Saturday morning, as we needed to get home & release Her Majesty the Cat from durance vile. Breakfast was OK as we'd learned what to go for by then. We loaded the car, then went to reception to check out. This took Frances quite a while, as another guest was quibbling about some trifle of other. Eventually, Frances got asked to pay for the extra night, & she pointed out we'd already paid by card, so all we needed to pay for was the bar bill. On check-in they'd taken a deposit against such things, but the bar hadn't charged it through, so we paid for our 2 not-very-large rounds of drinks, which came to £42.50p. That, we thought, was a tad expensive.

The Ettington Chase, owned by a group named Principal Hayley, is pleasant enough, but seems a bit sombre & somewhat tired. We guessed the building dated to the late 1970s or early 80s. It was quite comfortable, but seemed to be missing some sparkle. It was adequate, & the wedding was well managed, so we wouldn't seek to dissuade anyone from going there. We would advise that any guests keep an eye on their billing, though. Payment aside, the hotel reminded us of an officers' mess on a large RAF station a few years ago. Its fairly handy if you want to stay in the country, yet only be a few miles out of Stratford, but you'll need transport.

i can't believe some of the negative comments on here. We stayed for 2 nights, in a beautiful huge room, in the newest part of the hotel. Spotlessly clean everywhere. Food was beautiful. Staff were so friendly and helpful.
The restaurant had plenty of choice, and staff explained exactly what was on offer. Our meals came out quickly, and were beautifully presented.
We had gone for a short relaxing break, and that is exactly what we got. Hotel was really quiet, we were never disturbed by any noise at all.
Our bed was King Size, and so comfortable, it was lovely.
The maid who cleaned our room was from Serbia, and she was so friendly, and lovely to chat to.
The pool, jacuzzi, gym and sauna were beautifully maintained. We spent several hours in theire during our stay, and really felt relaxed afterwards.
We are a mature couple, and are fussy about where we stay. We both thoroughly recommend this hotel.
Brilliant, and thank you to all the staff there.

I don't know what these other people are on about, I booked for my wedding anniversary, just one night, wish I'd stayed for longer, will definitely be coming back. These people who complain their room was not in the main old house should shut up, there are only 7 rooms in the reception area, which are the superior rooms and suites, the normal price for a room is £59 I think, and for just £20 extra you can upgrade to a superior room, I did, and it's well worth it, i had a beautiful room with a view of the countryside, fantastic, a big massive plasma with freebies, and a
fridge for keeping those bottles of wine in we took, and for probably
less than the price of a premier inn
we also got breakfast in with the
price. An all you can eat buffet,
with loads of bacon, sausages eggs
mushroomed fried bread sauté
potatoes and loads of other stuff,
there was fruit and cereal croissants
toast every thing you could want, it was brilliant. We did have a meal at night too, the service was excellent and very attentive, and the food was lovely, I would highly recommend this hotel

The hotel have spent money on the public areas, but bedrooms are getting tired . cannot cope well with a conference - very poor internet connections and sound system limited.
Conference dinner started 30 mins late, and food was very overcooked.
Just not up to scratch, as it should be for a Conference facility
