“A place with character”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2014

We passed by by pure accident. But we didn't regret having stopped.

In the afternoon we had a tasty burger In the shade while an excellent Saxophone player snag and played. An excellent place to chill.

“Helmsman Pub and Restaurant - local and laid back!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2013

For those looking for a relaxed and laid back restaurant (Cape Town style – so shoes optional), need look no further than the Helmsman Pub and Restaurant in the sleepy seaside village of Kommetjie.

Formerly known as the British Bulldog, Helmsman Pub and Restaurant changed hands in May 2011, and is now captained by new owners, Louise and Wil Alkema. Whilst the restaurant didn’t change much, the menu was overhauled and now offers fabulous food at very reasonable prices. Service is professional yet relaxed with friendly waiters – Chanks is great!.
I have eaten here a couple of times, and each time have had a great meal, be it the calamari rings, pork ribs (to die for), a tender succulent steak done to a perfect medium rare, or just a couple of drinks with the bar nibbles.
What makes the food so outstanding is Wil’s passion for great food and it shows – the food is presented with the kind of flair that you would expect in a 5 star restaurant and it tastes as good as it looks.
The beer selection is either on on tap or a range of local brews with frosty glasses! The selection of wines is small, but good. Mains are all under ZAR 100, with the 250g steak being a mere ZAR 87. On Sunday they offer a Sunday roast for ZAR 60 and you can add a marvellous malva pudding for another R15 – need I say more.
There is live music on a Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon which creates a wonderful laid back atmosphere. On special days like Mothers Day, Fathers day, etc, special set menus are offered and booking is essential.
The Helmsman has a lovely outside area under the trees, so cool and shady. There are two tables around the corner, which get the sun almost all day, so ideal for sunlovers. Inside is a small bar area, an open fireplace which is lit in the winter, a comfy couch and a couple of tables and chairs when the weather is chilly or rainy.
After a wonderful meal, nothing beats a walk along the Kommetjie boardwalk to the lighthouse and back….

Thank Suzie M
