We pulled off the road into the Le Mambo parking lot while taking a tour along the leeward coast of Basse Terre. We were immediately greeted and made to feel welcome. Our French is rusty and Creole is non-existent, still, our hostess did her best to take our order and make sure we understood what we ordered. We tried the poulet columbo and the cabri columbo - slightly spicy Caribbean dishes featuring chicken and goat meat served with side, a mild rice and vegetable dish. Interesting and tasty. We lingered on the pleasant open porch and enjoyed a nice glass of Bordeaux - all good. The people were very friendly and the atmosphere was cheerful. Try this place.

Eight of us had a variety of seafood and other appetizers and meals, and all were excellent. Fried snappers and goat curries were among our favourite main dishes, and conch and crab cakes were favourite appetizers. We had to find the recipe for their Sauce Chien when we returned.

We had dinner here mostly because it was 10 minutes from our cottage and we're so glad we did. The menu is a short list of familiar creole dishes, accras and fish pie to start, blaff, colombo, and roast pork mains, but everything is carefully prepared and a delight to eat. The digiestif is an infusion of "cerise pays" in a juice jar, a serious invitation to excess. The service is friendly, fairly prompt (we had dinner in under 2 1/2 hours) and unfazed by our halting American accented French. A family at the next table had three children, no problem.

The bill for dinner for three including three powerful little punches and a bottle of wine (which it turned out was more than we needed) was 85€, good value for an excellent meal.
