“Bad example of British tourist industry”
Reviewed 27 September 2013

After a great day in Wick, we finished our visit to the heritage centre and asked the staff for their recommendations on where we could go for hot food there and then. The heritage centre staff recommended the Nethercliffe Hotel. When we arrived at 5.30pm, there was nobody at reception and I had to trail through to a noisy bar to find anybody. We were then told they didn't serve any hot food until 6pm - no good to us so we walked away. Typical poor British tourist services - you wouldn't get treated that way on the continent.

When you enter Wick you feel like you have entered a ghost town, the streets were empty and everything looks very grey...we were a little bit worried about the hotel. However, the hotel we stayed at was nice, the owner welcomed us and was very friendly, gave us all the information we needed. The room was spacious and so was the bathroom. Excellent service for breakfast in the morning with good options. Free wi-fi and free parking were a bonus.

This hotel is an old building so not so good as the modern up today Premier Inns but it do,s have character. but the stairs could be a challenger for some, the first night was not to bad but the second night was a bad one, the bar below our room was very loud and they went on for a long time but when they finished I am afraid the locals returning home were in good voice and they let every one know, so not a lot of sleep that night, not good when you have a 7 hour drive the next day, sorry will not be going back to this one

Room Tip: don't think there could be a good room on a bad night

The staff here were friendly and there's a half decent bar downstairs, but the place is a bit tired and looks like the sort of place you,d expect to find a 1970s travelling salesman.

It's centrally located so you can get to bars and restaurants easily, and there's plenty of parking

We recently stayed in this Hotel after coming off the Ferry from the Orkney Islands. It was about 20 minutes from the ferry terminal. Parking is across the street in a small carpark for free. The room was adequate for an overnight stay clean and comfortable. Breakfast was different to other B & B with no buffet of juice, cereal etc you had to order everything that you wished to have with no offers of refills for juice or coffee, after sitting for 10 - 15 minutes in the room without seeing anyone. The dinner menu was extremely limited with basically a couple of curries to choose from. and another couple had just left as we arrived and we did not see any other patrons.

We travelled by train to Wick to see the incredible flow country at its best. Lovely welcome as we checked in and discovered that we could - had we realised - have walked up directly from the station to the rear of the hotel. The front entrance is a typical bar entrance, which perhaps does not give a true impression of the hotel behind. Our room was clean and comfortable - excellent value for this price range. Noticed that some reviews were not very complementary about the hotel but we loved the character of it and the welcoming atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble. Throughout our stay we received excellent care from everyone. Lovely garden at the rear and a residents' lounge as well as the bar. Better facilities than many more expensive hotels.

At breakfast, Ruth was a mine of information about local wildlife and history, helping us to make the most of our three night stay. The seabirds were nesting - a walk along to Wick old castle, passing the swimming pool at Trinkie was delightful. The following day we went out to Noss and Duncansby Heads, calling in at the Broch centre. We will come back by car next time as there is so much to see around Wick and this visit has just given us a taste for more. We shall certainly stay at Nethercliffe again next time.

At first we could not find this place, because we were looking for a hotel that looks like the photo. In fact that is the view from the garden, and the street entrance is rather drab.

We cannot fault the owner and staff, who were very helpful and showed us up and down the stairs to our room, which was clean and comfortable. The guests' lounge was on the first floor and was very small, and uninviting. We weren't shown any other facilities and it seems that this is all the residents have to use in the evening apart from the public bar.

The dinner menu was also uninspiring, so we wandered around the town looking for somewhere good to eat. The best we could find was the Wetherspoon pub, which was pleasant enough but we were hoping we could find a decent restaurant. The town itself is rather downbeat - it could be so much more interesting for visitors, but had no charm at all.
