“Friendly Service”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Mokoya Lodge is a simple country retreat with happy and friendly staff. The food at Sweet Thyme is good country food, the Lamb shank in red wine sauce was perfect. The stone chalets are comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and the cappuccinos were fantastic. Thank you to Mollin and DJ for a lovely weekend break. Good value for a three star lodge. Just 8,5km from Bill Harrops balloons launch site.

I booked accommodation at the lodge in January, for a wedding we were attending in March.

I confirmed the booking on at least 3 occasions.

When we got to the lodge, there was no-one. We walked around for about 15 minutes, and eventually found a bar man. I advised him we had a booking, and he asked me to follow him to the office. On reaching the office, I was advised that we had no booking. (Our booking was paid for in full weeks ahead of the time).

Fortunately I had brought with me printouts of all the e-mail correspondence, which I showed him, and I asked him to speak to the person who made the booking, only to be told she does not work over weekends.

He disappeared for another 15 minutes, and then appeared with keys for our rooms, and said everything was sorted.

As soon as we put our luggage in our room, we were approached by another couple who told us the room was theirs. A housekeeper instructed us to leave the room, as the other couple booked it first. When I asked her when they booked, she replied two weeks ago. I replied that we had booked in January already, upon which she replied "o" and left all of us standing there.

The bar man eventually returned, told the other couple that he will take them to another room, and that we could stay.

This was a very bad start to the weekend.

The lodge clearly is not being managed properly.

It is also not a luxury lodge, walls between rooms are paper thin, and you can hear everything being said in the next room.

Two couples who attended the same wedding paid for two knights, but decided to leave after the fists night, as they could not face staying another night.

I must warn foreign visitors to the country. You are often tricked by great photgraphs, and end up with no service.

A Japanese couple who were at the lodge with us, were trying to have lunch at the restaurant, and were rudely advised that it was closed. When they advised that they had enquired if the restaurant would be open, and were told it was, they asked where they should go for lunch, the staff member just pulled up his shoulders. Not good for foreigners who do not know the country, and what the alternatives are.

I contacted the lodge on the Monday to advise them that there was no misunderstanding with the booking. They did apologise and offer us a free weekend, but after the way we were treated, we will not be taking this up.

Thank you for your review - AvWRsa.
We would like to address your comment about your concerns.

The booking details were unfortunately lost in a computer crash.
The room was made available and an explanation was given as to why there was a booking error and apologies made for the confusion.

The unit you were allocated was in a standalone stone rondavel and the comments are misleading regarding construction, the lodge is not a luxury lodge and is 3 star rated and priced accordingly.

The pictures on the web site represent the lodge correctly and are not misleading; there are different room types which are adjacent to one another where noise can travel.

No other complaints or refunds were requested over the weekend, and excellent guest comments were made in the comments book.

The kitchen closes at @ 2.30.pm on Saturday and unfortunately the walk in restaurant customer could not be helped.

Apologies were made and as well as an offer of compensation. The offer was declined therefore not allowing Mokoya Lodge the opportunity to make good of any inconvenience caused.

On arrival we were greeted by friendly and welcoming Mokoya Lodge staff. Even though the gravel roads were a bit bumpy after the rain the previous week it was a quick and easy drive from Johannesburg.
Shortly thereafter we were checked in and relaxing next to the pool. Besides for the location situated next the river, nice walkways and a pool which was very welcoming in the hot Magalies weather, the food was outstanding.
If you are looking for a weekend away to recharge from the rat race, this is the perfect venue. Good food, good coffee, stunning location and exceptional service. I will definitely visit them again.

Great place for a night or 2 close to Johannesburg in the cradle of humankind. Great stay before doing a Balloon Safari with Bill Harrop. Resturant good but limited selection and wine list. Comfortable and quiet surroundings. Nice pool and great conference and teambuilding/function venue.

Thank you Mokoya Lodge for a memorable, relaxing weekend.
The hotel is so close to Johannesburg but you feel like you really have "gotten away" from it all. The surroundings are just beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed the walk/hike we did at a nearby venue. The food at the Sweet Thyme Restaurant is fantastic and the staff are so friendly and helpful.
On the Saturday we did a "Sushi making" course which was great fun and expertly given.

My 3 days away felt like a week and I highly recommend them for a relaxing getaway.

We stayed at Mokoya Lodge as a group of friends not too long ago. Looking to just get away over a long weekend to somewhere not too far from home.
Arriving there we were greeted by very friendly staff and no hassles booking in and getting help with our luggage and shown to our units, with parking close by. The rooms were neat and clean, very well kept. And everything in working order. We loved it!
The surroundings are just breathtaking and plenty of walking trails to enjoy. Staff and management were very helpful as it just happened to be a big rugby weekend and we wanted to watch the match. The manager had no problem setting it all up for us in their gorgeous Thatch and Bar area. We had great fun!
And the food at Sweet Thyme Restaurant …… WOW, some of the best I have ever tasted, definitely of international standard, so make sure to book when you go for a visit! You will NOT be sorry.
Overall just a fabulously fantastic experience and just what the doctor ordered!!
