Grand Sunset Hotel

Reviewed 15 July 2013

We booked a Grand Deluxe Room and stayed at this hotel from 12 Jul till 14 Jul 2013. We enjoyed our stay there and highly recommend this hotel. Things that we like about:
1) This hotel located within short walking distance from the beach and there are many shops/restaurants nearby.
2) The room is spacious and clean. It comes with a living room. We especially fond of the balcony where we have our breakfast there with a refreshing experience.
3) The rooftop pool has a good view to the beach .It is a romantic experience to see the sunset for us. Plus, the pool is clean and lit up with small different LEDs at the floor of the pool.
4) They have breakfast delivery service to the room with no extra charge! A surprise to us given the $$ we pay. Plus, you can choose either English breakfast or Asia menu and the food quality is good!!
5) Video players and movies can be rented without charges
6) The staffs are very friendly and helpful. I must specially mention and thank Miss Starfish for her assistance to make our stay memorable. Examples:
a. She offered to contact our driver and negotiate a better price for us before we asked. While we were waiting for some time for our transport, she automatically came to ask for the driver’s name card to check for us.
b. We had few problems with our room. She was patient and assisted to solve the problems in a best effort.

The only imperfection was that the pump was spoilt for one day during our stay. As such, we had no water. Thankfully, the staffs were trying to help and made the problem manageable without too much hassle for us.

We stayed at the Grand Sunset from 17 - 22'nd of June 2013. I believe when one rates an hotel you should bear in mind the * rating of the hotel and then adjust your expectations to that. You would not expect a fantastic burger from Mc Donald’s and with that in mind the Grand Sunset was a great hotel and I would recommend it.
It is located right next to the Old Phuket hotel across from the beach. I would recommend getting a room on the side that does not face the Old Phuket as the view from your room is that of a wall. On the other side you have an open field and sideways ocean view.
The Hotel does have a modern flair but the all-white seems a little stark. We did have a water problem in our room (these things happen) and eventually was moved to another room. I can say that the staff is very friendly but that is something that I have experienced throughout Thailand.
The only thing I really did not like was the mildew in the showers but other than that a great experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with ocean view not on the Old Phuket side

Stayed here for 3 nights after staying at a nearby "serviced apartment" and although it was pretty nice, it was a little underwhelming. We had just come from a place that had completely exceeded our expectations, so that may have had a bit to do with it, but overall we were a little disappointed at this hotel because it didn't seem to fulfill it's potential. The room was spacious and clean (stayed in Grand Deluxe), but it was very empty. The "living room" just had a small desk/bench where the kettle and coffee and tea were, a small couch and a coffee table and fridge, and nothing else except for a huge blank space. It they were to put a small table or something in the huge empty corner, that would make a gigantic difference because as it is, it feels like only half of the room is being used and the rest is just dead space. Plus the walls are bare and having some paintings or something would go a long way. The balcony was fantastic and we had the back corner room on the 5th floor and it looked out over the adjacent empty greenspace and we had a great view of the mountains and could see the ocean easily from our balcony and bedroom window. The balcony also had a couple chairs and a small table, which were a nice touch.

The staff were friendly and congratulated us on our honeymoon and ensured that we had a very nice room because it was our honeymoon, but other than that, we didn't feel much of a personal touch and didn't feel like they were ready to go out of their way to help us or make sure we were taken care of. Again that may have been tainted by the fact that our previous hotel owner/manager went way over and above any expectation we could have had, which is more possible for him because he has a smaller number of rooms and guests than they do.

Overall, the rooms were clean and fairly nice, it just felt like they weren't putting in the full effort that they could and we're reaching their potential, which could be done with some simple upgrades (make the rooms feel like a home instead of a room with a couch and a coffee table).

The rooftop pool was fantastic though, especially at nights with the colour changing lights, and the view is great, even though you have to look over the 4 hotels in front of you to get to the ocean.

Room Tip: Grand deluxe room is nice, especially if you're an even numbered room with the "garden"...

We stayed at the Grand Sunset from 5-8 December. The reviews are correct in saying that it is simple but different. It is ultra-modern, however a little stark feeling. The roof top pool and bar is wonderful when you want to get away from the beach. The beach is across the road and about a 2 minute walk. Next to the hotel is a couple of massage places, and restaurants as well as the plaza. The rooms are clean. At first we were given room 206 and we had to request to change rooms. At first one of the staff members told us that it was a noise from a local business and that an engineer would look at it. He later told us that the engineer had looked at it and a part was missing, but it had been fixed. The noise continued and later another staff member confirmed what we had thought, it was from the hotel and from their water system. This inconsistency (deception) was disappointing. There is a water pump that operates near this room and appears to service the entire hotels water usage. Anytime anybody uses any water (flushes the toilet, uses the shower) this pump would then start to work and make an awful noise. Do not stay near this room and perhaps the 2nd floor. We were not able to sleep and could not be moved until the second night when they offered to move us to the 5th floor. The new room we were moved to was much bigger and nicer, and we could no longer hear the water pump. All in all, we were quite happy with our stay. The hotel is relatively new and appears to be working through some issues. Location is great. Rooms are clean, and staff are pleasant. Free wifi is also a bonus. We liked Karon Sea Sands a little more due to the holiday feel of it but this is a personal choice and many will be very happy at Grand Sunset (just not in room 206).

Room Tip: Steer clear of room 206 (or any room next to the elevator). Don't let the staff convince you oth...

This is the third time I stayed with Grand Sunset.
After my last stay, I was told by the hotel to book with them directly for a better rate if I plan to stay with them again.
True enough, they gave me a better rate, with breakfast included, than any of the hotel websites.
Upon checking in, they surprised me with a free upgrade to a grand deluxe room.
They really treasure your repeat business.

For those who are looking for a hotel in Karon, save your time looking around.
It's not a big hotel, simple but unique.
You don't find big tour groups here. Usually, couples, family and solo travellers.
Plus points for this hotel ,
- it's not a big hotel, so it's not crowded and noisy,
- free internet in the lobby with 4 terminals,
- free coffee, tea and biscuits in the lobby,
- free fruit at the reception counter,
- very nice pool, I always have a sunbed available,
- last, but not least, staff are friendly with greetings when you go in or out of the hotel.

However, if you are planning to stay in your room watching TV the whole day, you'll be disappointed. They only have 10 channels, sorry no English Premier League or sports channels.

Enjoy your stay,
Gary Tee

We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights.
Pros – hotel is fairly modern. Very nice breakfast, something different every day. Roof top pool was great, water so cold, which was welcomed in the heat. Very comfy loungers. There is a limited number, but we had no trouble getting 2 every day. Air con in room was great. Distance to the beach – just across the street. Free internet access as they have laptops at the reception. There were a few very nice restaurants just around the corner as you leave hotel complex, and then it’s markets, more restaurants for about a 15 minute walk before you arrive at the main stretch for bars and eating holes galore.

Cons- rooms are quite small. Shower leaked all over and as the bathroom was so small it was hard to navigate around it. Shower head goes everywhere, found it very irritating when you just want to wash. The whole bathroom floor was soaked after each shower so we needed to use the towels to dry the floor.

Karon beach – we didn’t find it that great. Beach was quite big, but fairly dirty. This area is very busy, although having seen the craziness of Patong, you could say it was moderately busy. Quite a spot for Russian tourists however, who seem to struggle to smile or be courteous in any way. We stayed at Cape Panwa before going to Karon beach which was so much nicer, so Karon had a lot to live up to. On the whole, Karon is certainly worth a visit but maybe for a day or two, but I don’t think we would return to this area in particular.

We arranged our own transport to the airport and we paid 800 baht, we used taxi meter which you can order though their website. If you book it through reception you will pay 1000 baht. Also you get 10% discount if you have a massage at the place just to your left when you leave the hotel – i only found out about it on my second massage.
