“Marina Diver's in Kata Beach is Excellent!”
Review of Marina Divers

Marina Divers
Reviewed 30 August 2012

I just read that last review, and found it to be completely off the Mark! Marina Diver's is one of the best shops in Phuket. It is the best DEAL too. First, they do have their own boat, and a full crew. The Dive Masters are great, and it's an easy crew to get along with. (I've been on other boats where attitudes and in-fighting was very evident. It's never the Thais fighting.) As long as you are safe, and respectful to other people, Marina Diver's won't care what you do. The crew, Eek, Richard, etc. are very helpful. If you're a new diver or an experienced diver, does not matter. They will take care of you. They taught me how to use my new camera underwater, (Canon S95). Tell the Dive Master what you want to see, and they will find the fish you are looking for. The food is great as well. The best part is the price. If you book 3 days of diving, they give you 30% off. Now that might not sound like much, but it ends up costing about $70.00 a day (3-tank dives) If you don't have your own equipment, they wil give you 30% of the rental gear too. I dive a lot when I go to Phuket, so it makes a big difference to me. Plus, they feed you two (2) meals on the boat, so I don't have to pay for meals! I have not used their rental gear in several years, but rental gear is never great. You really should have your own mask-fins wet suite, and consider buying your own regs and travel BCD. All of the dive shops have Dive Masters with underwater cameras, and they all shoot pictures and video of you. AND, they always try to sell you a DVD of your trip. Usually asking 1000 to 2000 bhat ($30-60). That's just business, and how the underpaid divemasters make a few extra bucks. Enough said. Give Marina Diver's a try.

We booked a day long diving trip with them in November 2011. First of all, they do not have a boat, so the trip was conducted by another operator -- South Siam divers. That's OK.

We also rented the equipment from Marina Divers: BCD, wetsuit, fins, and mask. That's where the things went wrong. The equipment is prepared and delivered to the boat without your involvement. When we arrived at the boat, my equipment bag was missing the wetsuit, the mask was broken, there was no regulator, and BCD had holes in the inflator hose -- not only things were missing from the package, the parts that were present were faulty, which during a diving trip can be deadly! My girlfriend's wetsuit had patches of the cover broken and hanging down in several places. Her BCD showed significant signs of wear as well. My diving day would have been ruined if not for the South Siam diving instructor (thank you, Neil!) who managed to find the replacement parts on the boat.

After the dive, we went back to the Marina Divers to complain and demand a refund for the equipment they failed to deliver. The lady at the shop was very rude. She refused to see any fault of theirs in the condition and the delivery of the equipment and she denied us the refund.

Our advice: go to another shop for your diving adventure in Phuket. There are plenty of them around. Consider picking one that has its own boat. Don't repeat our mistake: ask to see the equipment the shop would rent to you. Make sure you get things without significant wear and tear: every diver on our boat had better looking rental things than we did; the replacement parts that our diver instructor found were better quality than Marina Divers provided to my girlfriend.
