We had a 9 night stay at the Centara Villas and absolutely loved it. We stayed in a pool villa, no 403 which was the furthest away, right by the buggy turning area and it gave us complete privacy, we never closed our bedroom blinds because we looked out on only the jungle vegetation with loads of birds and butterflies - gorgeous. The view out over the bay whilst dipping in and out of the pool was stunning. A couple of minor gripes about the room: not enough storage space for clothes and a few more power sockets would have been good, but the room itself was lovely, it looked as though it had recently been refurbished. Also, the pool area was a little stark, a couple of plants would make the world of difference - however again it was very well maintained - and did I mention the view??
We did attempt the steps up to breakfast once and again when going for our cocktails and canapes in the evening (the choice is either in your room or you can have at the bar if you prefer) - but arriving gasping for breath and dripping put us off and we used the buggy service for the rest of our stay! Walking down the steps was no issue though. The young man who collected us for breakfast in the buggy each morning was a delight, so happy and friendly - I didn't get his name unfortunately but two thumbs up to him. Breakfast was fine - nothing exceptional but plenty of choices.
We didn't use the main pools at all but on passing when on our way to lunch at Bay View restaurant there were always sunbeds available and it seemed peaceful with plenty of waiters for drinks etc.
The food at Bay View was very nice with a selection of thai dishes, paninis, burgers, salads etc - we ate there most days and the staff were lovely.
We did two trips with Simba while there, to Phi Phi and Phang Nga and loved both - Jenny was with us on both trips and she is a great host and guide. Expensive but highly recommended!
We went into Karon every evening apart from one night when we treated ourselves to dinner at Mom Tri's Kitchen in Kata Noi (mega expensive but very nice). We found plenty of little family owned restaurants where the food was very good and so, so cheap. One place I would recommend is called Yings, it's about 5 mins walk along the main street up from the circle on the left hand side. Most main dishes were 85 baht and rice about 30 baht and the food was great - can't go wrong with that! We also ate at the Red Onion which lots of people recommend, we ate there a bit later, about 10pm and got a table immediately - but earlier in the evening they were queueing to get in. We also found a lovely italian (think it was called Del Maria) - if you turn left off the main street, past all the stalls and restaurants its sat right at the end and they do great pizzas and very reasonable carafes of wine.
We paid 200 baht each way - no variation at all and always stated up front. In Karon there appeared to be a tuk tuk "guvnor" we used to see him when we wanted to go back and he would shout at one of the drivers to take us, I think he operated a rotation system
After we left the Villas we stayed in a high end 5 star villa for a few days, and whilst lovely I actually preferred the Centara - the staff were great and you simply cannot beat the location and views!
