“second stay, still beautiful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 January 2012

Love the Secret Cliff for the beautiful views to Karon and beyond, the stunning gardens, comfortable rooms and the interesting breakfasts.
As the name suggests Secret Cliff is perched on a cliff between Karon and Patong and not within walking distance to either, so your own transport is essential unless you want to take the complimentary shuttle that the resort offers (we always hire a scooter so we can go where we want when we want)
We usually travel to Thailand during the 'green' season so we get great deals on accommodation prices, but even during high season I think Secret Cliff offers real value for money.
As for the rooms, we always ask for a room with a bath as I love nothing more than a soak in the tub, and they are always of good quality with lovely balconies, huge beds, 2 free bottles of water daily, dressing gowns, slippers and umbrella if it gets a bit wet, bathroom amenities are of ok quality ( I never like resort/hotel shampoo no matter where I go, so I always take or buy my own preferred brand)
The pool area is small but beautiful with views forever, and the temperature of the water is perfect.
The dining/breakfast area has views to die for and is just a lovely way to start the day, as are the eggs cooked to your liking by the chef. All the food in the onsite restaurant is tasty, delicious and reasonably priced. The room service is efficient.
As stated in previous reviews the internet is painfully slow and only available at the front desk, so no in room WiFi, but this is of no bother to us as we are there to relax and we are usually having to much fun to worry about emails or internet.
Laundry service at Secret Cliff is very expensive so we usually take our laundry load to Karon and get it washed and dried there for a really reasonable price and quick service.
Overall Secret Cliff remains a reasonably priced place to stay with possibly the best views over Karon, we will return for a third time hopefully soon :) although never soon enough...

While this hotel was beautiful there were many little things that decreased our enjoyment of the experience.

The view overlooking Karon beach is amazing, and we had a fantastic view from our room. The rooms are quite large and very comfortable..

We also had problems with the wifi and were given many different excuses as to what may have caused it, throughout all of it there was never any apologies from the staff members. Overall the service was very lacking, whenever there were any problems the staff would get very defensive and not acknowledge that an error had been made.

The ad states there are free shuttles to the beaches, but these leave only once a day and if you miss them you are stuck getting a tuk tuk or taxi which gets quite expensive.

We were also stuck with the nye gala dinner which was not worth the price that we paid. The food wasn't anything special and the entertainment felt very amateur.

I think this hotel has a lot going for it, however the experience is somewhat ruined by the service.

really a big delusion. Apart from the total arrogance of the owner they forgot 3 times to clean the room, they had promised to change the apartment but sold the room to somebody else..the only nice thing is the restuarants with sea view. Rooms are terrible..hot dirty 1 star furniture..not clean full of spiders mosquitos etc etc.. Never found such a bad hotel in my life.

My bf and I stayed for 7 days from xmas day to new year's day 2012 and we were really expecting a great holidays becoz first, we have paid quite abit for the hotel(thinking that it is worth the view and given that it is 4 star), but the last straw was when we were checking out they asked me to return their LAUNDRY BAG or they will charge me 300 baht for it!! My furst thought was... my god even a 3 Star hotel gives this to me for FREE!!! gosh..

Ok.. so for a list of the small frustrations we had tolerated before blowing up on day 7.
1) had to pay 9700 baht (SGD350)for a stupid gala NYE dinner for 2 person with very crappy lucky draw prizes (fire crackers) and food that was more worth for a SGD50 dinner. More so in Thailand! And to justify this, we heard other pple complaining this, and bascially when we were checkng out and the couple next to us told us they were invited to the dinner for FREE!!!!!! *screams*

2) Wifi was only working for the 1st day, and we had asked very nicely everyday if there was smt they could do abt it and they kept saying they had their engineeer to check, other rooms were connecting fine.. blahblah.. if we wanted we cld go tot the lobby to connect. Like i paid more than SGD200 a night for this? to go to their cafe, buy a 5 dollar cappucino just to connect? and remember... we didnt complain for this at all. Later we found out from 2 other rooms they could only conect for the 1st day too.. quite a coincidence eh?

3) We had our breakfast buffet (boring food but still no complaints for this) my bf wanted to take a coffee back to our room to enjoy the view from our balcony, een telling the manager he will bring back the cup (he was really too polite for this) and the manager was very impolite and hostile to say NO directly, its a policy. Later a staff told us they dun have enough cups. -_-'

4) on the first day, there was a chewing gum(chewed by smeone already on our phone). Again we simply threw it away.

I think overall we were more unhappy with the attitude of the staff, especially the senior staff who seem to se it as being hostile n tough as the best customer service. the view from the room is great but really, there were many other hotels arnd n im quite sure Secret cliff is not the best around. Location is not convenient for walking to Karon beach or Patong at all unless u rent a bike. We had rented a bike from them (which was the thing that made our trip wonderful to be able to explore the place) but it was 1/4 filled with fuel and we had returned it full and they didnt even make any concessions or refund for this kind of small things we do..

Do not spoil your holidays by staying at Secret cliff!!

Room Tip: dun trust the pictures!

Let me put it simple:

a) I have only visited Phuket once (Dec 2011), and stayed at Secret Cliff Resort. I loved the hotel and the city

b) Nice staff, amazing rooms. Ocean view rooms have an OK view. You see 50% trees and 50% ocean.

C) Food is great at hotel plus the restaurant next to it, called Coco Pizza, have amazing Pizza and wonderful middle-ages lady manager.

d) Hotel is close to Karon beach, Kata beach and Paton beach but not by foot. You should rent a bike (200bhat a day) or a car (1000 bhat a day approx). Better reserve a bike with hotel (they have only 3/4) by calling them upfront

e) Have an amazing stay at this hotel with someone you care

Our deluxe ocean view room was nice and big enough for twin share and the pool was small but pleasant, and it has the best ocean view. However the hotel is located on very steep ground, and some people may have trouble with access.

Only 1 shuttle a day is offered into either Patong or Karon. If you miss it, or want to come back early tuktuks (red vans) will charge you 200THB one way into Karon (2km) or 300THB into Patong (4km). We discovered that off you walk about 200m south towards Karon Beach, you can shortcut down through another resort via steep stairs to Karon Beach. There are some friendly beach bar/restaurants here where you can get cheap meals and drinks, right on the beach, or you can continue a flat walk to Karon town. But it maybe too much of a walk for some.

What really let this place down was the staff. you may as well be invisible. No greetings, no smiles. As the phone in our room was disconnected, I asked if reception would help me book two tours. The staff just dialled the number and handed the phone to me. Only afterwards did she advise that I was charged 10THB/min for those calls and they only booked tours for free with companies that had an agreement with the hotel. The bar near the pool was usually closed and when I did happen to see a staff member there, he was asleep behind the bar. Hotel staff did not assist in hailing tuktuks, you had to brave the busy road yourself.

The onsite restaurant is nice enough, but pricey for Thailand. At least the staff here were friendly though, a real contrast to the hotel staff.

Wifi is available but expensive, and the airport transfer (800THB each way for up to 3 people) is very pricey. we paid 600 THB for a taxi.

All in all this hotel was nice in appearance, but the distance from the beach and lack of hospitality made it a disappointing place to stay.

Room Tip: Some rooms are located on the other side of road near a open air Thai boxing gym - these have the be...

We stayed for 5 nights, and had a good time. We stayed in an ocean view delux room, and it was very large, nice bathroom, nice balcony facing to the sea. It's far from the busy areas like karon and patong, so you hear nothing but the ocean sound. They have a free bus everyday to take you to patong or karon. But as they pick you up around 4 or 5, you have to come back by taxi if you want to stay out late. The hotel restaurant is nice, but it's isolated and you can't go to convenience store or anything without a motorbike or taxi.

We found some lizards in our bathroom but we didn't mind. The staff were friendly and nice.

One drawback is that most of the rooms are located down the hill, so you have to walk up very steep hill to get to the reception or hotel. I found it too much, while my husband didn't mind. You got to be fit to stay at this hotel for sure.
