My wife had heard from a friend that the Blue Elephant Cooking School was not to be missed. Even though we're on a tight budget and this was definitely out of it, we decided to attend anyway. We arrived at 8:30am and our host and his assistant took us to the morning 'wet' market, taking the time to show us the ingredients they use. It was very helpful that his English is that of a born-American (even loquacious) but he is also fluent in Thai, Chinese and French. We've been to lots of local markets and love the assault on our senses - our host took the time to explain how to choose the vegetables, herbs and spices and what health benefits each offered.

Once back at the beautifully-restored former Governor's mansion which serves as their restaurant and cooking school, we were offered chilled fruit drinks while we waited for them to complete their set up. The break was short and we were ushered into a light and well-air conditioned room that had school-type desks and a long kitchen counter/island that wrapped around one of the corners of the room. At each of our places was a folder that had the recipes we were going to cook that day plus a very attractive embroidered chef's apron, that was ours to keep.

We got started right away. At the counter/island were portable single-burner stoves and trays with all the ingredients in neat glass bowls. There was a cutting board, knife and skillet so each 'student' got to do everything themselves. The 'teacher' cooked as well, allowing us to see how she did it and when a dish was finished, we sampled what she had cooked. The dishes we cooked were labeled with our name and taken away. Once all four dishes were complete, we were shown to a table in this absolutely beautiful restaurant and served what we had cooked.

I'm not a particularly big eater and any one of the dishes we made would have made a satisfying entree for me. Still, I was able to do justice to what I had cooked. It was very good although not as good as the what the teacher had made.

I learned a lot and had a fantastic time. Even though I couldn't really afford it, I still think it was an exceptional value.

We visited in Mid Jan 2014 on a rainy evening so decided to sit inside, we took the taster menu which was divine and well worth the extra costs.Excellent service very attentive and polite staff. Also tried the cocktails before dinner. It was rather expensive but worth the extra for a special occasion .

We had an amazing time. The venue, the food (we had the discovery menu),the atmosphere and the people. With our menu, we could taste Thai food from all over Thailand but to such a quality level and honestly in great quantity as we could not finish it, a great experience! The former governor's house is a a magic place and will be even more when the gardens will be done. The staff are really nice, discreet and efficient. Cherry on the cake is the manager, from Belgium. He really makes you feel like you are his personal guest and although the place is posh, he makes you feel so relaxed. Don't miss this restaurant, if you have between £30 to £40 incl drinks per head, it is definitely a must in Phuket.

Despite a number of taxi drivers trying to put us off going, we decided to book a mid week dinner. The entrance to the property is magnificent at night as you drive through the property to the beautifully restored building. On entrance there is a display cabinet with curry pastes, etc. It then struck us we have seen these before in an upmarket dept store at home in Perth Australia!!! Service was very friendly & attentive. The setting was captivating. We asked for a tour of the property including upstairs. It just so happened they were setting up for a function. The table settings were beautiful. We are sure the 100 plus guests would have been very happy.

The food: we started with a complimentary tasting plate which comprised of hot Thai beef salad, Tom yum soup & spring roll which were fantastic & set the scene with what was to follow. We ordered green curry chicken, massaman lamb, phad Thai & Thai pineapple fried rice. The taste sensations were amazing. If you are a fan of massaman curry, then this massaman lamb was the best we have had & we have travelled extensively!!! Although the price was on the high side for Phuket, it was still cheaper than eating in 5 star hotels & the bill including alcohol was well under what we would have paid at home for similar standard fine dine restaurant in beautiful setting.

We can't wait to return when we next visit Phuket Town.

We went to the Blue Elephant with friends who were celebrating their 30th anniversary. I have been fortunate to visit other restaurants in the group in London, Paris and Bangkok. However, I have to say this former Governor's Residence surpasses all other venues - it is truly gracious and impressive. Although I think the 'modern' bright bar is somewhat incongruous!!

Two of us chose the 'Tasters [set] menu .... however there was some confusion with the other orders of a starter and main courses. However, as it happened that didn't matter! The staff were attentive and the food and ambience fantastic. We were expecting it to be expensive ... but we were pleasantly surprised how reasonable the bill was! A definite 'must' for a special occassion .... and an opportunity to dress up [but, not essential!] The GM, Kim Steppe ... took time to speak with us ... he runs a great restaurant! Tip: Go for the Multi Course 'Tasters Menu'!
