“Very hidden quiet place, charming staff”
Reviewed 6 February 2013

We made a reservation via e mail. On the website is a map we downloaded. But when we arrived in Chiang Dao from Mae Salong, it took us 3 times driving through the center to find the way. After asking some local people. It would be better to make new big signs with a picture of a rainbow and
the name in capitals. We nearly gave up.
The big bungalow was really big and very clean. So was the bathroom. The bungalow is basic furnished.
The ladies running this place were very friendly and made us the vegetarian dishes we asked for. The view from the veranda is magnificent, paddies and a mountain.
You need a car or a bike or else you must walk whereever you like to go.
We did not visit the cave, because we saw so many. Unluckily it starten to rain very heavy and our plans to walk around were cancelled.
WIFI worked at first, but the second day it failed.
We like to come back here and enjoy like we did. They deserve 3,5 but that I can not fill in.

This is a small establishment with 2 bungalows and 2 other basic rooms overlooking a large rice paddy. As the bungalows are only about $25 night (the better one is a worthwhile $2 upgrade), only the most frugal (or unlucky) would want one of the basic rooms. The bungalows are simple but clean and comfortable, and the view is memorable.

Across the lane, the hotel offers a restaurant that is similarly inexpensive and worthwhile. Not the best Thai food of our trip, but good solid fare at reasonable prices. In the morning, you can get an inexpensive and tasty Western breakfast.

We happened to be in town for the Tuesday market, which is written up in some of the guidebooks. It's fine, but not worth going out of your way to attend. Nothing memorable to buy.

The Chiang Dao cave is worth a look. If you hire a guide, you get almost a "wild cave" experience. For a more relaxed look, just walk the lighted parts to the reclining Budda.

If you're driving, look for the small hotel sign on the main bypass road opposite the Aurora hotel. The Rainbow is a couple of blocks off this main road in a very peaceful setting (except for a few occasional barking dogs).

Rainbow is a really peaceful place to stay, the bungalows are really lovely and the views are beautiful. It is quite a way away from everywhere so there is a lot of walking involved, and taxi rides. It is a real shame that they don't have bicycles as it would be the best form of transport.
(all other resorts offer them, and places in town have them). The taxis really add up as it is a set fare of 150b into town. The staff are really lovely, but their English is limited, and though you are given language aids, things can get quite difficult. It's a shame as we got no advice on places to go and see, but when we went to 'Nest' for lunch they gave us all sorts of information.

The tours that are offered are also a bit sketchy, motorbikes would be the best form by far, with the taxis you pay an absolute fortune to see sights that are a little past their sell by date. I really really wouldn't recommend taking a taxi for any of the tours, they try and sell you all sorts of other tours whilst you are out, and no-one speaks any english so it's not like you are learning anything about the places you are going to see. This was especially the case with the hilltribes where you get dropped off in the middle of someone's village and you get told to 'shop'. After visiting hill tribes in Vietnam, it was a very disappointing experience. Though the tours are not officially with Chaing Dao Rainbow, they do recommend them in their welcome pack and arrange them for you.

We visited other resorts like 'Nest' for dinner and they were very nice, but we were always glad to go back to rainbow as it was so peaceful and quiet, and the other resorts were very busy with noisy families.

If i was to visit Chiang Dao again, I would visit rainbow again, as I don't believe you can get the same peace and quiet anywhere else, I just wouldn't take a tour!

Room Tip: Get one of the two bungalows as they have a great view of the rice paddies

We spent a few nights at Chiang Dao Rainbow in November, while discovering the surroundings (caves, hills, tribes). We booked on the phone the day before, from Chang Mai and were lucky to get a bungalow with view on rice fields. The bungalows are simple but nice, quite natural. The view on the rice fields and the moutains/hills is fantastic. It is very calm. The food is absolutely fabulous, and don't hesitate to trust the cook to prepare you a surprise menu (you can give general recommendations or if there something you can't eat, etc). Moreover, during our stay, the friendly co-owner, a retired professor, gave us during the meals very interesting insights in the thai society and history, as he ad been living there since some time. Great view, great conversation, great food. The owners have good contacts with local guides as well, and they helped us arrange some hikes and visits.

Room Tip: If available, the bungalows are the best choice you won't regret!

Chiang Dao Rainbow is in an amazing location, with a view of the mountains and rice fields. It's quiet, the two cottages are beautiful and romantic and the staff is incredibly friendly. Breakfast is great, I enjoyed the fresh fruit and pancakes. After finding out we liked the passion fruit, the cook drove all the way to the market to get us some.

If you're looking for a slice of rural Thailand, this is it!

The place is best reached by car or motorbike. The town is nearby, again best reached by motorbike or maybe car, and there are some restaurants, shops, a coffee place, a massage place and a great weekly market there.

The surrounding area is gorgeous, there are temples, nature walks, hot springs to explore.

There are cheaper options in Chiang Dao, but this one was definitely one of the highlights of our stay in Thailand.

We stayed here because we saw it in Lonely Planet and couldn't get a room at the Chiang Dao Nest. Thank goodness for that! This place was far, far superior and was much cheaper.

We stayed in the larger of the 2 bungalows. It was wonderful - the room itself has a balcony, large living space, 4 poster bed and en suite shower and loo. The view from the window is postcard perfect - paddy fields leading off to a mountain in the background. We ate here a few times (al fresco on the terrace by the main house) and loved the food.

We had a driver organised by the lovely Boo, one of the staff, for a very reasonable price. This enbled us to go for dinner one night at the Chiang Dao Nest (not recommended as it's expensive and not as amazing as everyone says it is - you're much better off just eating lovely food in a more peaceful setting at the Rainbow!), do a day trip of the local sights and get to the bus station. We also borrowed a couple of bikes to cycle to some local caves, which is recommended. Unfortunately I chose a pretty squeaky one geared bike, but that's my only downside to the whole experience of the Rainbow!

I would definately stay here again over any of the other places listed for the area.

Room Tip: If you can, choose the larger of the 2 bungalows to stay in as it has a better view and feels a bit...
