“Place in Heaven”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2014

We just came back from Karma Kandara. Prior going were concerned about the distance from Jimbaran and Nusa Dua as this is where we prefer to stay usually. But after seeing the place we had no regrets what's so ever. The beach I would say is the main attraction and this is what would drag us back definitely. It is the cleanest beach in Bali and you can enjoy snorkeling without going anywhere or paying for it. Even with lower level water during the day beach were left with natural holes filled with water and making it as a natural baths or little pools. You can have a bath with little fishes and corals. We enjoyed it very much and so is our 8 years old nephew. You can find as private beach lagoon as you wish or be in the center of the beach bar with sun lounges and beds and DJ. Even though it was not a lot of sun beds we could always find a free one if we need. My suggestion for the beach would be to wear the swimming shoes as there corals and prickly fished.
Our 3 bedroom villa, the pool and separate lounge/kitchen was great. When you first enter, it is quite wow with lots of water (the ponds/fish with stepping stones between the accommodation) features and well maintained surroundings. Everything was clean and comfortable as we were 2 families sharing the villa. Swimming pool was a good size for 5 of us. The only complain would be that having a steps out of black stone in the pool making it difficult to see them. Only 3 sun beds in the villa were not enough for 4 adults but I am sure if you ask staff to bring you one they will do it without any questions, we could not be bothered. Bed were pretty comfortable but for the resort of this level would be good to have a pillow menu. Pillows are all very hard and no alternative were offered. Would like to be able to have a feather/down pillow in stead of bringing my own from the home due to neck problem. Regarding luck of privacy in some villas, it did not bother us at all. Although there were some spots that people could see us near the pool while passing by, there were hardly any people walking too often, so not an issue at all. Unless I guess you decide to swim naked and even then in the evening it's safe :)
In general staff was very pleasant and make your stay very comfortable. Would like to make a spacial thank you to our concierge Anggi (not sure if spell is right). She suggested and organised both my brother and mine birthday in the fantastic restaurants and special cakes from the resort. She was very knowledgeable and professional and could speak great English and Russian.
Restaurant was great with healthy and organic food. Although pretty much expensive for Bali. We only had breakfast there. Service in restaurant and pool could be better as sometimes it took too long to deliver food which was not required cooking, such us cereal and yogurt. Staff should be trained to have kids meals deliver first and not wait until everything is prepared. Also make sure that you check your bill as you could find there extra juice or coffee.
Massages were excellent, the girl i particularly like is Suria, she is very experienced and has a healing hands. Massage place is breath taken. But we all agree that it is way too expensive.
Overall it's an unforgettable experience due to location. If you love clear water, natural environment and privacy, you should definitely come to Karma Kandara. Even though it is 40 min from Kuta and about 20 min from Jimbaran and Nusa Dua, taxi cost us around $10.00 Aus. But you will get rejuvenated and relaxed in the best way in this place. Honeymoon and wedding there is out of the fairy tale.

Dear LiveWELL,

Till this day, I still feel like I’m in a dreamland as I walk through the resort and I am glad you felt the same. Our beach is quite beautiful and very clean, compared to others in the area. The reef and shallow lagoon like waters make it great for snorkeling or just relaxing in the sun. We also offer stand-up paddle boards and kayaks for those looking to get more active.

Our villas are special in many ways, one is the amount of space you have in regards to our 3 and 4 bedrooms villas. As you mentioned, 5 people can live comfortably here at Karma Kandara and not feel, crowded.

Anggi (spelt right) is one of my best Concierge as she has been with us for some time now and thank you for recognizing her and her abilities. I will be sure to pass them on.

You give some great feedback in regards to the service at the Di Mare which I will be looking into so that we may improve our quality of service to go with our scrumptious dishes.

We appreciate you taking the time to spread your words of joy about Karma Kandara. When you return to Bali remember how amazing it is here at and the gorgeous surroundings that come with it.

Warm regards,

Geoff Drake

Karma Kandara is set on the most southerly part of the island containing its own private beach, accessed via the cable car. Its a stunning location with great views and very well designed. I did read that some guests were concerned with privacy and overlooking - not so the case for us and in the main it does seem well designed to maximise the land usage, however on the newer section (at the top) and possibly elsewhere I can probably understand that there could/would be some overlooking.

Our 3 bedroom villa, the pool and separate lounge/kitchen was excellent. When you first enter, it is quite wow with lots of water (the ponds/fish with stepping stones between the accommodation) features and well maintained surroundings.

On the downside the lighting in the bathrooms is particular poor, especially for shaving or for the ladies (make-up, hair etc) and we thought that the kitchen was quite poorly stocked (pots and pans) in case you wanted to cook - which we didn't really!!

Our own pool was great - just big enough, although we only had 3 flat sun loungers and 3 chairs (really should be 4 beds). The sun did disappear from the villa patio/pool early to mid afternoon, which meant a trip to the main pool or beach

The main pool is fantastic with great views over the Indian ocean and great poolside service (food and drink), however there are less than a dozen beds by the pool so not really enough room or you need to be early or time it right. We did venture to the beach a few times. Great DJ and music. More than enough room, cabana's and beds + an extension to the spa for massages, which was great, but isn't a huge beach and not much to do.
The Spa is pretty good too - in particular the Balinese massages and reflexology

Di Mare for us was a stand-out restaurant. Fantastic food. BIG shout out to the chef Wijang Wibi who we asked to meet. Nothing was a problem and you can make your own dishes. 5* dining for sure. We were very happy with the prices (very happy! - if you've been to Barbados, then Bali is extremely good value)

It is a fairly quiet / relaxed resort with limited things to do, so if its a relax you want, then this is definitely for you. My wife and friends we were with weren't too bothered about rushing out and about although Nesu Dua is worth a look (quiter than Kuta or Seminyak beaches). For me its a bit quiet as I like to be busy, seeing things or doing things - but thoroughly enjoyed my stay and actually enjoyed doing not a lot (for a change). The Balinese people we met, not just at the resort, but when we did go out (taxi drivers / shops etc) were lovely and helpful.

Money - from the UK, but just took Dollars. Should have just taken ££ and some Rupiah. Exchange rates in the towns were good and most shops/locals didnt take US

We visited in June, just before hi-season starts. Met Geoff and Dona - both were fabulous/great and in general all staff were really helpful and service was great (even the in-villa dining, which some people have said was slow - not for us, but again we weren't high season)

Hi Carl,

It sounds like you truly enjoyed yourself here at Karma Kandara and we look forward to your return. The villa you described is our Balinese style villa. The layout of these villas are particular unique as they were built with the culture of Bali in mind.

Our gardening team do a fantastic job making sure this beautiful, lush and exotic resort look spectacular. As you mentioned we are a bit away from town however you can’t get such a picturesque scenery like we have here, in Bali.

I am glad you enjoyed your meals and the service that came with them. We are constantly working to make sure this resort shines in guests’ satisfaction and overall exceptional vacation experiences. However for the chefs who prefer cooking in the villa, we do have a variety of cooking dishes, pots, pans and utensils available upon request.

Thank you so much for your feedback and letting the world know how amazing your stay with us was. We hope to see you again here at Karma Kandara soon.

From Donna, myself, and the Karma staff – Best wishes!

Warm regards,

Geoff Drake

Stayed at karma with my family had a 3 bedroom villa, the villa was spacious the private pool was lovely and the staff where very friendly. The resort has a community never ending pool that overlooks the ocean. The bar and hotel dining area sits at the top of the cliff top and the views are amazing. The private beach was wonderful. The only down side is the distance from Kuta. It is about a $30 AUD cab charge although a private driver would of been more cost efficient. Definitely will stay there again. Fantastic for a honeymoon.

Dear Pmac,

Thank you so much for you wonderful words. We, here at Karma Kandara do what we can to make sure all vacations are top notch. The Main pool next to the Di Mare is absolutely exquisite as it is a hot spot for breathtaking photos and weddings. Di Mare itself has an eagle’s eye view of the vast Indian Ocean and its majestic blue waters. The Karma beach is just as amazing as the ocean is more like a lagoon with an array of tropical fish and an energetic reef you can see while snorkeling.

The villas at Karma Kandara are extremely spacious as you mentioned and were happy you enjoyed it so much. And taxis are a great option in Bali, however you get just that, a taxi. Our drivers are well spoken in English, friendly, and the ride is most comfortable which is why they are such a great option.

I do hope to see you again here at Karma Kandara soon and thank you again for the kind words.

Warm regards,

Geoff Drake

It's definitely beautiful and a spectacular view but pretty overrated with a US$25 entry fee to get to the beach club with conditional use of sun beds and towels. Honestly wouldn't rush there again - very expensive to probably keep day guest number to a limit. Beach is also very rough, full of peebles and was unusable. If you want to go make sure you make a reservation. Wouldn't recommend in a hurry - better things to do in a Bali!

Dear Tanya O,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with other travelers here on tripadvisor.
We are sorry you experienced the beach when it was rough and full of pebbles, this can vary a lot depending on the tides.

Entrance fee to Karma Beach Bali is 250,000 of which 100,000 is credited back towards your food and beverage and 150,000 allocated towards amenities and facilities. Sunbeds are subject to availability but we always ensure all of the guests at the beach club have seating.

We truly regret that you did not enjoy your beach day with us and we truly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our beach for a true karma beach experience, please be sure to let us know on bali@karmabeach.com.

Kind Regards,

The best thing about the Karma Kandara is its location - situated on a clifftop above a private beach at South Kuta about 30 minutes drive from Denpasar airport (taxis are easily booked at the airport for about USD16 as opposed to USD50 for the hotel car); the views from the restaurant and pool are spectacular, and the beach (accessed via an inclinator) is a great place for a massage although swimming is not so inviting due to many rocks and an unpredictable surf.
The resort itself is designed as a "get away from it all" place. Its reasonably isolated, about a 15 minute taxi ride from the nearest village. This might be a good or bad thing depending on what you are looking for (get a card from a friendly taxi driver and call them directly rather than get the hotel to organise one - it's haf the price !
The resort is built on a hillside and the narrow roads between the villas are quite steep and difficult to negotiate if you are older - although carts are available for transport if needed.
The villas themselves are very diverse. We shared a 4 bedroom villa between a family of 4 and 2 other couples - the villa layout made this easy as there was 2 levels with a bedroom and bathroom on the lower level, and a separated area on the upper level with 2 bedrooms and a bathroom, as well as the main bedroom and ensuite, and a large kitchen and living area. Other 4 bedroom villas had 2 completely separate villas. The villas are comfortable and large with private pools although these are somewhat exposed to neighbouring villas, and they could do with some updating. The kitchen is well equipped with a full size dishwasher.
Continental breakfast was included and consisted of fruit and a large basket of pastries and toasts. Extra breakfast options (local and western style) were also available, Overall the food was of average quality and resaonably expensive; some of the local restaurants will deliver which is genarally better value.
Karma Kandara is recommended for romantic getaways or groups of friends sharing a vacation. We did not see many children at the resort although it does offer a kids' club. The staff are very friendly and helpful and I could not fault the service. One issue is that only one key is issued per villa - so if you are sharing a villa between a number of couples/families, it might be hard to co-ordinate this - or leaving the villa unsecured which might be a little risky,
All in all, a 5 star location, but really a 3 star resort.

Dear Dr_Gasman88,

Your feedback is valuable so thank you for taking the time to write this review. Are villas are extremely spacious and provide the privacy one wants if sharing with other couples or family. The living rooms are spacious to spread out but not too spacious to feel far from others. The fully functional kitchen is great for the “do it yourselfers”.

Meter taxis are readily available and the quality is just that. Just like all 5 star resorts, private cars are available with personal meet and greet at the airport and amenities in the car for you such as refreshment and guaranteed high quality of service. As for the high tide, it is rare we get such high tide at Karma Beach but usually gust are able to relax in calm crystal clear water, easy to float in and great for snorkeling.

The menu at the Di Mare is undergoing a transformation so you can expect the quality and taste to be of 5 star quality as most agree it is. When it comes to security, we are very diligent about making sure guests are safe. One way we do this, is by having special keys made in Germany so they can’t be duplicated on the street. We give one key per villa to minimize the chances of one losing a key. However, we do have extra keys for guests with more than one occupier available upon request.

I am glad you loved the scenery, the ocean, the service, the villas, and the overall Karma Kandara experience. We do hope you come back and visit us for the beach and try out our new menu.

Warm regards,

Geoff Drake

We are just back home from a week at Karma Kandara in Bali. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is a beautiful place, lovely gardens and amenities and such a quiet spot. We stayed in. 2 x 2 villa and initially asked to be moved because of noise coming from a building site next door to us. The management were happy to attend to us ASAP,and we were very comfy in our new villa. The restaurant and beach cafe/bar offered great service and an appetising array of food. All staff very attentive and happy to chat with us. Must mention Jillian down at the beach cafe and Sylvia our personal concierge as being particularly helpful and looking after us so well. Overall, great place to take a break from a busy life, be spoilt, and smell the roses( actually the frangipani)..... Beautiful.

Room Tip: There are some newer villas, but they are further away from the restaurant and cable car down to the...

Dearest Pauline,

It is such a joy to see that you had a truly blissful stay with us and we look forward to your return. Expansion is good and we at Karma Kandara are doing just that. We are implementing about 10 more villas in this magnificent location but it comes with a bit of noise. I am happy we were able to find you something a bit more tranquil then the sound of hammers.

Our di Mare and Karma beach club make some pretty delicious food, especially the Karma Wellness Menu which is easy on the palate and the diet.

Again, thank you for you feedback and letting us know how much you enjoyed yourself.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014

My friends and I (7 of us) booked a 4 bedrooms villa in early May to attend a wedding in Alila and we have stayed there for 4 nights.

We were really disappointed with the villa we were given (Villa 46) for the following reasons:
1. We booked a 4 bedroom villa, however, one of the bedrooms was a temporary room with sliding doors in the living room and there was no bathroom attached to it. Before we arrived, my friend has double checked with the hotel whether each bedroom has its bathroom. When we asked about it upon arrival, they said there was nothing that can be done as the hotel was fully booked and there was no other villa which we could change to. On our receipt, it stated that ours are in fact a 3 bedroom villa with added beds but the fact was that we have paid for a 4 bedroom villa!!!! Unfortunately, we arrived late evening that day and we have already paid everything before we arrived! And we could just stayed there.
2. One of the shower (of the 3 washrooms) were out of order on the day of our arrival! And it remained so for 2 more nights before they fixed it! Imagine 7 of us sharing 2 bathrooms on the first few days of our vacation, how ridiculous it is for what you are expecting from a 5 star hotel.
3. The air conditioner of one of the bedrooms were out of order for 1 night and believe me, it was really hot in May. The maintenance took quite some time and it was not easy to have these maintenance people in your villa for almost an hour at night.
4. There was an outdoor pool and one outdoor bath-tub but it was of limited privacy as you could easily see someone in their balconies above it.
5. There was no toothbrush/ toothpaste provided. And there was only 1 indoor bathtub available in the whole villa.
6. The safe was not working properly. When I asked someone to come and fix it, it remained broken till the last day of my stay.
7. Service was slow. A lamp was not working, I waited for 2 days before someone changed the light bulb. And if you want to call a golf cart, reserve about 15 minutes for that. (which you can easily walk the distance thrice)

The good things:
1. The beach was really nice which you can do snokelling, canoe, swimming...and the bonus is the tram getting you down there in a few minutes. But some part of the beach was covered by sharp corals, so be careful. You can see small pretty fish, sea urchins, jelly fish...
2. The breakfast area was really nice and the pastries tasted really fresh and good. The coffee brew was also nice.

Both of these things can be done without actually staying in the villa. So if I can choose again, I would probably stay somewhere and take a day trip to Karma beach and enjoyed the sunset at their restaurant. That will do.

It was really disappointing to see the hotel being situated in such a beautiful area with such poor hotel service and maintenance. And for the price we paid, I think it was over-charged.

Dear Noel,
The beach is magnificent I must say, one of the best in Bali. Just listening to the waves makes you forget everything. The Continental package is huge and you said it best, “fresh”.
I am sorry to hear about all the troubles you faced whilst on vacation with us. As you can imagine, when a resort is running at full capacity, assistance with the buggies is needed quite often. As other 5 star resorts, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream, raisers, and so many more amenities are complimentary and available upon request. I am sorry you were not informed of this.
I’m surprised it took so long to get the light bulb replaced. I am sorry this happened to you and I will be taking a closer look as to why we weren’t able to react quicker.
A beautiful location deserves amazing service and work hard to get there. Thank you again for your valued feedback as we can’t get there without it.
