“week stay at Riverside”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

lovely relaxed holiday, very helpful and friendly staff, beautiful setting by the river, the rooms were really spacious and up to date, cleaned every day. only downside is not much else around the hotel and taxis are a nightmare, wasted a lot of time waiting for taxis to turn up if you ordered 2 taxis then one would come and not the other. so advice is to hire a car as not much is within walking distance. food although ok, did become very repetitive and we longed for vegatables especially. did go out for dinner on a couple of occassions to nice restaurants but quite expensive compared to English prices.

changed room after opening curtains on first day to have a coach car park outside our room with the engines running horrible fumes. We decide to take a look at the spa/pool, it was full of teenagers running wild around the pool area, not pleasant at all, was told to come back later, not impressed. you have to wear a swimming hat which they charge 6 euros for...no staff to turn on the water jets or lights...the hot tub had so much chlorine in jacuzzi it made our eyes sting and other guest too experienced the same problem.

NO hair dryer in the room you have to ask for one from reception, they are very reluctant to give you a hairdryer, No iron in the room, very limited information about the area and transport links....

As stated very limited veggie options, I asked if there was a veggie option, and got told a very snappy way...NO....I did suggest maybe a veggie option could be placed on the menu, only to have a very intimidating5 second stare from the arragent man on the reception and was told that MOST PEOPLE EAT MEAT, I have to say my husband is a meat eater, but sometimes goes for the veggie option...
Rooms are very very dark and you would nearly have to carry a torch with you, putting any make up on is very hard, the towels are very thin indeed and they where still soaking wet the next morning...
The corridors are very dimly lit, the whole building is dark and very depressing...
After our evening meal there was nowhere to have a drink, no bar staff, no seating area we had to go back to the room, it resembled a dormatry/bad travel lodge.
The last straw was having a two big crates of dirty sheets and towels left outside out room for over 24 hours and 4 fold up beds left by the lift area...I understand It was the same on other floors...
I asked to see managment about the problems with the hotel and the lady agreed with our grievances and was hoping to improve on the problems we and others had highlighted to her.

The hotel is next to a very smelly river, as others have stated not very nice at all...

If you are thinking of booking this hotel, please read other reviews and bear in mind, staff need a lesson in customer services, location not good by a smelly river, in the middle of nowhere, my advice is please look elsewhere dont want anyone to experience what we did it spoil our holiday...would never never recommend this hotel to my worst enemy

Room Tip: my only advice would be dont stay there go elsewhere

We stayed 4 nights. The home was perfect for all staff. Outdoor parking and underground parking very secure for the rental car. Excellent and careful restoration both breakfast and dinner. I highly recommend for relaxation and exceptional value for money.

Stayed for ten nights early June. The advertised river shuttle had not been approved by officials therefore was not running. Were told that the local bus service was not reliable and as there were no restaurants or bars in the local vicinity it meant either doing organised trips or getting taxis. The breakfast was good but you need to ask if you want poached egg for example. Initially charged for tomato juice, as orange squash undrinkable, however manager did refund this and changed this decision. Lunch and dinner were below par and monotonous. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Dogs roam loose too! Made the best of it and did have a good holiday but on the whole I would not recommend this hotel unless you just want to relax in the sun.

My partner and I enjoyed a superb relaxing 10 day stay end of may beginning of june, the facilities were exactly what we needed ,the staff were very friendly and attentive. We particularly enjoyed the great special menus changing nightly and also the chef taking time to talk to us about his food.
We went for a relaxing time and that is what we got ,very quiet, just right , no rubbish poolside forced activities and no amateur cringeworthy entertainers at night ,just excellent food and drinks and great service
We will be returning to the hotel or indeed one of its sister properties, recommended.

Stayed here for 4 nights middle June, did not want to leave. location overlooking a big river with gorgeous sunsets, views over river especially at night sat with drink just lovely. rooms large, very modern and clean, staff very polite and helpful, yes their English is not the best! but why should it be, we should make a little effort. Obrigado and a smile from us goes a long way. whilst we were there, it changed from waiter service to buffet, which I prefer being a fussy eater! always lots of choice. We went all inclusive, which I recommend as there is very little in the area for restaurants. the hotel is quite remote, ideally you need a car to get around (car hire very cheap in Portugal if booked online before you go, recommend economy car hire, used them twice) only 5 min walk to nearest shop/local eating place, otherwise 30 min walk to nearest village, Ferraguda, which is lovely, otherwise it's a taxi to any beaches or over the river to Portimao. Hotel trying to arrange a river taxi, otherwise go over the bridge, left to small marina and look for Silves river taxi, they will pick you up from jetty belonging to hotel and take you up river to Silves, well worth the trip, 20 euros, trip lasts approx 3 hours, the they drop you back, easy. lovely little infinity pool, again overlooking river plus indoor small pool & gym, jacuzzi. we asked emailed and asked for river view. will go back for longer next time. P.s. Very generous with drinks on A1

This was a rather interesting place to stay as it was a fair distance away from the airport. It was a nice clean hotel with very helpful staff. I had hung my swimming shorts out on the balcony and a gush of wind had blown them away and but they managed to retrieve them and give them back to me. Portamao town is down the road but is a really dead town, it's a hotel perfect to just relax and unwind and forget the rest of the world. No noise just pure calm and peace surrounds you.
