Out third time at Vale D'El Rei, the first in summer as been at Easter for last 2 years. We fancied trying it in the warmer weather and once again had a townhouse which is ideal with 3 children aged 6, 10 & 12. Were here for 10 days and hired a car which, although quite expensive, (about €300 for an almost brand new Peugeot 308 4 door) was definitely worth it as it meant we could get out and see the Algarve as well as visiting the numerous beaches in the area.

We had breakfast included and made our own food for lunch & dinner which suited us. The resort was full but always lots of tables for breakfast and the pool was never too busy. Also never a problem getting a sun bed in the morning after breakfast.

We had town house 23 which is directly opposite the smaller pool and has parking right in front of the house so saves a walk! Great place, very relaxing, personally I would go for the hire car as I like to come and go when I please but there is a free bus to the beach and Carvoeiro.

We went to the Medieval Festival n Silves which is just up the road and is highly recommended if you are there when it is on (10 days in August I think).

10 days in a Town House set in the grounds of this lovely hotel 10 mins outside of the main town provided just the escape we ere looking for. A free shuttle bus is available to take you in to town and to the local beach. The accommodation was great, with large open spaces on two levels. Air con in all the main space help keep the temperature comfortable.

The grounds offer two pools, and plenty of space to get away from it all. The food was varied and well presented.

The staff were all very welcoming, and were able to offer us everything that we asked for during our stay.

The Portuguese night was nicely presented, and attracted a good turn out from the hotel. Local food, drink and music set in the surrounds of the hotel provided a great backdrop.

The cocktail bar provided a nice end to the day. A pianist plays most nights.

The taxi ride back from town later in the evening cost about 10 Euros. You can end up waiting up to 30 minutes for a taxi at busy times.

The only observation I would make is that we all suffered from bites as a result of sitting out side to eat. It seems to be an established problem. So take some inspect repellent with you.

Room Tip: Choose a town house over looking the small pool if you can. We were in TH 28 and our view of the grounds was not as good.

    Dear Phil b,
Thank you very much for your review. Due to an exceptionally warm Summer we've noticed a higher rate of mosquitos, we do have a lot of frogs in the water stream though and it works...:-) looking forward to seeing you back with us. kind regards, Joao Costa

Have just returned home from a 7-night stay at this hotel and was very impressed. I would echo what others have said about the lack of heat in the “hot” buffet food, and the noise around the larger pool, but this can be easily avoided by slipping away to the smaller pool which seemed to attract a quieter clientele. Food in the a la carte restaurant was lovely and I’d highly recommend a 5 minute walk ‘through the back gate’, which leads you to a nice little restaurant (Brasserie Rosal).

The staff at the hotel were all fabulous and very attentive – with a particular mention to Jose Pedro (buffet) and Marcio (Calabash bar) who couldn’t do enough to be of service. The bars were both very well stocked and I particularly enjoyed trying out each of the bars’ cocktails of the day, which would be offered at a discounted price.

We tried out the spa on one of the days, which was lovely and on checking in received a 10 Euro voucher off all treatments which was an extra bonus.

All in all a very relaxing and peaceful holiday was had and I wouldn’t hesitate to return – but next time I’d pack some mosquito repellent for the evenings!

The hotel is spotless, the staff (Marcio) cannot do enough for you, it is in a rural spot which means its lovely and quiet at night. The A la carte restaurant was very good, the pool bar evening buffet was O.K. for 1 night (half bored could become boring), The breakfast was good for cold stuff (continental) but unfortunately the hot selection is not even warm (disappointing) and the pool bar snacks where also very good. The grounds are excellent, well maintained and always spotless. There are 2 pools and we found the smaller pool by the villas to be very peaceful as any kids tended to hang around the larger pool closer to the amenities. Improvements - This day and age any 4/5 star hotel should have free WiFi, 60 Euro's for a week! I don't think so. Please keep the hot food HOT!
Overall I went on to this hotel to chill out and it does just that, I couple of minor niggles but I would go back and perhaps try one of the villas and hire a car to do some exploring. Although I did enjoy not having to drive for the week and use the hotel free minibus to get into town or go the beach.

    Dear Eviladj,
Thank you very much for your review. We do take into consideration your remarks but please note one week WIFI is 30,00€ as our guests benefit from a 50% reduction, we do understand your point about free internet but by charging internet is the only way we can provide good quality of speed, on top of that we have made a big investment to bring high-speed WLAN to the country side. We will work on the HOT food as we understand warm is not just enough. Look forward to have you back with us. Kind regards, Joao Costa-GM Details Hotels & Resorts

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in early July, as far as certain aspects were concerned. All the staff we met were lovely. Admittedly some were more professional than others or had a better grasp of English than others, but all were trying their very best to please. Each member of staff was very customer focused. We had several conversations with them and this came across very strongly. Reception staff were very professional and exceptionally helpful when we had an issue with our tour operator. Hats off and thank you to Ana Paula, Jose Pedro, Pedro Mendes, Ricardo, Carlos, Christina and all the other staff who made our stay and enjoyable one. Remember us, we were in Room Cento Ee Oyto!

We had a free upgrade to half board but this was a bit of a poisoned chalice. I certainly wouldn't have tried this more than twice if I'd had to pay for it. We stayed for 11 nights and ate outside the hotel on 3 occasions, once in Carvoeiro and twice in the nearby Brasserie Rosal, only a few minutes walk away down the through the gate at the bottom of the Hotel gardens.. The Brasserie's BBQ night was really good (this is held on Tuesdays & Fridays). We also ate twice in Serenata, the hotel's on site a la carte restaurant. That left 6 nights of eating in the buffet, three of which were pretty awful and three were average canteen food. The buffet food was bland and lacked any kind of inspiration. I can honestly say that I would rather have had mince and potatoes. We found that the breakfast was far superior to that served in the evening.

The same buffet was open for lunch, but we never tried it. Instead we ate at the Pool Bar. We found the staff friendly and helpful and the food (burgers, toasties, pizzas, salads and the like) much better than the evening buffet efforts. The contrast between the Serenata and the buffet restaurant is decidely marked.

Service in the Pool Bar was slow, but mainly because it was quite busy. Staff cover people eating and drinking at both the Pool Bar and Buffet restaraurants, as well as attending to those just coming up to buy cold drinks and ice lollies to take back to the pool and gardens. It would be better if there was a dedicated bar to serve them. Instead waiting staff had to take time away from their duties to serve them.

Service at the Main Bar next to Reception was also slow. Only one barman served here, regardless of whether the place was empty or it was the welcome drink night, when the place was packed out for all of half an hour. On that occasion the bar ran out of glasses and he dispapeared to get more. The same barman had to run up and downstairs to the Pool Bar and Serenata if they needed a bottle of wine not avaialable from their stock. He also attended to room service drinks. We suggested to one of the barmen that it would be a better if he called for other staff to come to him for wine and bring him glasses, since he was the one on his own. At first he thought we were getting at him for being slow, then suddenly had a eureka moment when he realised how much more effective this would be.

On our second last night at about 11pm the lady manager came to us and asked us if we had any suggestions regarding any aspect of the hotel service. We gave her six ideas off the top of our head and added a few more to our end of stay survey. We offered constructive criticism and she was genuinely interested and wanted very much to improve the service in whatever way she could. The very next morning three of the issues we raised with her had been put in place. The other ides would take a bit longer and one involved spending some money, but she promised to take these forward at her next management meeting.

Our room was away from the pool, for which we were grateful. At around 4pm it became unbelievably noisy with children, and impossible for adults to get a decent swim. I think a lot of people had been out all day and just got back at that time so it went straight in the pool. Can't say I blame them.

Our room was spotlessly clean. The bed was one of the biggest and comfiest I've slept in. We didn't sit out in the balcony as there is no privacy panel between us and our neighbour. Thanks for the excellent air conditioning.

When buying a wifi package, whatever you buy must be used up within 7 days. So you can purchase 6 hours worth and as long as you switch off wifi between uses you can use that across 7 days. You don't need to buy a week's package unless you intend never switching off your wifi.

Pool Towels are available for hire at €1.50 each per day. Hand them in when you come up from the pool and get fresh ones the next morning. The pool towels were big fluffy ones, unlike the hard thin, smallish bath towels in the room.

The price of the stuff in the minibar is the same as that from the bar. However we stocked up with water and soft drinks both times that we visited Carvoeiro and saved a few bob, as the shop charges were half that of the stuff in the minibar.

The hotel, gardens and staff are lovely. If they could only sort out the evening buffet they would have a winner.
