My husband and I spent 5 lovely relaxing days here and it is the best European resort I have ever stayed in. The setting and views are jaw-dropping, the service is impeccable and the suites are huge. We didn't want to leave!

Whilst we were there, the guests were very varied. It was all European people, including families with small children, young and old couples. Everyone was clearly there for a relaxing break away from everyday life.

We didn't have a car but spent nearly all of our time at the resort as we wanted a relaxing holiday. however we did visit Carveiro one evening for dinner and our taxi cost about 10 euros one way and it only took 5-10 minutes.

Room Tip: all suites are large and come with black out blinds!

If you are looking for quality apartments in a beautiful quiet location then this is the place for you.The grounds of the resort are beautifully maintained & it has a village feel to it. The suites are large 2 bedroomed tastefully decorated apartments. The beauty of these suites is the freedom to either eat in the restaurant, room service, self-cater or eat out. The restaurant serves lovely food but it is expensive & room service is cheaper. You can self cater but it is a kitchenette with basic amenities. Breakfast is varied & plentiful.
The location is isolated but that is its attraction. The resort is set on cliff tops with an amazing vista over the sea. You are however only 15min away from the nearest town of Cavereiro so car hire is advisable. However we chose not to hire a car & took taxis everywhere which was very easy. There are also bikes to hire.
The beach is 2min walk which is a beautiful cove. There is also a beach bar which serves limited food to 8pm. There are lovely walks along the cliffs.
The spa is nice & has an inside swimming pool & jacuzzi & fully equipped gym. Treatments aren't that cheap but they do plenty of offers.
A must is a boat trip round the caves which are only appreciated by sea.
The staff were all very friendly & helpful.
There was a mixture of families, couples & people of all ages. There was a nice atmosphere here. I would definitely recommend this resort for a relaxing get away from it, soak up the sun sort of holiday.

We spent here 4 beautiful days with my wife.
A little bit was difficult to find and drive to the hotel, and definitely need car, but after was very easy to fallen love to the place.
Of course we can imagine other extremely high quality place in the world, but the value for the money and the quality together important.
Our first impression was the very beautiful garden, with charming villas. The hotel garden never was to busy.
The beach with the extraordinary view, and the rock cave … Fantastic!
The sea view villa with 2 bedrooms was perfect, clean, and big. The kitchen equipment a little bit simple, but its was enough, we didn't want to cook a big menu.
Staff in the reception and in the restaurant was very nice, and helpful. The breakfast perfect, and the quality of the dinner excellent. Maybe the price a little bit high. But easy to find other very good fish restaurants in a near, for example we tried the O Algar Restaurant up from the Benagil Beach (10 minutes by car from the hotel).
Our feeling was the hotel is very good with children too. (4example: outdoor pool, children playground…). We definitely will try it, because we will come back with our 3 small children in October.

Room Tip: I recommend the sea view villas 402, 404, etz

Our first time at Alba and an easy place to recommend.

It is easy to see that there is someone behind this place that has an eye for and appreciates quality. Well designed, maintained and run. Friendly staff throughout.

This is a place mainly for a quiet time although it does have a childrens playground for families too.

A car is a MUST and satnav a big advantage to find it – we used latitude – long input of 37.092961,-8.401902 on the TomTom which worked perfectly.

SELF CATERING
The only negative feedback we would make is that the kitchen is devoid of pretty much all the cooking utensils needed to cook a decent meal. Provided are 2 pans a frying pan and a chopping board with a couple of knives & that’s it. We did ask for and the staff found us a spatula & cooking spoon, (and kettle and water jug)… thank you. We would have given excellent if the kitchen was better equipped.

ROOMS
Speaking with other guests we heard that people staying in the rooms to the rear of the property (farthest away from the sea with room numbers starting with 2 I,e, 201, 202 etc) were troubled with mozzi’s. We did not have this problem in block 6. The front line sea view rooms looked the best spot with more grassed area available outside your patio. We liked our room - 601 - which overlooked the courtyard.

WI FI
The wi fi is expensive if you want it in the room but its free at the bar and at reception and you are never far from either so it wasn’t a problem for us and we run an online business. If you are close enough to the reception you may even be lucky enough to get it on the balcony/patio but its in and out.

ON A NIGHT
There is no evening entertainment (when we were there) and you need to be really lucky to hear any English programs on the TV – the DVD library was not much use either, sorry. It was not an issue for us as we ate out and about or enjoyed each others company over a bottle of red in the courtyard which is a lovely setting.

BEACHES

There a lots of small bays and coves and hidden places to explore. We found a great beach by driving to and through the little town of Benegil (next village), through a new housing estate to a dead end - walk down the hill and find the `tunnel` through the rocks which then opens up to a very nice beach and setting. See if you can find the `other` way in and out which is more like a pot hole than steps!!! Great fun.

WALKING
For walkers there are walks in both directions along the cliffs and also through the countryside from the door. Some world class spectacular coastline.

CYCLES
The pedal cycles are free and the motor assisted ones were great fun but more expensive per hour than the hire car!!

HIRE CAR
For the hire car we used Luzcars and we were more than happy – they did not insist upon the extras for the motorway tolls and explained that the gov` don’t chase overseas drivers – we will have to see if that works out. It’s a month since our return and we have not heard anything as yet so looks like sound advice. Luzcars were really relaxed and no hard sell or extra insurance to pay on arrival – no hassle.

SUPERMARKETS
There are supermarkets in just about every town on the Algarve and the nearest is in Lagoa where you have a choice of Jumbo, Aldi and Inter-Marche

EATING OUT
Just one recommendation for eating out ….. DON’T go to the fish and meat grill house which is set back from the main road on the M530-1 half way between Porches and Armacao de Pera – it’s the one under a massive tree 100 yards from the road, (cant find it on TA) – not that far from the InterMarche supermarket. BIG MISTAKE.

All the comments are intended to be helpful to travelers and are not complaints, it is easy to recommend this place.

Thank you to Mr Agostinho for your recommendations and places to visit – we found some excellent `hidden` spots & thank you to Ana for your perfect `American`. To be fair all the reception staff were brilliant – and also a special thank you to the lady that runs the breakfast for her attention to detail and helpful manner.

Yes, we would stay here again.

Room Tip: during our stay the occupants in block 2 appeared to be troubled by mozzi`s.

There were some good points to this place. The apartments are good looking with quite a lot of space inside. The gardens are well kept. They have a playground for young children. The breakfast was quite good, plenty of choice and good quality and quantities and self serve. The resort is near a beautiful beach within a cove and has a Jumbo supermarket a short drive away that is much like an Asda. Now I am struggling to find anymore positives to say about it.
On to the negatives.
*The climb down to the beach is down a rocky hillside with no actual designated pathway until you get quite close to the beach. I wouldn't want to take young children down there as it was much too dangerous and beach style shoes like flip flops are a no no as it's far to uneven for that.
*You need a car, as it's in the middle of no-where but the only road to the place is inadequate, one lane wide with a few passing places here and there and many holes in the road to avoid.
*There are no sun shades in the car park, which cooks the car like an oven. Even the cheaper supermarkets had sun shades in their car parks and this place is supposed to be 5*!
*When we arrived there was a wedding party there and it meant that the peace and quiet that was promised was not delivered that night. The same thing happened the next weekend so I think they probably host a lot of wedding parties, this was not made clear upon booking.
*Although the villas look good, there is little privacy. Our youngest son told us that he'd forgotten to pull the curtains and saw some random person looking at him whilst he was in his bedroom. Anyone can see in from most places, pull the curtains!
*Each night there was a high pitched whistling noise coming from our bathroom for varying periods of time, I decided that it was probably coming from the extractor fan in the villa above us. Not a great design or quality and very annoying for all the family. Tinnitus for all!
*The TV had very limited channels and the DVD choices (available from reception) that were said to be all English, were actually not and were a very strange selection. The TV was also in the corner of the room in the side alcove next to the fireplace so to view it we had to skew the TV round and move all the furniture. The maids would then insist on putting it all back so we ended up doing this every night!
*There was no iron or ironing board.
*The Air Con didn't work.
*The only hairdryer (and mirror) was attached to the bathroom wall so with a family of 4 all having showers at least once a day and the only toilet being in there too, access to the hair dyer was limited at best. Why not have one in the bedroom?
*The bathroom was in need of repair with recessed light fittings hanging out of the ceiling.
*The kitchen had only the bare essentials and these weren't clean! There were only 4 of each item of cutlery for a family of 4 so every time you used something you then had to clean up straight away. We ended up buying our own cutlery at the local Jumbo because some of what was supplied was actually rusty!
*There were 6 odd shaped and sized glasses, some too small for anything but one gulp!
*There was a rusty bottle opener which my partner took to reception to ask for another one but there weren't any available. Eventually one of the staff tried to convince my partner that it was fine, said he'd wash it and it fell apart in his hands!
*The kitchen had warped floor tiles over damp, mouldy floor which I kept tripping over.
*The kitchen cupboards had mould in them and smelled bad.
*There was no Kettle!!!!
*There was a coffee machine in the kitchen but we were promised complimentary coffee pods for the machine which never turned up despite asking for them several times.
*I tried using the coffee machine to supply just hot water to make tea with, in the absence of coffee or a kettle but the machine poured out some old bits of coffee with the water which was strange as there wasn't even a coffee pod in there.
*We used the dishwasher every day but the maids unloaded it whilst we were just leaving and we witnessed one of them spill the cutlery all over the (warped, mouldy) floor then proceed to put it all into the cutlery drawer anyway.
*The maids opened the patio door just a little bit and left them open which I only noticed by chance when the wind moved the curtains. All the windows and doors had sliding openers with flimsy little click locks on them. I had to go around each night checking all the windows and doors making sure the place was secure. I read that there were attempted thefts of the cars in the car park and there is no security system.
*The bed was ROCK HARD! I ended up with 3 mattress protectors and 2 duvets on my bed just to sleep on top of, I then used my bath robe as a blanket. Not much sleep for me!
*Internet was only free in the public lounge where they had one Computer available.
*The restaurant staff seemed unmotivated at best and appeared to avoid eye contact so as not to serve you. Several times we had to go in search of waiting staff to ask for things for our dinner table. We were left to wonder what was going on for most of our dinner.
*The food was very expensive, looked good but tasted average. My 15 year old son couldn't eat his meat because it was too tough and he usually can eat anything.
*The hot chocolate was undrinkable.
*The coffee was awful
*The milk tasted like it was UHT!
*The music was odd and too loud.
*The bar was soulless and uninviting.
*We were told we needed to book at the restaurant but this turned out to be untrue as obviously word was out about the poor service and food, it was empty!
*The outdoor pool was fffff freezing!
*The indoor pool was very small, you felt compelled to go as soon as someone else got into it.
*My sons were told to get out of the pool by spa reception staff because they didn't have swim hats, we then asked for swim hats at the spa reception and were charged 5 euros for each one!
*The indoor pool is overlooked by gym goers through a glass wall so you swim whilst being watched by people running on treadmills like you are their entertainment!
*The water spouts and very small Jacuzzi were not able to be operated from within the pool itself, to have them switched on you had to get out of the pool and ask at the Spa reception for someone to turn them on for you!
*There was no hair dryer or shampoo or shower gel in the shower/changing rooms.
*One of the boys toilets was broken.
*The cost of services in the spa was at least twice the price anything at my local Saks salon. It worked out at above 1 euro per minute!!
After writing this, I think I am going to ask for my money back. How they got a 5* rating, I don't know. I have been to better 3* places.
Luckily, the activities that we did on our holiday made up for the sub-standard accommodation. Check out Land Sailing, swimming with dolphins at Zoomarine and Segway birdwatching, lots of fun. Algarve-great, Suites Alba-Not worth the money.

Room Tip: If you had a higher floor maybe it would be a little more private, less noisy from the extractor fan of other villas and peoples feet above. Also, avoid a villa on the pool/beach side as the wedding receptions are very disruptive.
