Maresias Hostel - Pousada San Sebastian
Ranked #7 of 48 Maresias B&B and Inns
Reviewed 11 March 2012

i´ve been to maresias hostel for my vacations since 2006. it´s a very well administered hostel, with everything you can look for - surf boards, books, films, games, swimming pool, resting corners, plants, snacks, special bar for those who wanna drink beer, sing, stay the night long awaken, a huge breakfast... they can book your next hostel via skype for you! and they give all kind of information about the place.
beds are reasonably good (up beds are difficult to be reached) and all of them offer a personal ventilator, night light and plug! Besides, all bedrooms have tv set.
what is not so good: kitchen is not clean enough (due to the big number of hosts and some of them not clean...), too small and hot, and lacking pans and glasses. Also they are not able to control completely the noise in the hostel after 22 o´clock, so sometimes it´s not a good hostel for resting.
But people are very nice, and all suggestions are taken seriously.

This hostel feels different from a lot of other hostels we stayed at in Brazil that are mostly packed with international backpackers. San Sebastian, however, was full with Brazilians. Families with kids and young Brazilians created a really nice atmosphere. Even though there is language barrier people tried to have conversations with us the whole time.

The kitchen was very well equipped and was kept very clean. Breakfast was really, really good. Every day there were two home made cakes that were delicious. You also got fruit, cheese, ham, jelly, granola and bread. It was definitely better than the average breakfast (that is already good) in Brazilian hostels.

The hostel also operates a public bar. This bar attracts a lot of other people that are in town. It is very cozy and I really enjoyed the music.

The rooms are absolutely ok but could need some paint. Beds seemed clean and were comfortable. The bathroom was good.

We payed 58 R$ for a private room. This was really, really good value. Actually it was surprising to find such an inexpensive hostel in Maresias as the town is extremely expensive otherwise.

Been there for 8 days (March 27 - April 4), it was low season but weekends are packed of people while weekdays are good to relax and travel to nearby beaches and town, most recommended is Ilhabela, about 7 miles east from Maresias.
The hostel staff is very kind and helpful, stayed at a shared room ensuit and it was big enough to be confortable. The bathroom was lately remodeled and it was very nice.
The swimming pool is great to hang out after beach, but closes at 10pm. The hostel's bar is very good, great music and cheap drinks (i.e. U$S1 beer), although not very crowded. For rainy days, you have many options like a large library, a huge DVD collection and other fun stuff to relax. THE HOSTEL LOCATION IS RIGHT BETWEEN THE BEST BARs IN TOWN!
Most important thing, guests of this hostel are VERY friendly, don't be shy and start conversations!!

It was our first time at São Paulo state coast. We could never imagine São Paulo had such beautiful beaches. Maresias is one of the most visited because the sea is excellent for surfers and they offer nice places to go out. One of the most famous dancing clubs of São Paulo state is located in Maresias. All of these facilities (dancing club, the beach, restaurants, small shopping areas) are nearly located at this Hostel (which is more like an Inn). Staff is friendly and very kind. They do speak english and other languages. Rooms are offered for couples or family (and / or friends). They do offer linen and towel for an extra cost. These are of good quality and clean. Rooms are wide; not that "art decór" room, but quite cosy. The bathroom is private; simple, but clean. The breakfast is good. They offer juices, milk, coffe, bread, ham, cheese, fruits and that continental american breakfast. They do have a pool which is nice for staying after the beach. The hall and entrance have a unique style; it's more like a lounge. There you can contact other travelers from worldwide. As said, near the Hostel it is located SIRENA, a Dancing Club where people have a nice time. It is a very famous Dancing Club of São Paulo state. If you plan to stay only in Maresias it is not necessary to have a car. But if you want to visit the other good and pretty beaches around São Sebastião, a car can be of great value, even because roads are well conserved and the nature views are amazing. Well, what else to say? That I am missing? Yes, the Hostel is nice and Maresias is amazingly interesting.
