We went primarily for the diving, to see the manta rays. We were not dissappointed, the first three visits to manta point, we saw numerous mantas, on the fourth visit, suprisingly they didn't show. Apparently mantas come all year round; we also saw many turtles, napoleon wrasse, sharks plus the normal reef fish. Maldives diving prices tend to be high and prices here were a bit higher than average for the maldives, but you do get great diving. Axle the boss was very helpful and eager to please.

The resort as a whole is a bit run down in places, e.g. tiles off in the pool, poor toilets etc, however the rooms and eating area/bar were clean; the food was also good. This wouldn't be classed as a luxury resort, it is 3 star, and there is not much to do if you are not snorkelling/diving. There are 2 free snorkel trips a day, though you will get better snorkel trips with the dive boat for $15/day. However, not being luxurious does have benefits - sunbeds were easy to come by, the resort was only about half full, so service was good. We did the last two weeks in August, the weather was very rainy, worse than normal. Staff were friendly, laid back atmosphere.

One of the poorer Maldives Islands, I found a lot of Russians on site, the rooms very very nice, with a comfy bed, the Hotel is the old Officers Quaters, from the days when the RAF were billeted on Gan, it is very handy for the airport, the beaches are very small, the food was ok, nothing special, but enough, would I go again? I doubt it

Room Tip: Ask for a non smoking room

This is the second time my wife and myself have been to the Equator Village Hotel, the first time being July 2010. We returned in July this year in some trepidation after reading reports of cockroaches, we never saw any like this on our first visit. We need not have worried, we had a fortnight of sunshine, bar one day, and there were no signs of anything moving in our air conditioned room apart from the odd fly. The rooms themselves have been upgraded and now have a fridge, television and coffee making equipment. The staff were great and could not do enough for us. The main reason being is that they outnumbered the guests! While we were there, we were the only English people, with two German and two Russian couples. The food was excellent with a wide variety of choice and sometimes, we were the only couple in the restaurant. My wife had a fortnight looking after the cats and we left them well fed in the hope that someone after us would continue to feed them. One member of staff did tell us that they had received complaints from guests regarding the cats begging for food from them. Surely the answer is to make sure they are well fed and they would not have to beg. The only other negative thing I can say about the visit was the Island hopping trip. The inhabited island was great and the guide who took us around told us a lot more that we were ever told three years ago. However, the small island where we had the barbeque is in a dreadful state with rubbish strewn all over. The staff did tell us that they were not the only ones to use the island but one visit with a couple of rubbish bags and the place could be cleaned up in next to no time, it's not that big. No one seems to want to accept responsibility for this though. I visited the villages a couple of times and found that the locals were always friendly and prepared to talk to you, even if their English wasn't that good. All in all, a very good holiday and we will probably return again in a couple of years.

Room Tip: The hotel is based in what was the Sergeants mess from the R.A.F. days so all accomodation is situat...

Good morning . I have just returned home to Slovakia from my stay at Equator Village Gan Maldives, stay 2.5 - 12.5 . 2013 room 106, via ITS operator.
Everything was well organized , staff of hotel friendly to the tourists. In the garden and at the terraces of the rooms are running and living very lovely cute cats, they are decorations of garden. They are very hungry and local staff has never given them any food. My german friends and me were feeding them. Please, don’t let them starve to death . All tourists were shocked by your attitude to cats and hens. Could you give cats rest of the meals from plates of tourist instead of throw it away to the garbage. My friends are still there, I left them for cats 4 cans of meat from 3Mmarket. Animals deserved being looked after, it is inhuman treatment. If you help them it improve your largeness in eyes of animal lovers and they come again.
All people having heart are feeding them. Thank you very much for your understanding. Marian Paciga

Hi everyone, all the reviews you read are quite true!
Having read these negative reviews ourselves prior to going we did not believe it for a minute there would be cockroaches in the bed and room! [the only reason it recieves a poor rating] but this was true!
putting this aside the Equator village is unique and enables you to experience the maldives as we believe many would want to, you can jump on a bicycle and adventure to the neighbouring islands of Feydhoo, Maradhoo, Hithadhoo meet the maldivians whom live here with their families and they are so pleased to stop and chat with you - their english is excellent.
The exploring you can do is quite endless you also have the retired RAF base Gan to mooch about in and included also in your package are two free snorkel trips one at 10am and the other at 14:00 a different part of the atoll on each trip [total of about 4-6 sites] the snorkeling is quite magnificent as the coral is largely untouched down here in the south.
The restaurant offers a sensible range of foods we certainly had no complaints our waiter Abdul was only too attentive nothing was too much trouble.
Equator village is a very unique restful place to stay the chickens and well mannered cats that live here free to roam alone make it special.
The only negative we would emphasise on is the cockroach problem that we did address with the management and they did apologise and did their very best to resolve, we were more dissapointed with Cosmos as upon telephoning them to report the issues we had encountered they demanded a cancellation fee should we want to move to another island! so, sorry Cosmos nil points for customer service!
We are sure to return to Gan at some point in the future but not with Cosmos we feel.
Thank you to all whom we met and dealt with during our first three days of cockroach awakening!

As always please feel free to email us if any of you have any questions regarding the Equator Village.

we travelled as a couple on 06.02.12 and stayed for two weeks
we did not expect very much after reading the reviews based on 3* rating

unfortunately it was worse than anticipated, the housekeeping was particularly poor
and below considered acceptable ( cockroaches in the bed, dead flies and ants left
on the floors after housekeeping had been, surfaces not wiped down, coffee facilities
not replaced)

the male staff were very helpful and tried their best (they didn't do housekeeping)

the diving was good and the snorkelling trips were good

food and driink basic

Room Tip: rooms away from the reception and preferably in the middle of the complex we stayed in 139

Just back from gan had a fantastic time after reading some reviews I just wonder what people want
We can only say good things about Equator Village clean rooms good food all the staf we met were lovely
We took the bikes out most days (not the best bikes I've been on but were more than okay)
Hired a motorbike locally & drove to the very top of the island all the locals said hello
Diving a bit expensive but still wonderful mantas everywhere actually now I am reviewing this I think I am going to book for the same 3 weeks as this year
So go with an open mind and enjoy the experience
