“Great place in Ecuador!”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

This was a beautiful surprise for me in Ecuador! The hotel is on the top of a mountain and surrounded by forests and other mountains. The views are so beautiful and there are hundreds of hummingbirds around every day. Every night we can see the olinguito that comes for food (sometimes more than one). The rooms are really beautiful, and although we are in the middle of a forest, they provide hot water. The food is delicious! If you want to relax and to have contact with the nature, that is a great option. If you want more adventure, you can stay at Bellavista and also go for Mindo (a small town nearby) for white water rafting, zip lining, canopy tours, etc Staff is really helpful and friendly!

We had four nights at Bellavista, mainly so my husband could bird watch, but it is a fabulous place to stay for non birders as well. Our room was in the red brick house, which was very comfortable and spacious with even an attic room above, which would be ideal for a family ( slept a total of 6 ). Nelson, our guide was just fabulous and we took advantage of 2 day trips as well, which turned out to be great fun. The Hummingbirds and the two olinguitos are the stars of the Lodge. Please go on the Mindo Valley trip - the chocolate factory tour was a highlight, with lots of lovely tastings, and the full day out birding was wonderful, even for a non birder like me. The early start to see the Cock of the Rock & our local farm breakfast was fabulous. These trips do cost extra but just so worthwhile. The food and service at Bellavista was outstanding and it is just such a credit to Richard, whose dream has turned into a reality to provide so much pleasure and the perfect retreat to weary travelers & twitchers alike.

I traveled to Bellavista for a college trip with about 16 other students. It was one of the highlights of my trip. The people are so incredibly nice and accommodating. They always have smiles on their faces and do whatever they can to make your stay enjoyable. It was a lovely break from the hustle of Quito. We stayed for about 4 days and I wish it could have been triple that. The trails are breath-taking, the wildlife is unreal and the guides help you to best understand the natural beauty. I am also vegetarian and was worried about food accommodations but it was to die for. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Not to mention the food was a wonderful variety. I can't say enough good about this place and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who loves nature because at Bellavista, you see it at it's finest.

Room Tip: If you are looking for a more quite setting I don't recommend the Dome. They are beautiful rooms...

We were pleased with the accommodations, activities and hospitality of the lodge. Our room included a small living/kitchenette area, a separate bedroom and a small bathroom. The room overlooked the cloud forest -- much like staying in a tree house -- with an amazing view of the tree canopy right below. My son’s room was less spacious; an open concept for 3-people with a double and a single bed and a small sitting area and separate bathroom. The view of birds from their balcony was like watching a nature documentary! There seemed to be many different room configurations so perhaps confirm this on booking. It did become cool in the evening and we turned on the small heater which took out the dampness from the room and used extra blankets on the bed which kept us snug throughout the night. The meals served throughout our stay were simple but plentiful. We opted to have a driver pick us up at our hotel in Quito and bring us to the lodge. He applied suitable caution for road conditions and happily our drive was uneventful.

The hummingbirds at the many feeders placed around the lodge are simply amazing. I have never seen anything like this. There were several gorgeous sunny breaks both mornings we were there which allowed the hummingbirds iridescent colours to really stand out –incredible photo opportunities.

Much of the success of the overall trip depended on our Naturalist Guide, Nelson, who was truly outstanding. Nelson expertly led each of our hiking excursions and we really appreciated his patience, enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the many birds and plants we saw. Nelson was able to find and immediately identify so many birds, insects, orchids and other plants. The cloud forest is wet and muddy as it rains almost daily, with frequent rain showers in the afternoon. One of the pathways in particular was quite steep and slippery in places. The grueling 3-hour hike to a beautiful waterfall and back was well worth the trouble, but thank goodness for the rubber boots provided, however, several in our group did slip and fall along the trail at one point or another. You’ll want to consider how fit you are if you’re taking part in that hike. There are plenty of easier hikes, the other two we took we much easier to navigate. All were fantastic - birds and fauna galore every step.

After dusk the newest discovered mammal species in the world, the olinguito, dropped by for a visit. A member of the raccoon family, the olinguito has a very long tail used to help navigate vines and trees. A male and a female came to drink from the leftover hummingbird feeders and entertained us with their acrobatic efforts.

We were picked up from the hustle and bustle of Quito and taken to the quiet beauty of Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve. We had one night and 2 days there in which we had breath taking walks, numerous Toucan sightings, a power cut, a magical encounter with 2 olinguitos, a brilliant guide and total tranquillity. David took us out into the jungle and revealed its secrets with enthusiasm and humour, the bird life is phenomenal. The weather is ever changing- be prepared for cloud, rain, sun, humidity and mud. We were lucky enough to have the bio dome to ourselves with a room made of bamboo and a balcony view to die for.. many memories and photos! and then of course there were the Humming Birds...

Room Tip: Rooms at top of bio dome have best views but require good climbing skills as access is by a vertical...

This is the place to see plenty of the wildlife of Ecuador. The big plus is the quality and enthusiasm of the guides! The rooms are not the most comfortable and the meals are adequate. There are plenty of trails for exploring with or without a guide and they are well graded for difficulty.

Bellavista lodge is in a fantastic location with wildlife everywhere and of course their pièce de résistance - the humming birds which are ubiquitous across the property. This is a fantastic property for bird watchers.

The rooms and lodge reminded me of school camps, but are clean. That bathrooms however, are very small. The food was plentiful and standard and the staff were more than accommodating to those with allergies.

The guides, were knowledgable, and friendly, and were able to pick up the guests interests and show them flora or fauna they were interested in, or to just point out things of interest. That said, some of the staff were more than willing to throw rocks at animals to ensure guests could get the best pictures. I found this VERY unacceptable behaviour.

Two things let me down about this hotel. Firstly, watching a staff member throw rocks at a possum repeatedly. His reason for doing so? So guests could see and take a photo of the rare mammal they had on site. This horrified myself and my guest as we thought as a lodge promoting being eco friendly this went against this ethos.

Secondly on the morning of our departure, we were due to take a difficult walk lead and organised by the guide as part of the standard activities that would take approximately 3 hours. Fantastic we thought. As everyone did not leave until 3pm we presumed we could have our room until then and we could shower after the hike.

Just as we were about to leave on this walk we were advised VERY rudely by a member of staff that we needed to vacate our rooms immediately for other guests who were arriving that day. This may not have been a problem had it not meant we missed the walk to do this. (no other guests were told to vacate their rooms, and they were all to leave at 3pm with us). By vacating our room early, had we made the walk, we would not have been allowed to shower, before we departed on our next location as we no longer had access to a room. For a normal standard hotel I would not have an issue, but as you cannot leave until 3pm (and this is standard) a check out time at 10am appears a little … weird. This could have been handled better, but the staff lacked the social etiquette to talk to customers.

One thing that stood out in our minds was, after being told to leave our rooms, we then needed to take our heavy suitcases down a spiral staircase. It was at this point, my friend said he hopped he had good travel insurance and the hospital was not too far away, as this was not something staff or guests could do safely without a fear of falling. We were advised our luggage would be kept in the staff office, however, this was not the case, and we were lucky it did not rain.

The whole situation of asking us to leave our rooms was very badly handled and after watching staff throw rocks at animals it left a very negative feeling about this lodge.

After missing the walk, and being “stuck” in the cloud forest, and now having to cart around our laptops, and other electricals we decided to call it a day. We could now only take unguided short walks with our valuables - for the price we paid, not something we wanted to do. The whole point was to be able to take guided walks so flora and fauna could be pointed out.

We had been at the lodge less than 15 hours and had enough. If we were to do this again, we would stay at many of the other lodges in the area all great for bird watching and hiking. The rudeness of the staff and the throwing of rocks at animals, put a very negative opinion of the lodge, and I would not recommend this location for this reason.
