“A thoroughly enjoyable weekend stay”
Reviewed 29 July 2012

Have just returned from a weekend stay at Hackness Grange and have to complement all the staff there for being so friendly and attentive from the moment we arrived. We were served with a delecious afternoon cream tea and an excellent evening meal. Our room was spotlessly clean as was the en-suite bathroom, and the view from our windows of the beautiful grounds was outstanding. We were served with a full English breakfast before leaving which was hot, freshly prepared and probably the best we've tasted in any hotel.
Our first visit to Hackness Grange will certainly not be our last and we are looking forward to a return visit in the not too distant future. Can imagine it will be just as idyllic in the autumn and winter too.

We returned to Hackness Grange about thee years after our previous visit. We were a little bit concerned as we had read that the hotel had been in administration. We need not have worried, the food staff and service offered by the hotel was excellent. We met the new owner who seems a very genuine person and does not want to increase the prices unnessecarily but at the same time improve the hotel . The chief waitress Joe was excellent and friendly as she was on our previous visit. Ollie the waiter was also polite and efficient. The food as always was excellent,it is nice to have a freshly prepared hot full English breakfast. We will be recommrnding Hackness Grange to our friends without hesitation.

We stayed at the Hackness Grange Hotel as part of a deal which included; 2 nights stay with breakfast and afternoon tea and dinner on the first night. The location is really beautiful and we were pleasantly surprised at just how nice the hotel and grounds were for the price we paid. We stayed in our garden room (separate from the main building) which although some have commented are smaller rooms, they were more private and had their own outside seating area. The food was nice but I personally wouldn't have paid full price £30 (dinner) and £15 (breakfast) per head. There is also no phone signal and the free wireless was down whilst we were there - but it was quite nice to have a break from the hustle and bustle. There is a small bar in the hotel but as you would expect this is quite pricey and there are no other bars/pubs/restaurants within walking distance so a car is a must. Overall, the hotel staff were very friendly and polite.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden room (34) to get a good view and a bit of privacy!

We arrived on a lovely sunny afternoon for a one night stay. The grounds are really lovely with it's own lake. We made friends with the ducks who all waddled over to see us and a friendly rabbit which seems to have found a home there also. This is a really lovely place although the hotel does need some work on it, in parts. The bar, lounge and dinning rooms are lovely.
We were taking advantage of a free night curtisy of our house insurance renewal, so were given one of the rooms in courtyard, a separate building in the grounds. The first room we were given was a bit musty and the sheets were clean but looked stained. We complained and were given a new room, still in the courtyard, but much better. The bed was very comfortable and the room lovely and clean.
We ate in the restaurant and had a really nice meal - good food, staff attentive. The hotel had recently changed hands. it had been in administration for a while and the new owner has recently bought it. He spent his time talking with everyone in the lounge and was very keen to find out what they thought of the hotel. I got the feeling there was a real willingness improve and i would like to go back in a few months time and see just what has been done.
This would be a great place for a wedding or a conference or a romantic weekend. The hotel and grounds really are lovely - it just needs a bit of TLC to upgrade areas where it looks a bit tired and worn.

We've just returned from a one night stay at Hackness Grange with my parents for my Dad's 70th birthday. I bought the deal through Travelzoo (£99 for 2 people to include afternoon tea, 3 course meal, bed and breakfast). I then went on to read some reviews here on Tripadvisor and was beginning to wish I hadn't. Many described it as dated and tired. A little apprehensive, we set off for our weekend break.

For those of you who have read the same reviews and had the same concerns, PLEASE IGNORE THEM! Hackness Grange is a manor house which dates back to 1822 and was built as a home for the brother of Lord Derwent and then later used as the Dowager house. It is a stunning building which retains its original charm and is sympathetically decorated. We were greeted by staff who proved to be very friendly and attentive. Our room was in the Courtyard which was part of the original hunting lodge. The room was very clean and comfortable. In the Courtyard are plenty of chairs and tables and we were fortunate enough to have sunny weather to take advantage of them. Dinner was served in a beautiful dining room where you were made welcome and service was spot on. The food was lovely with a good choice on the menu. Breakfast was great. We'll definitely be returning and already my parents are talking about recommending it to their friends.

The hotel has been recently bought and has new owners who intend to make improvements to this place. I hope it retains its comfortable, homely feel.

Room Tip: My parents room was a family room and had a double bed and bunk beds. the rooms overlook the courtya...

We were returning from a weekend in North Yorkshire and decided to call in on Hackness to see whether it was still open as on our last visit the hotel was close to going into administration. We pulled up in the car park and were delighted to see tables, chairs and sun umbrellas out on the terrace. The gardens and grounds looked cared for and the croquet lawn and mini golf course had been cut and looked splendid. We were surprised to met the new owners who had only signed the contract on the house the previous Thursday. They were full of ideas for restoring the beautiful house and grounds and improving the holiday experience of future guests It has been a favourite with our family for a number of years. The staff are always very welcoming and the food most enjoyable. The grounds provide opportunities for walking, golf and tennis as well as having a lovely lake with ducks and geese swimming around. It all sounds wonderful and we look forward to many more visits to this lovely house.

Room Tip: The rooms in the house are larger than the courtyard rooms.
