We were aware that the Hackness Grange Hotel had a few problems but now, with the new owners, they appear to be getting it absolutely right. My wife and I were looking for a place for us to celibrate my birthday and the new year and spotted an ad for the hotel in a local newspaper. We had a trip out to look it over and then booked two nights and including New Year. Yes, the rooms are a litle dated but this is a beautiful georgian property in great surroundings and the dining facilities are superb. We had a great time, with good company and it was exceptional value for such quality. The staff were brilliant and joined in the festivities and service was excellent. I would without hesitation recommend this place and will definitely use it as a restful bolt hole in future. Well done.

Room Tip: For comfort choose a room inside the hotel however, the outside rooms are good.

This was a lovely peaceful break just before Christmas. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. The room was comfortable and clean. The bar area was gorgeous - open fire and lovely and Christmassy with the tree etc. Special mention must go to Chris - the barman. He was very helpful and tried to accommodate in all our requests. The food must be praised too. Absolutely beautiful. Presentation was 5 star and the service was excellent.
We would do a return visit without hesitation.

Just returned from a enjoyable Christmas break at Hackness Grange. The hotel is a imposing old building built in the early 1800s and is in Hackness village, which is approx 6 miles from Scarborough

As previous reviews have stated it is under new management and they have plans to refurbish the Grange. The swimming pool is closed and I understand it is going to be removed completely and that area turned into a function room.

The room we had was the Dale Suite which is right at the top of the hotel. Two nice bedrooms, large bed, possibly king size, in one room and two singles in the other. The sitting room was quite small with a small TV. Decoratively faded but the room was clean and comfortable with nice views from the bedrooms. Owing to the narrow stairs I wouldn't recommended that particular room for anybody with walking difficulties.

Although we had been told that WIFI was only available in the public rooms we were pleasantly surprised to find a decent signal in the room.

The bar area had a nice log fire and if you had a chance to sit around it then it was lovely and cosy, but the other members of my party did mention that they were cold when sitting further away and in the dining room.

The staff could not have been better, they were friendly and accommodating and given they were working on a Christmas, very cheerful.

The food was very good, well presented and ample.

If you are looking for a quiet break with lovely countryside and within a reasonable distance of Scarborough then I would recommend this hotel as a base.

We bought a package for Xmas, starting Xmas Eve afternoon, where we were greeted with afternoon tea. Hotel very comfortable, warm and cosy, and beautifully decorated for Xmas.

We had a lovely meal in the evening which started in the bar with champagne and canapes, drinks a plenty in the bar afterwards too.
Xmas morning delicous English breakfast, then a walk through the grounds and opened gifts.
Xmas lunch very nice, retired to our rooms after drinks, met new friends later for a light supper and quiz in the bar and a few more drinks.
Nice breakfast Boxing Day morning before leaving.

Very good value for money package and hotel in the most beautiful setting, would recommend, staff very helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Stay in the Courtyard and take your pets with you

A previous reviewer has commented on the new owners being in the process of updating the Hotel. it has a touch of faded grandure about it but our room was clean and comfortable .My wife and I stayed here with friends for a mid week break in early December 2012 in the midst of a snow storm. Staff were wonderful, very friendly and couldnt do enough for us. Food excellent and staff went out of their way to meet our special dietary requirements. Beautiful setting. Hope to go back and stay when the weather is better.
