Have not stayed for a few years but decided to try it again.Lovely setting and grounds- super staff especially at breakfast. The food was excellent and it was great value for money. I hope they continue to do well under new ownership.

2 night stay on a travel zoo voucher. This hotel is as it says a country house hotel with large original draped curtain windows. No lift. All is very clean and staff pleasant. Breakfast and dinner was waiter served and very good. Asked for fruit at breakfast and it arrived. It is having the care put back into the inside and the garden. It is about 7 miles from Scarborough in a quiet peaceful setting with a lake. Rooms are available in the courtyard as well as the main house. We had room 4 and the view was lovely.

My partner and I stayed at the Hackness Grange Country House Hotel for two nights in early February. It was our second visit through the 'Travelzoo' website. It is now under new ownership/management and the improvements are clear for all to see. Yet I believe there is still more to be done, eg, the swimming pool will soon be a reception area or similar. We stayed in one of the renovated rooms in the annex - some 20 yards or so from the main building. Very comfortable and warm. All the staff are welcoming and could not have been more helpful. The food was excellent, especially the dinners and all in all a most enjoyable visit. We look forward to our next visit.

Many thanks for your review, I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us.

The swimming pool is indeed closed and we have submitted an application for planning permission to turn the area into a function suite. This would allow the hotel to host larger weddings, dinner dances, private functions, conferences and the likes. We believe that with our setting, coupled with the experienced team offering great service and food, that we will become a destination of choice for such functions, particularly weddings.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write and look forward to looking after you again soon.

Hackness Grange holds a special little place in our hearts but from being regular visitors some years back we stopped going because it seemed to be being run into the ground and standards slipped dramatically.

However seeing that it is now in new ownership we,two couples, decided to give it a try this weekend (23rd Feb) via The Talbot at Malton (James Martins place). It is beyond argument that it is a lovely building set in the beautifully stunning Forge Valley and really is a country house hotel.

We arrived late afternoon and headed straight for the bar area which has the ambience of a drawing room with the intention of settling down with nibbles and a couple of pints, however we were a little perturbed to see people sitting in outside coats and we realised it was a little chilly we adjourned to another sitting room where we sat for an hour or so until the girls went to then room because they were cold. The bedrooms we had 11 and 12 were spacious clean nicely equipped and very warm, they too have the feel of an old country retreat. We went down for dinner and again when sat in the bar area it was cold.

the food at dinner was imaginative, well cooked and presented, whilst also being served politely and efficiently, such a shame then that the main talking point was how cold it was in the gorgeous dinning room. My wife sat in my jacket and the other lady had a shawl on all night. Upon adjourning to the bar area for post dinner drinks we were absolutely perished however being a hardy lot we ploughed on and it is surprising how comforting a nice malt can be. I am unaware of why it was like this as all the radiators were on but it really did take the edge off what would have been a very nice stay indeed. So much so that we were intending to stay Sunday night and changed our minds.

Has Hackness Grange won us back round again I think it has and we will certainly persevere hoping the temperature is a one off. If you are selling a winter retreat away from cold wet days outside, the place has to be comfortable and warm inside, the building does most of the work but it has to be helped along.

I would like to make a comparison to The Talbot, That hotel is absolutely beautiful brand new and tastefully decorated and furnished. However the amount of money it must have cost I can only imagine at. Hackness Grange is most definitely not the Talbot, but if it ever has that amount of money invested in it I would imagine it could be outstanding. As it is it is a very good value for money hotel in a wonderful location and it only cost us £89 for dinner bed and breakfast, not £200. Would I recommend Hackness Grange, yes. But I take no responsibility for the temperature.

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. I am very pleased to hear that over-all you enjoyed your stay with us, with the only complaint being the heating. As you quite rightly pointed out, the heating / radiators were on, but being an old Georgian House, it is a battle to keep the hotel warm, particularly in the large public rooms such as the bar and restaurant. We do try our best with having open fires lit in both of these rooms as well as the central heating being on.
We are looking at updating the full heating system for the hotel though I have been advised to do this during the warmer months and this I hope will rectify the situation for the future. That said, I have purchased additional portable radiators for the rooms and guests can ask reception for more heaters should they need them.
Once again thanks for your comments and I look forward to seeing you at the hotel again soon.

Just arrived home from a 2 night stay. The hotel is under new management and definitely offers great value for money. The food, friendliness of staff, and cleanliness were all excellent 10/10. The owner is more than happy to meet his guests and welcome them to this fabulous property. Well done to the team at Hackness, keep up the good work. A 5 star stay, looking forward to returning. The hotel is also dog friendly which is always a plus for animal lovers.

A beautiful hotel in a magnificent setting...............

A really lovely weekend. This is a fantastic location and a really lovely countey house. Food is superb and all of the staff want to make your stay a happy one at all times. I think this hotel changed hands in the summer and i wish the new owners the best of luck.

Just back from 2 nights at Hackness Grange. We booked at 10am for arrival that night and inclusion of a dog in our party meant we were quartered in the annex rather than the main house. However, that is not a problem and someone had placed an extra radiator in the room to boost the central heating and air the room a little more before we arrived.

The staff were excellent and so was the food. Breakfast was enjoyable but the dinner each night was particularly good.

Hackness Grange does accept dogs (£10/night) in the annex rooms but they cannot join you in the bar as this is in the main house. Perhaps this is a mistake as we would doubtless have spent rather more had that been allowed. The grounds though are ideal; you can imprison fido in the car (ample car park) whilst you have dinner then stroll them around the garden or along the river bank .

Further blessings are that:
a) there is no mobile phone signal (hurrah!) but
b) there is free wifi in the main house.
Perfect.
