Whist this hotel is 'work in progress' the continuous improvements do not affect your stay. Roger, the owner, is charming and is clearly very concerned that each individual guest enjoys their time at his hotel. He is prepared to spend time getting to know his guests and this certainly wouldn't happen in any of the chains.
The hotel is in a beautiful setting and has an air of 'country house weekend'. the staff are helpful and welcoming. A country location within a short drive of the sea and the North Yorkshire moors.
The excellent breakfasts are freshly cooked to order and are served to your table in the very pleasant dining room which has large windows overlooking the grounds and one side the lake. At dinner there was a good choice which catered all tastes and was good value for money with imaginative vegetarian options. The young man who waited on at dinner was first rate and nothing was too much trouble.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room or it is worth the extra money to stay in the main house for the convenie...

We have just spent 3 nights here. This is our third visit; the first visit since Roger became the new owner. We are aware of the improvements, which are obvious and we are looking forward to seeing the future plans come to fruition. We think the hotel is in the lovliest setting and this time we stayed in a garden cottage, which we both preferred, being able to walk out of the double doors and enjoy the wonderful views and fresh air. Everyone is very friendly here and it was lovely speaking with Roger and his wife, who are enthusiastic about this venture.
We will be returning, I know. It really is wonderful place to stay. I may be biased, as I was brought up in this area and went to Hackness School, but I know you will fall in love with it too.
Nearly forgot to say, the food is good

We have visited Hackness over the past 19 years and have always enjoyed our visits. Excellent food and accommodation in a stunning location, and have been fortunate to meet the new owners, and see they have made fantastic improvements to the hotel and grounds. We look forward to going again in the autumn when we know we will get a warm welcome from all the staff.

We last stayed at the hotel in March aware that the new owners were in the process of upgrading the facilities. Turning into the drive there was clear evidence that in the garden improvements had been made and how nice it is that visitors now get a clear view of this lovely property. This time we chose a room in the main which, whilst this had yet to be refurbished, it was a significant improvement on the courtyard room we had previously.
We are conscious that it is still work in progress but I have admit that little things niggled and we were left with the impression that , at times, the purse strings rather than guest requirements hold sway. For example, the loo seat (presumably inherited from the previous owners) was poor quality with sharp edges and did not fit properly; it is not necessary to wait until the room is redecorated to sort that out. In the morning and during the day there is a general air of gloom in the reception area and corridors. Lights that should brighten these areas are left off, indeed in some there are bulbs missing. Just a small point but it would do so much to enhance the character of the place
As on our previous visit, dinner is much improved. I had a very good Thai green curry. But out of a choice of just 4 main courses, my wife's sirloin steak - at an £8.95 supplement- came garnished with just a half of a tomato and a single mushroom. Breakfast was also lacking; there was a limited choice of cereals, fruit juices, grapefruit prunes, and plain yoghurt, we would have expected a wider choice including croissants, cold meats/cheeses and a better standard of preserves than those offered. The cooked breakfast included good quality bacon but the sausage, a chipolata, was poor. We have stayed at other hotels in the area and, in this respect, the competitors have the edge.
Staff are friendly and helpful and I am conscious that my comments might appear nitpicking. In such a lovely setting the hotel deserves to succeed but I feel that there are details that need to be attended to, sooner rather than later, if the owners are going to realise its potential.

I really question if the person actually stayed . The so called guest hadn't the decency to put a name to his comments. My husband and I knew the hotel before the new owner took over only one year ago. We were guests at his first wedding function as the new owner it was a perfect day. The wedding breakfast was excellent ,the staff and owner very attentive and professional. Since then my husband and I have visited the hotel a number of times for lunch and never once have we found need to complain and if we had we would have complained there and then to the staff. Not after the event failing to give them chance to correct the problem. The owner is a is a person not seen in most hotels. This gentleman is friendly and welcoming and only engages in conversation about his vision if you asked. Roger is far from a wind bag, we are pleased that someone with such enthusiasm should want to take on such a beautiful hotel . John and Pat

My wife and I have just returned from a lovely stay at Hackness Grange it is in wonderful surroundings and very peaceful . The food and service was excellent our room was great but the hotel is undergoing a refurbishment under the new very friendly owner Roger. It is very well placed for visits to Scarborough and Whitby The staff were great bringing drinks etc to the patio while we enjoyed the view and watched the ducks by the lake. A very nice and quiet place to relax.

Room Tip: check with hotel due refurbishment in some rooms
