“Beautiful Country House Hotel”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

Just returned home from two lovely days at the Hackness Grange Hotel. We booked at very short notice via Travelzoo and really did get a very good price.
The hotel is quite old and absolutely full of character. Our large bedroom overlooked the small lake at the front of the hotel (Room 4) and was very comfortable. The bathroom was not too small and had a very good space for toiletries. Plenty of hot water.
We had dinner in the hotel on the second night and the dining room was absolutely beautiful each table had a different coloured candle holder all the candles were lit. There was a huge roaring log fire to add to the atmosphere. It was rather special.
All the staff were very helpful and constantly sought to please.
The grounds of the hotel are very beautiful and well kept.
The journey into Scarborough is through beautiful countryside until you get to the main road with a straight run into Scarborough.
If you enjoy walking the cliff top walk from Scarborough to Filey is not too strenuous about 10miles of lovely scenery.
Well worth a visit.
Liz and Ian. Lancashire.

Last moment booking - no problems. Lovely friendly greeting on arrival/ including open fires and pink champagne. Warm, happy environment with Owner, Roger chatting with visitors in Bar area before being taken through to the Restaurant .
The food was first class in this lovely dining room with open fires - We chose duck and scallops starters with superb steak main courses / too full to enjoy desserts but really worth recommending to family & friends.Lovely complimentary champagne sorbets mid dishes. Wine menu extensive and offered choice for a variety of tastes and budget. Two exemplary staff looking after us were Alex & Sean (Shaun)? Excellent. Will certainly return. Thank you.

Room Tip: Room 3 & 7 have lovely views!

Have just spent 2 nights at the Hackness Grange and the hotel is a real gem. It was very quiet on this occasion (we have stayed before) but this really suited us. It felt as if we were guests in a private country house and despite being only one of two couples the staff and service was brilliant whereas I can imagine that with so few guests the staff could have cut corners and left us to our own devices. Even before arriving Sean organised our booking and as I was on crutches following surgery he went out of his way to ensure the room we had was suitable. Even the new Romanian waiter/bar man who spoke very little English was incredibly courteous and polite and tried very hard to please.

The hotel is in need of some updating in terms of decoration but we understand this is in hand. However, I hope the charm and character of the place is maintained as its definitely got a lot of style which just needs a loving touch rather than a dramatic make over. There is a new Events suite currently being constructed and I understand this is likely to be used extensively for weddings, its certainly a great setting, I just hope that they won't take over the hotel every weekend !

Food was good and again, given we were the only people dining on Saturday night it could have been a disaster. Desserts were especially good, breakfast was hearty and well cooked, especially the poached eggs !

We had a great room in the main house which was at the top of the stairs and next to the fire door which I imagine could have been a little noisy in busy times but not an issue for us on this occasion (room 3), we had a king size bed and it was extremely comfy.

Hot and cold water took a long time to reach their required temperature but this is an old house and I think some of the plumbing is currently being upgraded.

Overall a lovely relaxing break away in a great location following a difficult year and our thanks to the staff - we will be staying again, soon !

If you are looking for a different hotel with added charm then this is the place. There is an Olde Worlde feel about the place which has charm, but the staff and service is modern and excellent. The situation is in the rural part of Noth Yorkshire within easy distance of the East Coast Scarborouh Filey and Whitby. There are also some great walks in the area. The food is great and the choice is different. Well worth a visit.

I had a 2 night stay recently. The food was excellent and the room was really comfortable, with thick curtains that kept out the light so that I slept well. The hotel is ideally located for walking in the N Yorks national park, or for visiting the coast at Scarborough or Whitby. There is a lake on the property and someone staying there saw kingfishers - I made do with an owl! Above all, the staff were really helpful and nothing was too much trouble - highly recommended.

Part of a Christmas present from our daughters. We had such a lovely relaxing time. A very beautiful building in a beautiful location. We had room 6 which was very comfortable with a view of a very pretty lake. The staff were very helpful in every way. The food was excellent. We intend to go back again in the summer and do some walking as the countryside is stunning.
