The hotel was easy to find and in a nice location, a short drive (15 mins) from the centre of Winchester. We received a warm welcome but couldn't check in as we'd arrived a little earlier than the advertised time. Not to worry - we had plenty of exploring to do!

Our room was on the first floor and the view wasn't brilliant as the bedroom window looked out onto an assortment of roof tiles and drain pipes. The bathroom was very spacious and you had a choice of 2 different shower heads!! The room was a bit stuffy which was down to it being directly above the kitchen. This led to a rather poor night's sleep as it was simply too hot. We couldn't fault the cleanliness of the room or the hotel and everything we needed was there....even hot chocolate on the hospitality tray!

We ate in the restaurant which was incredibly busy and there was a lively buzz about the place. I would recommend that you book in advance as it was very busy for a midweek evening. The food was very nice but it did take a while to arrive. There was a very limited choice of bar snacks which was a shame as I think this would enhance the offering at the hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 6 - Cooper which is above the kitchen. The room was incredibly hot and even openin...

I don’t normally write that many reviews on tripadviser, but I would like to say that I highly recommend The Kings Head.
Very friendly atmosphere and excellent food. My in laws stayed last week and the room décor was lovely and they said they had a very pleasant stay and was looked after.

My sister and I thought we would try The Kings Head we usually go to The Dolphin down the road if we are in the area. This was a big mistake whilst I will say that the food was tasty it certainly was nothing special. The portions are not very generous so don't go to hungry. My sister had the duck with noodles which she did enjoy but there was hardly any sauce which the duck certainly needed. Her desert was a slice of lemon type cake which she did say was very nice. I had a chicken and ham pie which was the size of your usual pork pie this was very tasty the pie sat on a spoonful of spring green which still had the stalks attached which as the greens were hardly cooked they were inedible there was also about a table spoon of mash which all I can say is that it was not lumpy. My dessert was a toffee apple sponge with a sauce and ice-cream the sponge was very light and the taste was fine.
What really put us of was the total disorganization there were far to many waiters for the amount of tables they seem to be all over the place not one waiter per table. There was one man in particular who was a lot older he was way over the top pestering dinners we know its good manners to check the your diners food is ok but he was like a fly at a picnic you could not get rid of him. The couple next to us were getting really feed up with him pestering them. The Kings Head is certainly a place that you could not spend time over a leisurely meal with friends you felt you should have your meal and go. So to sum up food is slightly better than ok.Prices high end for pub food for the amount you have on your plate. Relaxing certainly not.

Food, ambiance, decor and service all top rate. We have recently moved to the area and wanted to check out some good places to eat.
As the Kings Head looks like a nice place from the outside, we thought we would first test the water by just arriving to have a drink ( and to "case the joint" ). First impressions very good, and a glimpse of the food served sealed the deal for us.
The one and only small problem we do have is the seating in the bar area. Most regulars seem to like to stand at the bar, but for those of us that would just like to have a drink and a cosy table for two, we do find that a little difficult. Bar seating seems to be aimed at larger groups and is quite uncomfortable and cramped in areas.
However, on the flip side, the restaurant area is fabulous and fault free.

This is an old establishment so expect moving floorboards and dim lighting. We were seated in what appeared to be a the corridor in the dining room so traffic was heavy. I ordered Chicken starter as I live wild mushrooms but got venison, which to be fair was nice so I didn't complain. Salad needed dressing though. My main duck course was totally overcooked and dry. Real shame as spicy noodles were well balanced. My wife's desert jelly was flavourless, and the cheese board wasn't a hit either. Not a bad meal by any circumstances, but not the standard I'd expect at inflated prices like that. What roun it for me was the clientele. Mutton drenched in perfume that totally ruined any subtle food flavours. At one point, my duck tasted of cheap rosé perfume which can not be blamed on Kings...

We were made to feel very welcome and were given a delightful and comfortable room. The highlight, though, was the evening meal. The dining room was very busy and the staff worked so hard to make sure everyone was happy. We certainly were. The food was out of this world! One of those meals where each mouthful has about 17 different tastes. Breakfast was excellent too. Now we have to think of a reason to go back and, even if it involves a diversion, we'll be there. Thanks to all at the King's Head. You've got it absolutely right.

We spent three nights here in two separate stays in Match / April. Staff were lovely, helpful and friendly, bedroom and bathroom both very clean and comfortable. Evening food very nice indeed, I knocked off one star because the full English breakfast we had on our third morning seemed to be a bit old and rubbery (at 8.30). Previous morning breakfasts were good (but we didn't have the full English). Definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Room one (Du Blois) is huge.
