“Enjoyable lunch!”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

Enjoyable lunch, the food was very good and the staff were very attentive especially the manager . The restaurant and the pub were very busy with families and couples alike but we didn't have to wait long for our food. The atmosphere was relaxed and the decor is modern.

We chose the Kings Head by chance as a place to meet friends roughly halfway between our homes. We had booked a room and were warmly welcomed by name on arrival. The bar and dining room are both tastefully decorated with a country-house feel, the food was excellent and the staff were friendly. This is the first time I have ever been motivated to write an on-line review. Highly Recommended.

The B&B makes an ideal choice for those on business jaunts to IBM, given that IBM Hurlsey entrance is only a few hundred meters away. The room I stayed in (Hoby) was nicely fitted out though exceedingly small. Probably fair to say that absolutely no space had been wasted. Given it wasn't overpriced, was warm and had a decent shower I was happy enough. Given the room was above a pub I was surprised there wasn't more noise. The restaurant was a bonus serving reasonably priced food of good quality overall, though my partridge was rather overdone, tricky blighters partridges. They have a couple of good real ales on too which is nice.

We visited on a Friday lunch-time to try the latest Hampshire Fare 2-course (or 3-course) menu. The dining areas were packed and we were told that Friday is their most popular day - one to avoid, perhaps. Spotting a delicious looking haddock mornay being served at one table, we both ordered that as a first course. "Sorry, everyone's been choosing that, so the haddock has been replaced by salmon." We agreed to the switch and ordered Hampshire trout fillet for the second course. When the starters arrived, we found that they were not salmon mornay (served hot and with the tasty-looking browned topping that we were expecting). It was just four small pieces of cold smoked salmon, some salad leaves and shaved parmisan. Very disappointing and, of course, not Hampshire Fare at all. We accepted the dish but did not enjoy it. The salmon did not have any interesting smokey taste, which the peat-smoked Waitrose salmon had for our home dinner the previous evening. And, being uncooked, there was no 'added value' from the chef, who had merely laid out the items on the plate, albeit quite attractively. Well, the second course somewhat made up for this. The Hampshire trout fillet was delightfully fresh, full of flavour and beautifully cooked in butter, with samphire and cress accompaniment. Next time we go, we will not choose a Friday and we will arrive well before 1pm so that all the items on the menu are still available.

Chosen because of its proximity to Winchester and ease of getting to Portsmouth, the King's Head delivered everything we'd hoped for. Situated in a nice rural spot with good sized car park, the pub more than lived up to its reputation for good food. We normally like to try various local resturants on holiday, but found ourselves gravitating back here because after the first visit we knew we could rely on the excellent food and service. Cheap it isn't but you get what you pay for. We paid a lot less at 'The Dolphin' down the road, for a satisfactory meal, but the King's Head definitely has the edge on setting and quality.
We stayed for 3 nights in a lovely spacious, spotless room with a good-sized bathroom. I was worried that a pub would be noisy at night, but last orders are at 11pm, and after that it all goes very quiet. Breakfast was delicious and cooked to order - no nasty congealing buffets here! All of the staff we met were friendly and obliging. Hursley has little in the way of amenities (one five-minute stroll around is enough!) but the bus to Winchester goes from directly opposite the King's Head, and is a brilliant way of visiting the city without worrying about parking.
No complaints at all - we would recommend the King's Head to anyone.

My wife and I went there for lunch, between her night shifts, and we had a fantastic lunch. Wonderful food and beautiful service. Can't wait to go back. Far better than ANY other pub in the area. Well worth a visit - staff make it worth while.

Classic pub/hotel with clean, comfortable rooms. I was assigned one of the larger rooms, with king bed, which was very comfortable, and large bathroom nicely updated with shower stall and claw foot tub. Free wireless was more than adequate. The windows are original single pane, so not sound insulated. Still, overall a pleasant experience. And then there's the convenience of a pub with outstanding beer and food.
The location is ideal for those who enjoy walking along country lanes, fields.

Room Tip: if you are a light sleeper and need to sleep in, request a room facing the back, away from the road.
