My husband and I have just returned from a holiday in Sri Lanka. Long car journeys meant that we wanted somewhere nice and relaxing to stay. Theva certainly provided us with that! We stayed there for two nights in a lovely room with a beautiful view. We had dinner and breakfast there on both days and the food was amazing - we certainly enjoyed every meal and missed the food as soon as we left! Wonderful service - we would certainly recommend this as a place to stay in Kandy.

This boutique hotel is located high in the mountains which offers spectacular views of the city and mountains. When I woke up one morning it was misty and it looked as if the hotel was floating in the clouds. Of course being so high in the mountains meant it was a 15 min tuk tuk ride away from the city centre (city centre is used quite loosely, it's more of a town and the busiest street isn't all that 'happening'). This isn't really an issue as the tuk tuk ride was approx. AU$4 one way.

I stayed in a standard room which was clean and decorated quite nicely with a charming wooden and stone theme. The room and bathroom were a decent size as well. Housekeeping make a conscieous effort not to disturb you and will clean when they notice you have left for the day or when dining downstairs. Nice touches included a turndown in the evening, slippers/robe, LCD tv, free wireless internet, complimetary bottles of water, games/dvds available. There are only around 10 rooms here so you feel like you have most of the place to yourself.

As i have discovered in Sri Lanka most places are very well, if not overly staffed, so the service here was just excellent. Staff are happy to assist with organising tours, transport etc. On one occasion i went on Safari and knew i would not make it back till very late, i called the front desk and advised them of this and they were happy to wait for me and kept the kitchen open till i got in which was 11PM! 5 staff members stayed back just so i could eat (yes i did feel somewhat guilty of this).

My highlight of this hotel however is the FOOD, it was truely magnificent. The had a varied menu which i can only say is very international. No dish i had was bad , everything was so good, and i would definatley recommened the Apple and rhubarb pie, srilankan breakfast, kandayan beef, but really you could eat anything and not be dissapointed. However, in terms of pricing, yes it was more expensive than your average Srilankan prices and this includes meals at 5 star hotels here, however i would have to say it was worth it. Especially when you see the other options in Kandy's city centre.

Overall the place was excellent and i would definately recommened it.

Theva Residency is located high up above Kandy on a twisting road but only 2 km from town. The views are stupendous - from the restaurant, pool, terraces and our room (a luxury suite). No balconies, sadly, but huge picture windows. The hotel is very modern in style and would be enhanced by more comfy places to sit (this was true in our room as well as outside). Surfaces were a bit hard and our room had a huge jacuzzi tub from which to enjoy the views but only one small settee aside from the (very comfortable) bed. The decor is mod and might not appeal to everyone but it is well done overall. Food was excellent - interesting reasonably priced menu for lunches and dinner (the Sri Lankan curry dinner at $20 was outstanding) and the wait staff was efficient and very friendly. They even have some interesting takes on fajitas, taco salad, and the like, along with more traditional dishes.

I wish we stayed here longer, as we were only booked for one night. After driving some time to kandy from Colombo and stopping along the way, we were pretty exhausted. Not to mention, it starting raining pretty hard on our way.
I was a little skeptical as we drove up the mountain circling to the top to get to the place. Not to mention that there is no real entryway. I was scared!
But then, we walked into the lobby. It was quaint yet modern, and there were floor to ceiling windows overlooking the town of Kandy from above. There was also a porch, with areas to read and just chill.
The staff, recognizing that we were exhausted, immediately jumped to help us with our bags and brought us hot tea and if wanted, a drink.
Our room was huge, with a comfy king size bed and very modern fixtures. We also had a jacuzzi on the porch, but unfortunately could not use it because of the rain.
Because of the terrible weather, we chose to just hang out and we were comfortable just reading, having a glass of wine and just chatting.
Dinner was at another level. The menu was full of exciting options and the wait staff was very professional. It was also gorgeously lit in the dining room, very romantic.
The food was incredible. I had the orange duck, my husband had a traditional Sri Lankan curry. Being from NYC, we were pleasantly surprised at how gourmet everything tasted and even begged the chef to move back to America with us! He said no :)
I highly recommend.
