“Great Views and Dinner!”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

The moment we arrive, we were immediately attended by the receptionist who showed us to our room. The views outside our room is amazing!
Room looks a bit quirky with HUGE bathroom! I mean huge! A great jacuzzi and the rain shower area is great. Simple and easy. But the toilet has this swinging door which we find it pretty irritating.
I wish I could unpluck the swinging door!
Wifi is atrocious, you can hardly get it moving even though you're hook on, it feels like back when you dial in for internet.
Dinner is fantastic! The owner makes it a point to cook for our group of 11. No menu but the course keeps coming. I was so full by the time she serve us grilled veal, but it was so good, I clean up my plate!
Similarly no electric flask for you to boil water (I think is just not Italian style to drink hot water often). If you dial for it, they do come but takes a while...
Breakfast only has plain yoghurt with some cereal but you can order any types of eggs from the kitchen.
Overall, food is good but we don't feel too comfortable with our room 111 and wifi has to improve!

Room Tip: Wifi is poor/doesn't work throughout all rooms.

Wonderful luxury inn with a fabulous restaurant. We were greeted with a glass of wine in the courtyard on a sunny afternoon. We had stayed here 20 years ago and not much at La Chiusa has changed except they have added more guest rooms.
We stayed in the "Terrace Suite" which had a sitting room and a lovely stone terrace overlooking the Tuscan countryside.
The dining experience was exceptional with fresh noodles being rolled right at your table! Daria is an excellent chef.
The one negative was that the in-room Wi-Fi was not working.
Definitely worth a visit and off the beaten path in Tuscany!

Excellent luxury inn in Tuscany with wonderful hosts. A great choice if you are staying in the area. The restaurant is especially good; the owners gave us a tour of the kitchen before our meal. A charming and very comfortable inn.

We found La Chiusa to be a very relaxing sanctuary tucked away in a beautiful corner of the Tuscan countryside. The hotel’s grounds and historic buildings are immaculately kept and the hilltop location offers spectacular panoramic views of southern Tuscany, the Val d'Orcia, Pienza and Montepulciano. Proprietors Umberto Lucherini and Dania Masotti (also the chef) are incredibly warm and gracious hosts. Luigi Vecchione, the concierge, is an especially helpful and sincerely friendly gentleman who greeted us each morning with a huge smile at breakfast and throughout the day. The fresh and abundant Tuscan breakfasts were absolutely wonderful too! Luigi offered excellent restaurant recommendations for truly memorable meals at Ristorante La Chiusa, and also at nearby Ristorante 13 Gobbi and Osteria La Botte Piena (both located inside the walls of the scenic medieval hilltop hamlet of Montefollonico). We can now highly recommend these restaurants too. Luigi also arranged private tours/tasting for us at several renowned Tuscan wine estates (Felsina in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Costanti in Montalcino and Il Poggione in Saint’Angelo in Colle). Luigi also mapped out our daily destinations for us, which we found to be extremely helpful when driving on Italian country roads (even with our GPS). We found La Chiusa’s location, a short 5-minute walk from the walls of Montefollonico, to be very convenient for our driving excursions to Sienna, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano. La Chiusa was an ideal base of operations for us and it was also a great place to just relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside, lifestyle and culture.

Our two room one bathroom suite, named “La Terrazza”, was spacious, comfortable, well-appointed and relatively secluded. The suite also had three large arched wood and glass double doors that opened up to our private terrace and front patio. The bathroom was huge with a large two-person soaking tub and separate two-person shower. Our suite and terrace also offered incredible views of the Tuscan countryside. The “La Terrazza” suite is EXACTLY what we were seeking in our Tuscan accommodations. It was a great value too. Our complete experience at La Chiusa from start to finish was wonderful and we highly recommend staying at this property. We will definitely return someday.

My wife and I attended a cooking school that was based at this hotel. It was a wonderful experience. The hotel is situated so that it overlooks the valley between Montfollinico and Montepulciano. The view is extraordinary. The staff was very hospitable, and Mondo the cat made us feel right at home. The food was excellent as well. In fact, the owner, Dania, is a most gracious host and wonderful cook and led one of our classes. One note of caution...some of the rooms do not have showers that you can stand in. Ours had a very deep tub which was difficult to get into and very slippery, and the shower was a hand held unit that was mounted at about my shoulder height when sitting in the tub. If you like showers, ask when you book to make sure your room has one you can stand in. Other than this, the hotel, the staff, the food and the location are absolutely perfect.

We love this place. Especially the restaurant and the hospitality.

But the rooms are getting a bit tired. In fact, very tired. Our first stay at La Chiusa was probably 15 years ago and it appears that they have not updated since. Our room was very large but with a thrift-store variety of furnishings. The jetted tub was big enough for two, but the blue color screamed the 80's. And the stone floors need to be polished - they are as gritty as the ones outside. Pretty funky for the price.

NOW, the restaurant... what a great dining experience whether it be lunch under the trees overlooking the most beautiful Tuscan valley or dinner inside the rustic dining room. Dania, the chef and owner, is a delight and the food was simply amazing. I had rabbit stuffed with fennel, and Bob had the duck. Both were out of this world. And, FIG ravioli!

The host, Umberto, was so funny and warm and very talkative. We laughed a lot. The waiter was very professional and accommodating.

A lovely breakfast is included in the room price. I am sure we will go back again!

A picture perfect Italian country inn. Very clean. Very nice. We stayed in room 104 and it had stairs in multiple directions. So unique. The staff was excellent and did everything possible to make our stay perfect. We would return to this property again and again.

Room Tip: Rooms to the back have a beautiful view of Montepulciano and the valley.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The pleasure of Tuscany Fifteen elegant rooms and a gourmet restaurant made out an ancient oil-mill: that is La Chiusa, a characteristic and intimate place to stay in Montefollonico, a countryside guest house immersed into the Sienna province hills. We are in Tuscany , between Pienza and Montepulciano, on the ridge which divides Val D'Orcia and Crete Senesi. In the early 70's we pioneered to dedicate our lives to host in this part of the Tuscan countryside. We attended, several years later, the opening of the very firsts local guests houses and the rising of the Tuscan holidays as a must. Unconsciousness, determination or just by chance? We do not know exactly what led us up here. Without any doubt a common and unconditioned passion for scents and aromas, for the tasteful extra virgin olive oil, for Sangiovese wines, salami and cheese of our Siennese land together with the devotion for the ancient culinary learning handed down from mother to daughter as the old land cultivation techniques passed on from father to son. But what mainly spurred us on stepping forward was the confidence that people would soon or later certainly get back to appreciate simplicity and what our definition of hospitality is. Almost forty years later we are proud to say that we were right. Hospitality at La Chiusa not only means to open our house's doors to the guests, but to share with them our passion through the knowledge of our country. ... more   less
