Huxtable Farm Bed & Breakfast
Reviewed 7 August 2013

We stayed in a family room which was well appointed and spotlessly clean. Jackie & Anthony the hosts were welcoming and attentive. The food was absolutely gorgeous and my petsonal favourite was Jackie's home made breads. 5 star service at 3 star prices ... The family loved it here.

Beautiful medieval farmhouse set in breathtaking woodland and countryside. The accommodation is wonderful and you feel like you live there you are so welcomed. Jackie and Anthony Payne are the perfect hosts, knowledgeable about what to see and do and friendly and helpful at all times. The walk around the farm's land is not to be missed and you will be accompanied by Lupin the sheepdog who is better than a map! There is also a lovely garden to sit in and have coffee. The breakfasts are amazing and include proper vegetarian options and Jackie's scrumptious home made jams. You will also meet the tame sheep including "Specsavers" the partially sighted lamb and have the chance to buy home made prooduce and products. Nothing was too much trouble for the Paynes from the Devon cream tea welcome to the local knowledge. Jackie's attention to detail is amazing and I loved the little touches like the vases of wild flowers in the rooms every day and the dozen farm laid eggs given to us when we left. You can bring your own wine and glasses are provided as are dvd players in the rooms and free wifi. We will definitely be back next time in North Devon. Ticked all the boxes. Blissful. Nick & Di Perry

Room Tip: Choice of rooms in the farmhouse or in the converted barn. Primrose room fab.

Five of us stayed here at the end of April for three nights to celebrate my Uncles 80th birthday. Huxtable Farm is a beautiful small holding set in a pretty, peaceful location. Jackie and Anthony were lovely hosts and made you feel very at home-nothing was too much trouble-we were able to decorate the breakfast room and Jackie gave us plates and forks for us to have the birthday cake in our room. We were also made very welcome by their beautiful dog Lupin who was willing to show us around ! On arrival we were greeted with a delicious cream tea with homemade scones and homemade strawberry jam which was enjoyed in the comfort of the lounge along with a roaring wood burner .. The farmhouse has many old features and is full of character. We stayed in the converted barn just opposite the farmhouse which we found perfect for us as our two rooms were right opposite so we could chit chat outside and go between the two rooms easily. Breakfast was another fabulous treat infront of another roaring wood burner with fresh eggs from their hens, local sausages and bacon and homemade bread and jams..and a delicious Prune, apricot and sultana compote-we certainly didnt need to eat again until the evening! We found 2 wonderful pubs for dinner The Grove Inn and The Exeter Inn - again lovely hosts and excellent food with generous portions!- we ate twice at The Exeter Inn we enjoyed it so much! The only negative I would say is that you do need to drive to find somewhere to eat..so you'd need a designated driver ! My sister and I shared it!
We were able to freely wonder around the farm and saw the chickens and their sheep along with the recently born baby lambs - my sister even went and fed the lambs with Jackie early one morning which she thoroughly enjoyed. We would definitely recommend Huxtable Farm and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again..Thankyou for letting us celebrate with you :)

Having stayed in many BnB's around the country over the years this is possibly the best yet. From the warm welcome with a home made cream tea, to the magnificent breakfast, to the cosy charm of the rooms & decor it all felt so right. Breakfast was like spring watch (didn't see Bill Oddie though) with live cam views of the baby Tawny Owls nesting in the wall of the house and the camera shots taken at night of the badgers on the estate. The frolicking lambs and the Buzzards circling overhead all combined to make this a very special stay. With the sun shining after weeks of grey & rain it accentuated the primroses & daffodils in the hedgerows making the spring feel so fresh and like a new start to the old tired year. We will be going back. Thank you.

What a wonderful place! Our stay here was excellent. The rooms were comfortable with extra thoughtful touches. The welcome was warm and we were served tea and scones on our arrival which was just what we needed. The breakfast was one of the best we have experienced. Lots of choice and all freshly cooked to order. The situation is stunning. Unfortunately we only stayed for one night but wished it could have been longer. Thank you so much.

. . .for five stars. There is really nothing not to like, or love, about Huxtable Farm and its owners. (Except sometimes the weather!) The farm complex is attractive and flowered. There are friendly dogs. The rooms are very well furnished (including bathrooms) but have kept a period feel; somebody has very good design sense! The welcome was warm, the cream tea delicious, and breakfast excellent. I'm only sorry that due to drizzle and a schedule, I didn't have the chance to take the "farm walk" which is marked and has an accompanying informational leaflet--it would have been so nice to have learned what I was seeing in the hedgerows, for example. I would highly recommend this place for a stay of any length.

Huxtable Farm rightly deserves the 5 star rating that most reviewers have given it.
It is surrounded by fields and woods on all sides and is accessible by a lane that leads only to the farm. This makes for a very tranquil setting, peace and relaxation is guaranteed. The surrounding woods and fields are ideal for delightful strolls; you can sit by the pond in the valley and and take in the great views whilst looking out for dragonflies which dart over the surface of the water. .
The Devon cream tea welcome is a very nice touch and sets the standard of care that was maintained throughout our three night stay The rooms are beautifully presented, with generous tea making facilities.
The breakfast was excellent with lots of locally produced fare.
Jackie and Antony were perfect hosts.
We will return.
