We decided to have Sunday lunch here whilst on holiday last July 2011 as it was only down the road from our cottage and it was written in the guest book as being quite a good restaurant.
The pub itself is very olde worldy and has a nice garden out the back with the added bonus of a bouncy castle for the children.

We booked for 12 noon as hubby and I hate crowds and being Sunday we wanted to get in early.

FOOD: The food was average, some bits nicer then others. We all had a Sunday carvery which was £8.95 per head. They do a children's carvery for £6.95 which our children had. The meat was not that well cooked, veg was undercooked and roast potatoes were overcooked. The homemade Yorkshire puddings were huge and really nice, the best bit of the meal. Hubby cooks a much better Sunday lunch though. The desserts were better.

SERVICE: The waitresses here were polite, but the problem we had was the place was nearly empty when we arrived and we were seated nearest the bar. The 2 waitresses decided to stand right behind us in front of the bar. It was too close for comfort as we felt they could hear everything we were saying. They must have realised this, but did not move almost the whole time we were there. On top of this they were quite young and spent most of the time chatting about their Saturday night and what they had got up to. It was like watching "The only way in Essex"...a programme I cannot abide!! We did not really want to eat Sunday lunch listening to their very giggly daft conversation. This was what really spoilt it. Staff may need training on how to behave in front of customers.

AMBIENCE: Did have quite a good feel, with large fireplace, wall lighting etc, but was spoilt by waitresses standing so close giggling.

CLEANLINESS: Everything looked nice and clean.

DECOR: It is a nice cosy place with dark beams and proper table linen on the tables. Pretty garden outside too.

PRICE: It cost us about £65 for 2 adults and 2 children for 4 carvery's and desserts plus soft drinks which would have been happy to pay if it had been better quality.

Overall pretty average for a family lunch or dinner, nice setting, but we have had better dining experiences and would probably not come back.

We've visited twice now and both times had a warm welcome and a lovely family lunch. The children had the Kid's Fish and Chips - very tasty and generous portions. I had the Steak and Ale Pie and I have to say it's best pie I think i have ever eaten. Gernerously portioned, freshly cooked and accompanied by delicious horseradish mash. My wife had the mushroom burger which she also enjoyed. Desserts were excellent too and the final bill was very reasonable. This is a home banker for future trips to North Devon.

Had a meal here with a large party. The staff coped pretty well with the orders and were very attentive.
Food portions were, if anything, over generous - it can be quite intimidating to be faced with a huge plateful, but it was well presented and enjoyable. The real ale served at the bar was particularly good.
