At first glance you might find that the external appearance of the Inn could put you off . It is worth bearing in mind that this is a 16th century Inn. The service and food is great try the steak pie it is just great and they cater for children with , once again, first rate food , we were a party of four adults and two young children. The service was good and swift , but we were told that it is wise to book.
The total bill came to £75 so very good value for money.

Dear John
Thank you for your kind review of your meals and service when you visited The Muddiford Inn. Excellent quality food is prepared by a fully qualified Chef, Nigel Powell, who takes pride in preparing and cooking fresh local produce. He is always delighted to hear how his guests have thoroughly enjoyed their meals and compliment him and his staff.
Yes, indeed the Inn is an early 16c Coaching Inn, its original name was The New Inn and is purported to be one of the original chains of new inns established by Queen Elizabeth I. The building is built of stone and neither easy nor desirable to change its outside appearance other than enhance it with flowers and shrubs on the patio and in the garden which is almost an acre with a babbling stream running down the side.
During World War II the New Inn was used as an Army Catering Corp base, the rooms being used for the Servicemen and women; and the Restaurant for their dining needs.
We thank you again and trust you return journey to Chester was pleasant and safe.
Kind regards
THE MUDDIFORD INN

Stopped here with our two young boys after reading the reviews on here. Well deserved high rating. Nice meals, friendly staff. Quiet at the time but still a nice atmosphere. Wouldn't hesitate to come again if in the area.

“Go out of your way to find the Muddiford Inn”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

Last week my wife and I were returning to Barnstaple having spent a pleasant couple of hours in Woolacombe. I spotted a sign for The Muddiford Inn. Having driven through Muddiford I thought I had missed it, not so, it is about a mile or so beyond Muddiford on the B3230.
Having got out of my car I must admit it was 'Love at first Sight' The paved garden in front of the 'Old Coaching Inn' is adorned by beautiful flowers, surrounding several tables all slightly different from each other. In side the pub is also full of character, I ordered a pint of Devon Honey Beer and a wine for my wife. We were eating early that evening so 'ONLY' ordered a sandwich each, local ham for myself and a prawn sandwich for my wife. Most pubs embellish there sandwiches with some salad and a few crisps. Not so at this Inn, yes there was some fresh salad, but also a basket of thick cut chips or nachos if you prefer.
The sandwiches were excellent and I still struggled to eat my evening meal.
The pub is run by the charming Pearl and her son Nigel who is also the chef. This is not just a pub not to miss but more relevantly one to go out of your way to find, you will not be disappointed. It is a gem.
Last but not least don't forget to ask Pearl to introduce you to Yogi the pub dog, also amazing.
Looking forward to revisiting the Muddiford Inn again in the future,
Dave and Moira Shelley
