I was very reluctant to write this review, I wanted to keep It all to myself but on entering I spotted a Tripadvisor award on the front door.

We were treated to this trip by my daughter and her husband to celebrate my wife's birthday.
Booked in to the restaurant Terra Madre for lunch at 1 o'clock on Saturday 21 April 2023. We arrived at 12:30 so we were invited to take drinks on the terrace, the sun was shining and the view down the valley was spectacular.

At one o'clock the menus were brought out to us, I could not believe the prices, I have paid more for a burger in a London pub than this restaurant was asking for a three course meal and what a meal.

Seven choices just for the starters ranging from local trout to garlic mushroom and bulgar wheat salad.

Nine choices for the main and five for pud.

A good selection of wines at very reasonable prices by glass or bottle accompanied this feast .

After lunch a walk around the sculpture garden filled out the afternoon quite pleasantly, there modern, prize winning sculptures set out in a somewhat hilly valley garden through which a genuine brook babbles.

Even after this exercise we were still too full to contemplate the very attractive looking "afternoon tea" that was served back at the hotel.

As we were booked in for bed breakfast and evening meal we retired to our respective rooms to shower and rest before dinner in the same exquisite small dining room in which we had lunch.

The dinner menu was very similar to lunch but given the vast choice of slow cooked local food it was not a problem. From the amuse bouche to the excellent coffee this was an experience not to be missed.

Staying in this small hotel is much like staying in the private home of a good friend. The Dutch couple who run the hotel and restaurant make every one feel at home, as do the young but talented serving staff.

Breakfast on Sunday morning was full English and more, the toast was made from the same artisan bread the went so well with the previous meals.

A leisurely visit to the in house art gallery completed our stay.

I shall return.

Room tip: Book early.

We didn't stay at the hotel but have visited for lunch and a tour of the sculpture gardens several times. As always it was an enjoyable experience. The gardens provide a stunning setting for the artwork whatever the time of year. It's good to revisit favourite sculptures and to see what has been added since the previous time. The annual sculpture competition entries provide a thought provoking moment too. The high point of the visit was lunch, described as slow food rather than fast. This doesn't mean that you wait around hungrily for hours thankfully, the service is good and it's nice to know that your food has been lovingly and freshly prepared. Good quality local ingredients and a good choice of seasonal fare. We especially love the cheeseboard, worth paying the extra £2 as it comes with a small glass of port (not mentioned on the menu so a pleasant surprise). Food of this calibre is hard to come by in North Devon so this has been a wonderful find.

Despite freezing cold weather, the stay here was generally a good experience. The sculpture garden was well worth a viewing as was the art gallery. The room was comfortable with plenty of art on the walls to gaze and wonder at. The only complaint was the bathroom which for room 7 had a shower cubicle with a badly damaged and stained tray.
The restaurant had very good food and friendly service.

Had a two night stay over Easter. The hotel is dripping with interesting art including our spacious bedroom? We found the staff welcoming and friendly and as only guests on second night we had chance to talk. After a great Sunday lunch we didn't need much and although the kitchen was closed Rinus cut us ham and cheese etc. Breakfast was super with local trout and eggs. The early evening dinner was very good value and in tapas style, was like a taster menu for the current restaurant menu. The sculpture park was more extensive than I ever imagined. One slight drawback was the eccentricity of the plumbing. overall a unique and stimulating stay with great food and hosts, including the"blonde woman". Recommend.

My 2nd visit following my previous review of July 2012, and if it's possible to improve on last time then we did - even better.
This time we had a large birthday group including two young children and we were looked after extremely well from start to finish.
Food just great - very tasty, fresh, healthy, great choice and superb value as always.
We will be back again on our next visit, that is for certain.
