We had a Saturday night stay with the discovery package. The chateau and grounds are beautiful. The room was large and very comfortable. The dinner was fantastic, service discreet and friendly. The breakfast buffet was very good. We will be going back.

We decided to book because the Chateaux looked magnificent but we were disappointed from the moment we entered the front door.

We arrived at about 2pm and were told that we could not order lunch and would have to go to the next town (about 12 km away) if we wanted to eat. The room was just "a room!" clean but nothing special. Access to all the rooms seem to be via rears stairs and a passages that had chairs stacked up, yes there was a lift but it was the same route.

The meal was good and the staff attentive and the cheese trolley was to die for but for some bazaar reason, the hotel seem to put all the British guests in a separate room from the others and that just seemed odd and again took the edge off the experience.

Of all the hotels we stayed in during our trip this was one of the more expensive but for us it fell well short of the mark overall - yes it was fine and other guests we met were returning a second time, but for us they were just missing the mark on simple things and would need to up their game a lot before we would recommend it.

I's surely not easy to run such a structure, but the family is doing thier best. A couple of suits (recommended) and a couple of dozens of small and not very comfortable rooms. No air conditioning, obviously. But a superb (but very expensive) cousine (the son of the lady-manager is participating in French version of Master Chef). But, above anything other - a "once upon a time" quiet, lush 14-hectars park, curve-full river flows through the propriety, bird are singing... If you don't know what "Douce France: means, you're gonna discover it in the chateau.

Room Tip: suits 7 & 8 highly reccomended

I stayed here with my husband and our dog and we stayed for 1 night. The outside is exceptional and the grounds are breath taking, but our room was very dated but I have to say the bed was lovely. The carpet was stained and there was a very strange smell in the hallway.
The staff were very nice but also I found when we were having dinner were very pushy. I am a vegetarian and when we were given the menus there is no vegetarian food.. We had told them that I was veg when we booked and they made sure there was food for me, I had a salad for starter, an omelette for main and a desert. The only thing I picked for myself was the desert. The price was really expensive for what I had. And I was told I had to pick my dessert even before I had my starter. My husband said his food was very good but on a whole we felt very rushed to get in, eat and get out again. We had a massage which was amazing! We were going to use the spa but when we found out that also cost extra, for what it is we didn't feel it was worth it. When we asked about breakfast they said a full breakfast with eggs, sausage (for the husband) etc so we went down this morning to find bread, jam and an egg boiler.. Again expensive for what it is. Don't get me wrong it is a nice chateau with lots of history but for us we just felt everything was very overpriced and you had to pay extra for every little thing.

....the French aren't great at sanitary porcelain.

We made Chateau des Monthairons our divisional HQ during our trip to the Verdunn battlefields. A classy slice of chateau life, superb food and constantly attentive service. The cheeseboard that appears in the dining room is pretty impressive.

The downside is that my room had a ridiculous hand held shower extension attached to the bath - a functioning full height shower is an imperative in any decent hotel. The other problem is that they don't really have internet access, it exists only around the lobby area.

Overall, an excellent location and charming hotel.

Very relaxing location away from the bustle of cities and towns. Extremely clean and reasonably well appointed rooms. A bit expensive but given the location and ambience, a reasonable price for the facilities provided. The chateaux is not too old (1850) and appointed with the latest bath fixtures as well as a spa. The grounds are expansive for a walk around in nice weather and with a little bit of a hike you can check out Petit Monthairons or in the other direction, Ancemont and Dieue sur Meuse (across the river). The staff were exceptional and desk staff were all fluent in English. Rooms were ample and included a minibar. The library was a nice place to relax and enjoy a coffee as well as read up on the history of the area and the chateaux.

Room Tip: The type and size of room is reflected in the price. The smaller rooms are less $ and located highe...

We used GPS and had no trouble finding the hotel. The chateau and grounds are beautiful, and it was a real wow moment when we drove in the main gate. We were in the area to tour the WWI battlefield areas, and the location was perfect.

The windows in our room on the first floor (2nd floor to U.S. visitors) faced both the river and the property's rear gate. We visited in October, and the vines covering some of the outer buildings were flaming red in color. Just stunning.

We dined at the chateau all but one night we were there, and these were the best dining experiences of our 2-week trip in France. Food and service were impeccable. The breakfast offerings were extensive and well presented.

Our room was comfortable and quiet, but the décor and furnishings were a little tired. We learned while checking out that an extensive addition and renovation project will commence in January 2014. We saw photos of the planned addition and worry that its modern architecture will not blend well visually with the lovely chateau, but we'd love to return and see all of the improvements!

The staff were all very friendly, but the level of helpfulness varied depending on the person on duty.

I would love to return to this area and would definitely stay at the Chateau des Monthairons.
