“Great getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2011

Having read all the not so +ve aspect of the resort being isolated , I was very pleasantly surprised once we arrived at the resort . The great service from the staff is the 1st thing that made the change.
Likes : The room is so huge and comes with 3 TVs, DVD players, full kitchen facility . Food prices is slightly on the high side but there's a low cost option available at the Delights cafe and the food is from the same kitchen. You get to sample a larger variety . After 6pm cakes and pastries goes for 50% less and these are freshly made daily . Surprise surprise it's cheap to dine even in the resort .
The beach is definitely one of the best ever , and you can have it all to yourself. During this period it's the monsoon and swimming is only left for the suicidal but did manage to get into the water and out without being sucked away by the rip tide.
Room is equiped with free Wifi and all around the resort . The Turtle village provides for a small outlet to those deprived of retail therapy and the supermarket at basement provides all basic needs even fresh meat , vegetables , fruits and of course lots of booze at very cheap prices. This place is best enjoyed by staying within the resort and avoid getting ripped off by the taxi mafias. Bring lots of books , DVDs , go for evening walks on the beach , catch the stunning sunsets

We went to Marriot Mai Khao through the Vacation Club referral programme. The "villa", which is actually an apartment, is spacious and great for families. It is clean and well-maintained. The main bedroom has a very comfortable kind size bed and the attached bathroom has a huge tub, separate shower, and two sinks. The guest room has two super singles and the attached bathroom has a small tub. The sofa in the living room can be converted into another double bed. So this is ideal for a large family. The ground floor unit has a plunge pool. The downside is that the guest room windows open to the corridor so you have to keep your curtains closed all the time for privacy. In my opinion, it is not worth paying more for the plunge pool because the main pool is just a few steps away anyway. The main pool is ok, according to my kids. They didn't like the pool slide or the kids pool and preferred to swim in the main pool. The service is satisfactory and we did not encounter any indifferent or rude staff. So the resort itself is very good.

The beach is not near. It is still within walking distance, probably 10 minutes walk away, cutting through JW Marriot or Anantara resort. You can also take a buggy there. There is nothing on the beach.

Food is a problem unless you are prepared to pay. Then again, this is expected of a resort and would be the same for other resorts as well. Based on the recommendations on TA, we went to the Coffee Club at Turtle Village.

The location is really bad and it takes at least 30 minutes to 1 hour to get to anywhere. We tried to hire a driver before our trip only to realise that not everyone will take us. One popular driver recommended on TA told us he had problems with other taxi drivers at the resort and asked us to find someone else. Thankfully, we managed to find someone in the end. I would recommend that you hire a driver to drive you around for the duration of your stay, unless you are prepared to stay in the resort all day and not venture to anywhere else.

We were there for 4 days 3 Nights and spent most of our time visiting places. Hence, we did not really use the facilities in the resort apart from the pool.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer that unless you are coming here on a good deal, you are probably better off staying at another resort. The location itself has a negative impact on everything - you end up paying more for taxi or driver either because they take advantage of you since you don't have other choices, or because they charge more due to the location (which is out of the way). You end up paying more for food because you are 'captured' and have very few other options. Spa and massages costs more because your only option is the Mandara Spa at JW Marriot. If you sign up for a tour with, say, Simba Sea Tour, you are charged more for transfer because your hotel is not at the popular Patong beach area.

Nice resort but such a pity about the location. I guess they are catering to a different market.

I just went to this hotel on the marriott vacation club referral programme, where you get a 2 bedroom villa for free for 3 nights including airport transfers, the only catch being that you must attend a 90 minute sales pitch on day 3. You can also add extra nights for $150/night.

Pros:
The room was great for a family as there was 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room & laundry room available. The hotel was small, so it wasn't a long walk to the pool. There was a kids club and gym.

Cons:
The food, beverages & service was very basic. If you do go, I suggest you plan to cook or you only eat at the coffee club at the turtlemart next door. Even breakfast!

You are allowed to use the JW Marriott restaurants next door, however the food was not great there either.

Front desk and concierge service was quite substandard and sometimes rude. Also service varies based on the serving staff - we received no welcome drinks or welcome gift, whereas my sister who arrived earlier in the day did. And staff could not explain why and did not care to apologize for any inconveniences caused. Concierge staff seemed uninterested in advising about packages available.

Daily activities are available, but again not so organised. Diving class was supposed to start at 4 on the schedule, but didn't start till 5 as they were still setting up and it appeared that they only started once the guests arrived!

Note the hotel is also about 45 minutes away from Patong and there isn't much going on around the hotel. The beach is at the main JW marriott and is on a slope.

I certainly wouldn't go for the service or the food. But if you are going in a big group - the villa is great as it accomodates 6 people and is a good deal if you get the free package.

This hotel has very spacious rooms with a open air balcony. We shared the villa with another couple and had plenty of space. The master suite was very large with both a large tub and separate shower. Everything your need for the kitchen is provided (except for the food and alcohol of course). The second room has 2 queen beds so not to worry about out fitting multiple people.

As for the hotel's location, it is very far from the rest of Phuket. We noticed most of the families just stayed around the resort or went over to the JW Marriott or the beach. They said you can't swim in the JW's pools but looked like you could just jump right in. As for the beach, it was low season so the waves were very rough and there were signs saying no swimming. You can get a local Thai massage on the beach for 400 baht (or $13.50 usd) It was great but just don't worry about all the flys around. You can get a golf cart ride to the beach but you could take about a 5 min walk. We had a vehicle so we left the area almost everyday including a trip to Tesco Lotus in town for food which is cheaper than the Turtle Village.

Many of the day trips we did through the concierge at the hotel and I would recommend going through them since they were so helpful. The hotel did everything for us and most of the trips provided transportation. We did 4 excursions including 2 full day speedboat trips to Koh Phi Phi and Krabi, John Gray Sea Canoe, and Siam Safari elephant trekking. These were all fantastic and I would also recommend a trip to Fantasea and Simon's Cabaret.

The restaurants were all good and reasonable along with the ones at JW. We did find an amazing restaurant at the resort Sala down the road. It is outdoor next to the beach and great for sunsets.

In all, if you are looking for something different than Pa Tong and a place to relax with your family this is the place.

we stayed there for three nights and had a mixed experience. not sure what this place is made for, but we didnt like that we had to stay in the same place without traffic connection, as food and drinks were totally overpriced for thai standards. the only thing we were then offered were totally overpriced taxis that would charge us a lump sum. this really made us angry, as it seemed their strategy to make you eat, drink, pay within their restaurant only. another thing we did not like, was, that there was no access to the beach. you had to get picked up and then walj to a deserted beach were they did not offer you towels or beachchairs.

Stayed there with family for 3 nights. We had a 2-room villa with a plunge pool, kitchenette, etc... very comfortable, relaxing place for a family getaway. Pleasant ambience, lot's of things for children to do. You wouldn't want to leave your villa...

My family of 6 (husband, two daughters, aged 8 & 5, brother and sister- in law) stayed for two weeks at the Mai Khao and had an incredible time. One of the most important things for us is to have a good swimming area/kids club for our girls, and they had a blast. There is a small slide (not enough to keep them occupied every day, but a good option), and an excellent pool for swimming around. They also offered juice Popsicles by the pool every day for free, which were a HUGE hit with all the kids there. They offered the walk on water balls (which both girls loved), and had an excellent kids club- they had only a 7 day schedule of activities in the kids club, so if you stayed longer than 1 week, the kids were either doing the same thing (making wind chimes, getting their hair done, etc) over or not wanting to go. The kids club staff was fantastic, as was the front desk. The pool bar staff was the only group that was not overly friendly, but I am not sure if it was a language/communication issue more than anything else. Our room was fantastic- two bedroom/two bath, full kitchen. Location was great- a bit out of the way, but with Turtle Village right next door- an Irish Pub, Coffee bar/lunch place, shopping, and a market to buy food- small but good and all fairly reasonable. They have food on site, but it was more expensive than the Turtle village. There was also a nice sized, never crowded fitness center with water bottles, and refreshing towels for when your workout is done.

We scheduled some tours through Simba Sea Trips, which were wonderful, and spent a morning riding elephants. Overall, Phuket was fantastic, and the resort was a wonderful place to stay!
