“Isolated - average food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2014

Overall our stay was okay, but as other reviewers have said it is really a resort to park yourself and not go anywhere as it is far from everything and very cost prohibitive to get anywhere by taxi, so unless you have a hire car you are sort of stuck there. It depends on what you are looking for in your holiday, we just weren't expecting the really high taxis and transfer rates.

The biggest let down at the resort was the food quality and service. Granted it probably is their busiest time of the year, but in general the food and service was poor. The buffet's were of average quality, especially their night time ones. The seafood night buffet at 1099 plus plus, was a let down as the variety and quality of the seafood wasn't good, not what you would expect from a resort such as this in Thailand, and given the number of people staying at the resort at the time, they could afford to put on a good buffet, where as it more looked liked they were trying to save money.

The service from the staff was average, I think perhaps they were understaffed given the number of guests, they tried but it wasn't anywhere good enough. Also the resort didn't seemed to have planned their dinning well, with moderate ques of people waiting for seating at breakfast on most days.

Finally our friends had a very negative experience with their room, having bugs of some sort biting them during the night. The reception staff were unwilling to acknowledge that there was a problem and my friends had to ask them to change the sheets and mattress 3 times. It was obvious that it was bugs in the room (weither they were " bed bugs" or not) as they were eaten 2 nights in a row, went to bed with no bites and woke up with many. The resort told them that they couldn't possibly be getting bitten in the night and that they must be bites from the ocean.

!A basic hospitality rule that the Holiday In failed miserably in, if a guest makes a reasonable request just do it, and don't belittle them, and say they are wrong and dismiss their issues. !

We won't return to the resort anytime soon, given the rates you pay for the rooms, the service and food quality.

Wonderfully positioned on the northern tip of Phuket Island, on the longest and whitest beach in Phuket, a very long way from Patong and any nightlife. If your looking for a family holiday this is it ! Great buffet breakfast with Asian, Western, and great selection of pastries. Christmas new year is 80% Russian and possibly the rest Chinese.
The local village has a 7/11 and a wonderful Buddist Temple, lots of agriculture and Wet and Wild Water Park is 5 mins away for the kids.
One problem is the flys, they are constant and coming from Australia I can tell you they are bad.
Overall this property is 2 years old and has a great monopoly in the family market

Room Tip: Pool access room on the northern side gets the sun all day

Dear Tracey Q,
Thank you for your wonderful review on our resort.
We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere in Mai Khao and great buffet. We are definitely in a peaceful and beautiful location.
The flies are an issue sometimes but sadly we are at the mercy of the location in an agriculture area. We have a regular spraying program to minimise them, use fly traps and air curtains to assist.
We hope to be able to welcome you back again soon.

We booked a trip to Phuket during the peak Christmas season and wanted a hotel on the beach that would accommodate 5 people (3 adults and two kids..ages 2 and 5). Holiday Inn was one of the few places that could affordably meet our requirements. We were a bit reluctant to book a Holiday Inn, but thought we would give it a try. Overall we were pleasantly surprised at this resort and would highly recommend it to families with children. Having said that if we were married without children or single we would not recommend this resort (too kid focused and not much to do at night¬)

Positives:
a) Right on the beach...very nice/clean beach.
b) The staff were very good especially to our kids
c) The kids playroom was outstanding with lots of activities for the kids and very good staff to watch out for them. We comfortably left our 5 year old there for a few hours.
d) Outdoor movie night for the kids is twice a week and was great fun.
e) The pool was very good.
f) The second kids bedroom in our suite was nicely decorated in a children’s theme...nice touch.
g) wifi was free, very strong and everywhere on the property.
h) we didn't use the gym, but ran on the beach. Took a peek and the equipment looked very good

Negatives:
a) As other reviewers have indicated there is nothing near the resort...so this is ideal for families that just want to chill out on the beach/resort. On the other hand if you want lots of local restaurants, bars and other activities you will be disappointed. There is one local Thai restaurant on the beach right next to the hotel. However, we thought this thai food was average (probably b/c they know they were the only game in “town”).
b) The food in the holiday inn was ok, would not call it great. There was little in the way of Thai food, which surprised us.

Also, as other reviewers noted you cannot hear the airplanes as they land at the nearby airport (maybe 10k away). The kids enjoyed watching them come in from the Ocean to land.

I didn't expect this Holiday Inn property could be so much beyond my expectation.

This is a very small resort and far from center of Phuket. It is surrounded by nothing but isolated. You have to call taxi to go anywhere, this is quite inconvenience.

But it was OK since everything inside this hotel made up for deficiencies.

My room was not able to see the sea but instead, the quiet resort view surprisingly made me feel peaceful and comfortable. The interior decoration is quite neat and simple.

The private beach is not big, very quite, a perfect place to enjoy the sunset.

Another thing I'd like to recommend is that near the gate of the resort, there is a very small Thai restaurant by the roadside. I stayed 3 nights and went there for lunch/dinner every day. Definitely the best restaurant I've ever had. This is a Must-Go place.

Stayed: Dec 19 to 24th
Room: Corner Deluxe Pool Access Room (8101)

Pros:
- Amazing setup and resort
- Awesome facilities for kids (we don't have one but we could see)
- Very helpful and courteous staff (say my hi to Pou!)
- Hotel is bang on the beach and great facilities provided at the beach and pool
- Far away from everything so a great and clean beach
- You can see flights landing from close quarters if you go a kilometer on the left of the beach
- The beach side restaurant Pesto and J's cafe has some great food
- Movies Night: Very well setup projector and bes on the open garden for a popcorn movie night. Excellent idea and hospitality. Only thing is to beware of the mosquitoes, may be a net or something should help.

Cons:

- Since its far away (about 30 kms) , taxi drivers charge 1200 baht one-way to Patong/Phuket Town, which is dead expensive. In general, everything in Phuket is expensive and it seems like they literally loot tourists by cartelization and setting a very high price of everything. Hotel offers a shuttle but if you do not have a 50% discount coupon (which we got), that seems very expensive too. The shuttle has its last trip pretty early too, I would suggest to move the last shuttle trip to atleast 8pm from Patong so that we can enjoy the night bazaar there.

- Food is good but extremely expensive with nearly a 20% tax. There are three restaurants at a stone throws distance and I would recommend the first one of that to have your food, the food is excellent even better than the hotel and charges are nominal, not to mention the amazing environment that gears up in the evening there.

- Would have liked some more activities to do at the resort. They do have a schedule of activities but we felt many of them were not carried out

- They will offer their "discounted" rates for the buffet breakfast, be very careful in buying that. In my case, I just had omlettes daily, which I could have bought at half the rate as a-la-carte.

Room Tip: - Choose corner rooms for privacy

This hotel is beautiful and the service is great. However, there are a few minor areas in which the hotel can improve.
Firstly, while there is a great range of foods in the hotel the price is very expensive compared to the rest of Thailand. Luckily I had already paid for bed and breakfast.
Secondly it took a while to check in and the lack of English skills at the check in desk proved to be a barrier which slowed down check in time (I'm not sure the staff knew what they were doing).
Thirdly, after spending a week at the hotel we checked out in the morning and left our luggage waiting until our 9:30pm pick up. We then asked if we could still use the shuttle bus to get us to the shopping centre in the day so we weren't stuck at the hotel waiting, and we were told that as we were no longer guests we could not use the shuttle bus. Ironically we then went to the concierge desk and booked the shuttle bus anyway. It was still frustrating to be told we weren't able to use it after spending a week at their hotel.
Finally, the shuttle bus service only operates 3 times a day with the latest time to leave the shopping mall, whilst still being able to catch the shuttle bus, was around 5:30pm. This isn't great if you want to stay out for your evening meal.
If you don't want to spend all of your money at the hotel I advise you try one of the local restaurants. If you exit the front of the hotel and turn right, around the corner are a few shacks which were O.K - nothing special but much cheaper and filled the gap. There is also another restaurant as you go on the beach - turn right and around the corner is a restaurant which is a little better than the shacks and serves a few comfort foods and cocktails.
Overall the rooms are clean and new, the beach is very quiet and the sea clear. A good stay with a few niggles which are easy to correct.

We only stayed at this resort on our last night in Phuket, given the proximity to the airport. We thought that it would tale a lot less time and that it will be a lot cheaper to travel to the airport from there, since we had an early flight. The first part was true, the taxi fare however was of 700 Baht, just as much as it would cost from Partong for instance.
We arrived around noon and they didn't have the room ready so we had to leave our suitcases in the luggage room had lunch and afterwards waited by the beach. This doesn't come in handy, especially if you are not prepared for sunbathing (and after traveling you are most probably not). The thing that shocked us was that the hotel didn't seem to be full, judging by the people we saw in the resort I would say that the occupancy was not that high. I really don't get why would they stick to their absurd after 2PM check-in policy if they have available rooms. Just give it to the miserable waiting guest already, as it doesn't cost you extra!
The room was good - very modern and it seemed to have been recently renovated. The bathroom in particular was very spacious, with a huge walk-in shower.
Now, coming to the activities, I would say that staying here leaves you pretty much stranded. The resort is in the middle of nowhere. Given the fact that we only stayed for one night is was ok, but - boy! - were we glad that we chose another hotel to accommodate in for the largest period of our stay in Phuket. You are very far from the major attractions with absolutely nothing to do outside the resort. We looked for a local shop to buy some souvenirs and after walking a mile or so to the main road we only came across a local shop that sold food items and tools. To their defense, they do offer some minibus rides to the most popular areas of Phuket, but they only left at certain hours and the prices where not that special as advertised by the front desk (some 300 Baht per ride per person, which is a lot considering that for a group larger than three you could take a taxi instead).
Mai Khao beach is not the best one in Phuket either. We preferred the pool instead, as the shore was very abrupt (due to the high waves) and there were some unidentified stinging forms of life in the water. They have some sun lounges on the beach but they were very dirty. The pool was a different story: the staff at the pool bar did not seem courteous and polite at all, they were constantly making all sorts of jokes between them and turning up the volume of the music. Somehow we felt that the service level did not rise up to what we've been accustomed to in Thailand. We didn't get to relax by the pool either, even if it was very well designed and inviting.
We had an awful experience dining in their restaurant: J's. On the spot we felt that the food was very tasty, but we got some terrible cases of stomach-flu the day after. And J's was the only place we ate that day, so this couldn't have been caused by something else.
When we checked out we had another unpleasant surprise: they add 10% service charge to the accommodation. Yes, we were used to that in restaurants but this was the only hotel we've stayed in Thailand that had this additional charge.
Having said all this, I am very glad we only stayed here for one night, as with a longer stay things could have gotten a lot worse.
