“Mai Khao Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2010

Marriott's Phuket Beach Club is a Marriott Vacation Club International Timeshare resort and is attached the the JW Marriott Phuket and shares all the hotel's facilities. Each Unit is a 2 bed 2 bath apartment fully equipped wityh kitche, dining and living area as well as a laundry room.

We have now vacationed here every year for the last 5 years and regard it as the number one MVCI resort in the world. There is nothing that I can fault at this resort - it is simp[ly perfect in every way.

As we arrived, our first impression was great - We were impresed with reception as we checked in really quick and were taken to our rooms on golf buggy. The staff were really friendly and couldnt do enough to help us. We were also given traditional Thai flower necklaces on our arrival, which was a nice touch.

The actual hotel was set on a lovely private beach which we were able to swim from (kayaks were also available for use) and the hotel pools were huge with plenty of sunbeds - Fresh towels, fresh water and fruit were also suplied by the pool staff (free of charge). The gardens by the pools were well maintained too.

The only draw back is that the hotel is set in the middle of nowhere (1 hour drive from Patong) so they seemed to charge a lot in the restraunts and bars!!! The deli was the cheapest and food was beautiful, the other good choice is Turtle Village which is next to the resort (walking distance) - There is also a supermarket here, which sold most things.

All in all a great place and would love to come back!

Judging from my previous reviews, u can probably tell that I am quite partial when it comes to Marriott Vacation clubs and with good reason too. I also think parents with young kids have even more reason to love MVCs considering the many family/kids activities, huge premise with 3 pools and ah, the life-saving kids club, which more than makes up for its secluded location. Here, the kids get to bake, colour, watch movies and even do kids yoga and Thai kick boxing. It’s no wonder my needy 5 year old is more than happy to cast me aside every morning and skip her way to the kids club; and be left there till 5pm, while the rest of us can lay in the sun, explore nearby towns and even enjoy a restful nap in the afternoons. Pity it's been raining since the day we arrived! But that's another story...

The premise is gorgeous here with lots of water features, stunning architecture, and really nice rooms. We usually stay at Marriott Mai Khao Beach which is close by and the rooms equally nice, but does not enjoy sea frontage like the Phuket beach club which also happens to share the same massive grounds as the JW Marriott. Another thing to note is, although Mai Khao beach is not exactly a pristine or swimming beach, the lack of crowd here allows for a romantic stroll, lovely picnic or simply tanning on the beach without people walking by every second.

Food is actually not too bad, apart from the price but this is a hotel after all, so what do you expect? I read a review about how buffets seem to be the only choice of meals here. That is absolutely not true. You can always choose the ala carte menu and I highly recommend the Italian restaurant, Cucina which is reasonable in price (for hotel standards) and offers really good Italian fare. The Thai restaurant, Gin Jaa is very expensive for local standards but it is also very good. A must try is the Thai beef curry with pumpkin which has a peanut base; and very unique. Sorry, can’t quite remember the name for it!

I suppose the major setback about this place, as with the JW Marriott Phuket and the Marriott Mai Khao Beach would be its location, which really is out in whoop whoop nowhere. Thankfully there is Turtle village next door, which is a small shopping village that even has a pub, ice cream palour, café and few other interesting shops. The other thing you can and should do is rent a car (which we always do) at the airport for 1100 bht a day (who can complain about the price?) and drive to Central Mall, or the Premium factory outlet, which is about 30 mins away to do your shopping. There are also a couple of really good Thai restaurants within a km radius from hotel like Kin Dee restaurant which serves authentic Thai food for half the hotel prices, and Thanoon seafood which is about 1.5km away, across the border in Phang Nga (yes, the hotel is that far North). Also, try the Laguna area which is less than 30 mins drive away to an assortment of restaurant, bars, shops and massage joints where you’ll find an hour’s massage at 300 bht! So, my point really is, there are options and you don’t have to sit around the hotel and sulk about it’s isolation and lack of food choices! Also, avid golfers will be happy to know that one of Phuket's best golf courses, the Blue Canyon is just round the corner.

Back to the hotel…did I ever mention the beds? One of the best things about staying at a Marriott hotel is, you always know you'll get a good night’s sleep because the beds (pillows and all) are by far, the most comfortable we've ever come across, apart from our own that is – considering we bought our complete bed set (minus the mattress) from the very same Thai brand that supplies the Marriott chain here in Thailand, and if I’m not mistaken the rest of the world too. This, after we stayed at the Marriott Mai Khao 2 years ago and found ourselves struggling to get out of bed because it was so bladdy comfortable! Never regretted becoming a Marriott vacation club member since and will recommend it to anyone thinking about it. If anyone would like a referral to enjoy a 4 days stay at a 2 bedroom apartment here for free, let me know.

After having read reviews of this property over the past 2 months, we were ready to cancel. After sending a message to a reviewer, he told us to reconsider, maybe he was being to critical! Well, we are certainly glad we went. The property is spectacular, the grounds immaculate. Lush and tropical. It reminded us of Kauai. The food was above average, sometimes great!! The one downside was , like everyone says, the remoteness. It is an hour to Patong, but we rented a car and went as we pleased. There were plenty of taxis and we never felt hassled as other reviwers have stated. All the staff were courteous and respectful. We used the Mandara Spa, and yes it was typical Spa prices, but I had the best swedish massage EVER with K. Mot. 90 minutes of pure bliss. we also had daily massages out on the beach, 400 baht or 12 USD!! Gotta have 1 a day at those prices... And all 3 pools were amazing. Went to a different 1 daily. The beach was calm and bath warm. If we didn]t have to spend 30 plus hours on a plane, we would go back..

We had a great time here, a short drive from the airport, on arrival met with cooling drink and orchid garland, a lovely touch, the staff were ALL very nice courteous and helpful, the apartment was huge we had a two bedroom, daily maid service, free internet, and ample free bottled water.
The restaurants were pricey we ate in the Andaman grill, and the Siam Deli, this was a god send, pastries were excellent, everything was lovely, but we felt that the resort was too far away from things, there was a chargeable shuttle bus, which was a help, but perhaps this should be a little cheaper or even free, as having to eat most times at the Marriott made our holiday a tad expensive.
The beach was ok but I would not say it was good for families with small children, the sea was rough as it was monsoon season, but we were lucky we only had rain at night, and one whole day,
All in all apart from it being pricey we had a great relaxing time

We spend 3 nights at the Marriott vacation club as we received an invitation from friends. You can then stay 3 nights for free but have to attend one of those sales pitches to buy some sort of timeshare thingies. Well, as this wold take only 1.5hrs, and being Ducth we love free stuff, we took up the offer. The hotel was very accomodating and gave us a 2 bedroom pool villa upon request.
Poolvilla might not be the right word as it is actually an appartment on the ground floor with 5 floors on top of you but it has a garden and private pool.
The room is Marriott standard so no designy input whatsoever, but it is comfy, has a kitchen, large bedrooms and a dining. Weird thing is the terrace is not partially covered so when it is raining you can't sit outside. You can swim though as the pool is partially covered. Don't know who was the smart guy coming up with this solution....

Food is pretty horrible, everything is buffet style and of buffet quality. Room service menu is very basic. However all the food and drinks are quiet expensive, even everything you collect from the large take away deli. You are pretty much stuck to the hotel and with a Marriott card you will get a discount so it is full of American's carrying this card and hanging around, getting no Thau experience whatsoever.
We decided to go for lunch at the next door hotels, Anantara and Sala where you sit at the seaside and receive a lunch of amazing good quality.

O yes, when you are on the free package you are put away in the part of the hotel at the back so no sea closeby, that is for paying timeshare guests only. However it does not really entice you to buy one of those packages. During the salespitch they will show you the seafacing part and tell you next time you can stay there. But for us, no next time ever again, even not if we can stay for free. I am better of in my own home!
