“Good hotel but with some flaws”
Reviewed 10 January 2014

We have arrived at the JW Mariott immediately after New Year's and after staying at the fabulous Shangri La Hotel in Bangkok so the expectations were high. The hotel is located next to the most beautiful and quiet beach of Phuket about 15 minuted away from the airport. The location is somewhat secluded and, if you would like to experience the local restaurants and bars in Phuket or any other busy area, as a matter of fact, you will have to travel about 45 minutes to an hour by car. Thus, my advice, if you choose this hotel and you want to visit the island you need to rent a car.The rooms are spacious, nicely furnished and with many facilities. One of the first things we have noticed was that, during a very busy period such as the New Year's Holidays the hotel does not cope with the number of guests. We have to stand in line for 15-20 min on a number of occsasions at the breakfast just to get a table and on two consecutive days they ran out of beach towels. The hotel has a few restaurants that have very awkard opening hours (12-15 pm for lunch or 18-22 for dinner) which is really unfortunate for a hotel this size as not only that it tends to get crowded and overbooked but also very challenging for the staff. As far as the restaurats and bars are concerned JW Mariott is has, by all means, the MOST EXPENSIVE food and drinks on the Phuket island, none of them living up to expectation, as a matter of fact. It's ridiculous how much you can pay for a steak at lunchtime (1500m BAHT - 45 USD) or just a cocktail by the pool (400 BAHT - 12 USD). Compare it to any other resort on the island and you will see that it is aprox 60% more expensive than the most expensive one. On the other hand, the staff of the hotel is insufficient, almost none of them speak English at all and they are totally untrained for a 5 star hotel level of service. Also, speaking about food and drinks, we were very surprised to see that the hotel does not serve freshly squeezed juices for breakfast but rather has a large selection of canned ones! This in a place that is fruit paradise and where fruits cost almost nothing. Honestly, I've stayed at some 4 star hotels that serve at least freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast and this at the open bar, without having to ask for it expressly.

The other thing that bothered us were the prices for the day trips and activities outside the resort much much higher than the ones that you can get from any local tourist office.
In any case, we have stayed at the Renaissance Hotel (also a Mariott group hotel) in Koh Samui two years ago and I can say that it was way over the JW Mariott, at least in terms of service, quality of food and prices. Also, if you have to chose between Phuket and Koh Samui, I high recommend to chose Samui - it s just better.
As a conclusion, good overall experience at the hotel, nice beach (public beach by the way), nice tennis courts, large and well designed swimming pools. On the other hand, far from all or any action, as a matter of fact, insufficient and untrained staff, ridiculous prices for food and drinks.

WE stayed at this resort from 31st Dec 2013 to 5th Jan 2014.
I feel the cost we paid was way to much in comparison to our experience.

This resort needs up gradation of facilities.

They should have more recreation facilities.

The food was good, but they could do better.

I feel they should have more water sports options as well and more activity for children.

A short one day stay on our way from a longer holiday but it was a worthy stop. Resort was beautyful. We liked the Pools and the choice of Resturants. Hotel provide transport to next door hotels and also a shuttle bus (free) . To the down town it will take around an hour. The staff were very attentive, friendly and helpful at all times. The hotel is not the cheapest but you get the product and service for the value you pay. The hotel is very close to the beach and has many activities and choice for you to spend your time. It was a wonderful short stay and I will come back again.

I stayed in this beautiful place during November 13-15, 2013 for a regional conference.
Two things bothered me when I arrived at the Phuket Airport - 1) the hotel is located more than an hour away from the downtown therefore this will be an enclosure without much fun, and 2) because of isolation, I will have to tolerate and be limited by what the hotel may offer.

On arrival, the staff with a friendly smile greeted by offering a friendship wrist-band with a nature-protection message. So there is a cause to which a part of the money is going! Great! Very quickly, I was led to a room on the ground floor but still with a balcony from where one can enjoy the sea and also the greens. Perfect combination of view, comfort, environment, and service.
The evening was with a cultural show - the artists were in the pond filled with water - and they were holding fire posts. The ambiance was magical. To dine in such a background - who needs a downtown dining?
The breakfast next day was very typical of Thai hospitality - you want anything for your breakfast - you find it there. and the service is great.
The conference halls were peaceful and elegant. The Security Manager's brief on the harmlessness of crocodiles and sharks and the securities measures calmed everyone down. The CEO provided a brief - she did not advertise her hotel - she was talking about the people and the cultural heritage of the island! You feel like being home, amidst people who take much pride in being what they are.
I returned back after three days with a great relaxation, sense of contribution to the conference, and a fresh doze of the Thai hospitality at its best.

Room Tip: All rooms are good, elderly people may request for a room on the same floor as the restaurant but a...

Dear Amod D,

Thank you for taking the time to describe the resort. We are delighted to hear that you liked the wrist-bands made by the local sea gypsies and our small way of contributing to the community. You returning home relaxed and rejuvenated by Thai hospitality after your stay is our primary aim and we hope that you will return soon on vacation.

Wishing you a wonderful 2014!

Regards,

Ashley

We stayed at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa during Christmas for 5 nights. The resort came recommended by many friends and colleagues and it did not disappoint at all.

The location on Mai Khao beach at the northern end of the island is fairly secluded and only about a 20 minute drive from the airport. This location means the resort is away from the hustle and bustle of Phuket Town and other parts of the island that attract hordes of tourists. We enjoyed this because it meant that despite being the busy season, we were still able to have a nice and relaxing escape on the beach! However, please keep in mind that if you want to take a day trip, it may mean that you will need to drive about one hour to the southern end of the island to do so (we did this twice with no issues).

The hotel concierge was very helpful in arranging airport pickup as well as day trips to other smaller islands, elephant safari ride, etc...top notch service in all aspects of the resort!

We tried all the restaurants at the resort (with the exception of the Italian one) and enjoyed all of our meals, especially the breakfast buffet (sit outside if you can). Our favorite restaurant for lunch/dinner was the Siam Cafe. It is the most reasonably priced and also serves a good selection of both western and Thai food. The resort also did an outstanding buffet dinner on Christmas eve with outdoor seating by the beach.

In addition to the beach, the resort has 3 pools, which helps to provide good places to both relax and also allows area for kids to play without disturbing the guests that want more seclusion. Also, there are multiple places to get cheap massages between the pools and the beach, I would highly recommend doing this more than once! However, cheap is not the theme for the rest of the resort, you should be prepared to pay a premium for most things, but will also likely receive top quality for that premium.

This resort will always be a special place for us because I picked the setting of Mai Khao beach with a beautiful sunset to propose to my fiance! We are now happily engaged and can't wait to return to this resort in the future.

Went there with two families and 5 kids. The pools are very nice and the kids enjoyed them a lot. Beach is nice too. The rooms are good and clean, the service is good and staff are nice and friendly. Breakfast was a little bid a pain, as we often had to wait quite a while before getting seated. The restaurants, especially the Japanese, are very good but expensive.

I somehow managed to snag three free nights in one of the two bedroom apartments here. All I can say is, I can't wait to return in December 2014! Our stay was one of the best ever! We travel to Thailand for the holidays every year and I always try to use Marriott points for the new year timeframe. We like a beach for the relaxation and vegging after a couple of weeks in Bangkok.

Our two bedroom was very large and well equipped. We were four people and never felt crowded. One of the best features is the large shaded balcony/terrace, where we spent a considerable amount of time.

Mai Khao Beach is somewhat isolated. A car would have been helpful, and we will be sure to book one next time.

A varirty of restaurants are located on the huge resort property. Sadly, we did not have time to try more than a couple of them. Then there is the Turtle Village just a short walk down the road. We found Turtle Mart and stocked up on breakfast foods and snacks. There are also a selection of restaurants in the Village which we had no time to sample.

Even though the resort was at capacity levels, it never felt that crowded! Restaurant reservations were necessary, and we had to settle for early seating times, but it was fine.
