“Overpriced”
Reviewed 7 March 2014

Positives - very warm, friendly and helpful staff. Rooms, cleanliness, servicing were good. Pool area relaxing, well laid out, water slides for kids. All rooms are pool facing. Good breakfast with lots of choice, and served until 11:00. Good quiet location, near a good beach, with places to eat and drink. Plenty for kids to do - kids club, activities, etc.
Negatives - rooms, food, drinks overpriced. We tried one buffet dinner and found it grossly overpriced and not good value. Didn't eat in hotel after that. Hotel general guest areas were very hot, poor air circulation despite the ceiling fans. Despite being advertised as a resort hotel there wasn't any real entertainment in the evenings, just a singer at the bar/ restaurant. Not enough sun lounges by the pool.
Area was quiet, there's a shopping mart just outside the hotel, and a few restaurants, including those on the beach. Couple of beach bars. The public beach was a 5 min walk from the hotel, but was clean and lots of sunbeds (chargeable - 200 Bhat per bed). Surin beach is a quiet area. Currency exchange place just outside the hotel.
Spa available in hotel but again very expensive. There are a couple of massage parlours just outside the hotel and these were very reasonably priced and good. Also massage places on the beach.

Room Tip: We had a ground floor room which was great as we could walk straight out to the pool side

Dear VLT 83,

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review of the Resort after your recent stay with us.

I was pleased to note that you enjoyed our resort facilities, staff services and generally had a pleasant and memorable holiday. Our resort is a family-friendly resort, there are many activities for Kids to do and also the resort has one of the best kids clubs on the island. I was also pleased that you enjoyed the surrounding area especially a beautiful of Surin Beach and many Phuket beach clubs around there.

We truly appreciated your positive comments and hope to welcome you back in the future.

Best regards,
Thitirat T.

Surin beach is a great place for a relaxed treat in Phuket.
The beach is great and the hotel is geared for the relaxed at heart.
The slides are fun, the restaurant is amazing and the pools are worth the day just relaxing and chilling.
Well worth the visit if you have not visited here you have lost out.
The pool bar was my second home.
So well catered for families and especially children. Beach is amazing and quiet.

Room Tip: All good - Not too close to the pool if you do not have children as the further the quieter

I have stolen the title of the review from someone else (thanks Philip N), but it is the perfect summary. Great as a "base camp" for the area if you can get a discounted rate, but not quite a sophisticated experience you'd get, for example, at The Twinpalms next door (which is of course also much more expensive)

PLUS AND MINUSES
+ location, location, location. the hotel is a couple of mins walking from Surin Beach by the two best Beach clubs in the area (Bimi and Catch(. A few restaurants - have not tried them - are down the street and some 10-15 walk there are a couple of grocery stores and an Italian delicatessen - great for continental breakfast.
+ Staff, as almost always in Thailand, is great and very helpful.
+ Rooms are and modern and spacious and surrounds a large swimming pool. There is a large walk in shower and very large fridge which is great if you want to store fresh fruit and juices - not the usual mini mini-bar
+ Good gym for this type of facilities, running machines, free weights, benches, better than many 5* gyms

- some of the furniture, especially the bathrooms are a bit dated and would do with some restoring and updating
- The daily cleaning is a bit superficial, not very thorough
- For some reasons daily work in the corridors were carried out early in the morning or late at night, probably not the best time in an holiday resort
- Lots of families with children by the pool. not sure why would would stay by the pool rather than going to the beach if you were either on your own or as a couple, but there you are
- Breakfast looked like a rather bland affair (have not tried)

We just recently stayed for 2 weeks at the DoubleTree Surin and loved it. The location is perfect just by the magnificent Surin beach and the staff at this hotel is very friendly. A big thanks to them for making our holiday a very pleasant experience!

We stayed at the 4th floor room with a nice view to the pool area. Overall the room was bit 'oldish' and could be renovated in the near future but it still worked for us very well. The bed was huge and comfortable but the air conditioning was a bit loud, though effective. Many reviewers here complain about the WiFi and I have to agree; the connection speed and coverage could have been better. But despite that I was able to use the connection in our room for simple web surfing when really needed. And hey, at least we traveled to Phuket to do something completely different than surf the web or update our Facebook pages, so I don't really see the limited WiFi functionality as a deal breaker.

The breakfast buffet is quite good and there should be plenty to choose from for everyone. We tested the restaurant's evening buffet only once and it was OK although a bit on the pricey side. And as there are plenty of nice beach restaurants at Surin we usually ended up having dinner there.

The pool at this hotel is very nice and clean and we always found nice sunbeds for us at the pool area the as it wasn't too crowded at the time of our holiday. Also, the pool bar service was great.

Overall I have to say that it was a very relaxing holiday at DoubleTree in Surin Beach.

The Double Tree Resort is a good-value hotel in a prime location, a few minutes' walk from both the beach and restaurants.

The rooms are adequate, although looking a little tired. We ordered a double room (queen) and were given a room with two standard-size double beds moved together. This is useless as the linen does not fit properly and, of course, there is a slight gap down the middle of the bed. Most of the rooms we saw had this configuration – presumably to allow four occupants to a room. The rooms are not even large enough to allow for two double beds. We asked for the beds to be separated and the bedside table put back in the centre. Apart from this, the rooms were OK.

The pool area is nice and we were lucky enough to have a ground-floor room close to a quieter area of the pool (away from the children's section). Although we had no problem with sun beds (I am an early riser), I cannot imagine there would be anywhere near enough beds if all the guests decided to sit by the pool! There are a lot of rooms in this hotel.

Most of the guests appeared to be from mainland China and Russia – there were few Europeans.

I cannot comment on the food because we always eat out (very easy in Surin) to avoid the ridiculous prices charged by hotels for F&B (especially buffet breakfasts).

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would definitely return because the hotel offers good value for money.

Room Tip: The east wing is furthest from the children's pool and the bar/restaurant. Ask for a light room...

I have stayed at DoubleTree Phuket Hilton for a long weekend and truly enjoyed the hotel. The location is good as it's very close to restaurants, small shops and the beach. The hotel service is excellent. Pool is nice for kids as they have two water slides. Breakfast quality is good.

I stayed for two weeks in the Doubletree on Surin by myself in November 2013, originally meant to be travelling with my partner, the hotel couldn't be more accommodating to make me feel comfortable and safe in what is a very family orientated hotel, whilst on my own. On arrival I was upgraded to a suite, which was great as the weather was rather dubious at times. The breakfasts were excellent and to be able to get a freshly cooked omelette every morning was lovely. I didn't spend a huge amount of time around the pool, as it was very noisy (again not unexpected when the pool has slides!) so spent most of my time down at the beach. Its a shame that the Doubletree haven't managed to secure a spot for sun loungers so you don't have to go and pay every day - which does get a touch tiresome. However the beach is gorgeous and clean and it did mean cheaper drinks!
There are loads of restuarants on Surin, some cheap, some not so cheap, I felt completely safe and was very much left to my own devices. I had some absolutely fantastic meals at Taste restuarant and would have gone back to eat every night if I could! The Salt bar, do a great Sunday chill session to watch the sunset and do a good Happy Hour as well.
I didn't have any problems with the service in the hotel, they were all very attentive and helpful. I look forward to going back.
