“Faux-chic can't mask mediocrity”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

We booked Ruen Thai on our first night in Phuket and our initial thoughts were decent enough. However, when compared to the market standard, it was a disappointment.

The restaurant itself does have a pleasant décor - certainly compared to the more earthly places along the beach - but it has a hollow feel to it. It lacked a bit of character and felt somewhat generic. For example, while the food was reasonable, other local restaurants let you pick out your sea food, which adds to the experience and at least the perception of freshness. The prawns we ordered were tiddly compared to other independent restaurants.

The food was also aimed toward the tourist-strength flavours. I appreciate this as the de facto starting point for food but the curry had little heat to it at all.

It was way too expensive.

“Such a Shame!”
Reviewed 1 July 2013

I had really high expectations when I visited this lovely restaurant. It was busy and lovely Thai Music was playing. The staff were beautifully dressed and attentive. Then came the food although it was beautifully presented but it lacked taste and quite frankly I have had better food from the street vendors. It was very average at most, a disappointing end to what I thought was going to be an awesome experience.

“Enjoyable meal, but try the cooking classes!”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

We had a nice meal on our first night at the resort. The soup was excellent - hot, sour and spicy, the starters really nice but the mains were inconsistent - one was beautiful, the other only OK. However, we had booked for the afternoon Thai cooking classes and they were brilliant - a head chef and an assistant on hand, with a good deal of the preparation done for you. You can adapt the menus as you go along depending on how you like your food, then get to eat the four course meal you've cooked while sitting on a balcony overlooking a beautiful lagoon. Fabulous, and you get a certificate, a book (of recipes for the menu you've just cooked plus general information on Thai cooking and ingredients), and an apron as souvenirs. A superb way to spend an afternoon!

“Terrible Thai Food for My Asian Palate”
Reviewed 20 September 2012

Heard many guests at the resort where I was staying raving about this Thai restaurant in Dusit Thani Hotel in Laguna, Phuket. So, I thought I had to try it out. Even sitting down whilst waiting for my food to arrive, I heard returning guests saying they have to make a trip here every time they visit Phuket.

My goodness, no offence to other reviewers, but this confirms that the Caucasian's taste to Asian cuisine is TERRIBLE. The food here was way below par. And to be honest to those that cooks a fair bit, it's really not hard to cook and prepare Thai food. With Ruen Thai, even the simple task of getting the good mix of thai herbs was a embarrassing. We ordered a spicy fish soup, pork green curry, deep fried softshell crab and a stir fry mix vegetable with oyster sauce. The best dish was the fried softshell crab followed by the stir fry mix vegetable. And again, those two are not hard dishes to replicate at home.

I would definitely recommend any Asian tourists to steer clear of this venue. You are better off heading to Lotus along Bang Tao Beach for a more fulfilling Thai cuisine. You are getting a lot more for your money's worth.
