We booked Ruen Thai on our first night in Phuket and our initial thoughts were decent enough. However, when compared to the market standard, it was a disappointment.
The restaurant itself does have a pleasant décor - certainly compared to the more earthly places along the beach - but it has a hollow feel to it. It lacked a bit of character and felt somewhat generic. For example, while the food was reasonable, other local restaurants let you pick out your sea food, which adds to the experience and at least the perception of freshness. The prawns we ordered were tiddly compared to other independent restaurants.
The food was also aimed toward the tourist-strength flavours. I appreciate this as the de facto starting point for food but the curry had little heat to it at all.
It was way too expensive.
