“Lovely oasis for a relaxing holiday”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

Hotel was great, clean rooms, friendly staff and excellent service. Breakfast was fantastic with lots of choices. Pool area lovely although very quiet, so if you enjoy peace and quiet, this hotel is for you. Hotel Day Spa very expensive and not good value for money.

When you read all the recent reviews here and consider the repeated positive comments you can bet it's an accurate and objective assessment of what is on offer at the Dusit Thani Laguna, Phuket. IE totally believable! Sure there will always be the one or two subjective detractions and I wouldn't disagree that food and drink in general is not cheap. But then I'd have been surprised if prices had been cheap when this is after all a 5* show. What often tipped the balance as in other hotels and restaurants was the 10% service charge and then 7%vat loaded onto menu prices. Actually, the room service menu featured many of the lowest price dishes available from the general menu. Even if these could not be described as 'really cheap' the quality and quantity was faultless so at the equivalent of about 9GBP their signature Laguna Burger, salad and fries was top drawer and many individual Thai dishes came in at under 8GBP and again the quality on offer every time was excellent. We very much enjoyed the eating-out experiences of both the Pool Café and the Casuarina Beach Restaurant. Making value-for-money every morning out of a pre-paid breakfast at 13GBP can be problematic unless you are a big eater first thing’ or if you head in 11am latest... that's a decent time to keep on serving 'til..... and make it more a brunch to set you up for all day. But again if you do like your food and can give over a couple of hours for breakfasting you'll never be disappointed with the fayre on offer. It's all here ... Full American/British ... European with croissant, rolls, pastries, cheeses and sliced meats ....Japanese Sushi and Chinese conjee and noodles ....masses of fruit, bread, juices, tea, coffee and scrambled eggs and omelets cooked to perfection while you wait. There are plenty of staff at your elbow for anything you need and all provided with a smile and outstanding politeness. It was a joy to rise early and go dining! The 3 mile-long Bang Tao beach is gorgeous to walk in either direction with the Dusit right in the middle. The sea conditions in March are fine for safe bathing but the pool is a delightful, colourful, central attraction. And if actual poolside ain't your thing the staff will set you up a spot anywhere in the fabulous, tidy, garden grounds or the edge of the beach, with loungers, umbrella, a small table and plenty of big towels. It seemed somewhat busier than on our previous visits that we've taken here over 20-odd years. There is a large Russian presence now that didn't visit 12 years ago and the place attracts young Asian families that gives it some healthy energy even though we'd have to say it's a very pleasant, really well ordered, secure, relaxed, quiet atmosphere all around the site apart from some expected kiddie antics in the shallow-end of the pool. My wife and I don’t think it gets any better than this. Our ground floor, corner, ocean front room in the south central wing was fine for us even tho’ it wasn’t as big as some rooms we’ve had in good hotels in the past, with a huge, comfortable bed, a great bathroom and powerful shower with plenty of toiletries and everything you’d expect from a 5* establishment. The twice daily cleaning service was exemplary as was the rest of the staff provision. Our 9 nights stay was a relaxing joy. We touched base with Mr Chakrist Ponrong the Restaurant Director and enjoyed conversation with this very pleasant gentleman on several occasions. The management don’t avoid touching base with the guests and are happy to hear what you think about their operation that they are justifiably very proud of.
Just a word about our whole 14 days in Phuket. We hired a car so we were totally independent and could get out and about very easily. Certainly most of the south of the island is very busy with traffic, considering the place is pretty small and not a massive population. There are more cars and pick-ups these days with people taking advantage of driving around in their own small, air conditioned accommodation! Add on the motor bikes and scooters and Phuket town especially looks on the face of it to be a driving nightmare! It isn’t….we never saw one accident…you just have to be careful, learn to be patient, be very alert, learn the lane discipline…lol…. and come to terms with the local idiosyncratic nature of road use. Thais are polite and placid people and generally do not do road rage as we know it. A quick beep of the horn to let you know they are there close to you is for your benefit so you can return the hire car without a damage penalty. I loved the experience of driving around the local roads to Tesco-Lotus to buy some supplies and we headed off the island one day 50 miles north to Khao Lak that got hit badly by the tsunami of 2004. It was a fabulous drive not at all stressful and we felt we were seeing the real thing driving through less touristy areas and miles of rubber tree forests. North of Phuket airport is a slightly off the beaten track beach at Mai Kao where turtles come ashore to lay eggs. It’s a desert island kind of moment on a totally unspoiled stretch without any tourist development and with the hired car we were able to just drive to it to get the experience. It wasn’t cheap at 15GBP a day but we did value having our own wheels.

Room Tip: Facing the lagoon/inland are cheapest....ground floor ocean front are good value for what they give...

Dear BoroWalkers,

May we thank you for your last visit at Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket and for your review going into such details.

I appreciate your effort demonstrating that we are offering value in the restaurants also highlighting the good level of our breakfast offering as well as our staff enjoying looking after our guests all around our resort.

The long beach which we have direct access to is regarded by many as the best in Phuket.
Khun Chakrist, our Restaurants Manager does remember you very well and thank you for mentioning him on the review.

I cannot agree more on your general feeling as far as driving around the Island, a safe and entertaining exercise I enjoy daily.

We are all looking forward to welcoming you back the soonest possible to our small paradise.

Kindest regards,

Just got back home (London) from an amazing time at the dusit thani laguna resort.
It far exceeded my expectations. The resort is bigger than i imagined it would be. The pool is a very good size and suitable for children and adults as depths go to 2m. It very clean and staff very friendly.
Wifi is free throughout the resort without the need for a password.
There are a few restaurants onsite. They are dearer than we would like (£7 for a brie sandwich) so I would probably advise a visit to the Mini supermarket just outside the laguna park. They sell everything and at very good prices. I would also recommend Deepavali which do a brilliant curry. Their jacket potato probably not so good but definately worth a visit.
The taxi service provided by the hotel is also dear but there is not much choice as the resort is quite secluded. There is a shuttle service so take advantage of this while you can.
The beauty of this resort is ultimate relaxation. Felt very relaxed after my week here.
The resort is just on the beach and contrary to a review on here about swimming in the sea, the sea is not too choppy for swimming. There is a designated swim area.
We did not use the spa but there are two massage huts on the resort which offer cheaper massages.

The only downside was that our key card to our room kept locking us out so we had to keep returning to reception to reactivate it.
I would definately return.

Been here for 6 days. Loved it. All the staff are fabulous. Food is excellent, ok, it's not as cheap as a street vendor, but alas those days have long gone....beach is lovely and loooooong....perfect for a morning walk.
The only downside is the sand gets too hot! But, we can hardly say its the hotels fault....
I will definitely stay here next year, and the year after etc etc....oh, the rooms are NOT tired at all. They are just perfect.
Added bonus is Wifi all throughout the hotel AND on the beach....perfect for watching nonsense on youtube!
The best pool villas are from 1-6... They have the best views over the ocean and are incredibly private..... Failing that, try to get a room on the corner, they have bigger balconies.....

5* hotel set in beautiful grounds overlooking a good beach. Staff are friendly and courteous and the breakfast we had included was very good. The rooms are a little tired and showing their age, they are also slightly smaller than other comparable hotels. Food is incredibly expensive and you are better off taking the bus or the 20 minute walk to the shops and restaurants on the edge of the resort. Flame and Chaba are definitely worth a visit. You will end up paying 50% less for a meal that is better than what the hotel will provide. Be prepared to be covered in pine needles when laying on the beach or by the pool (depending on wind direction). The single biggest failing of this hotel is their courtesy room policy. We asked for a cost to keep our room for an extra day as we had a late flight. We were quoted a "special" day rate of over 7,000 baht. The only thing special about the rate is that it is more expensive than booking a night directly through the hotel website!! They do provide a shower room and you are allocated 30 minutes. I did ask how a family of 4 is expected to shower and get ready in 30 minutes and I was just smiled at. The management team are also not very good at responding to emails either. I would have rated this visit 5 had it not been for the really poor service of the hotel during my check out experience.

Dear MMmmmmmm111mmmm,

We are grateful for your recent visit at Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket and for taking the time to write this review.

I am particularly pleased to read the comments on the staff being friendly and courteous as well as the good breakfast.

Our Restaurant prices are in line with the other 5 star resorts and include the assurance of the utmost level of hygiene which is not always the case in standalone eateries around.

May I apologize for the team not responding fast enough to your mails. Being in house, you could have had my immediate attention should you have asked for it.

I have reviewed the rate we offered for a day use in our resort to be more competitive. The rate you quoted was cheaper than the one on our Web, it was just for a different category.

I look forward to welcoming you back and demonstrate our genuine level of care to all our guests.

Warm regards,

Denis Thouvard

We have just returned from an 8 night stay at this lovely hotel, our last stop on our Thai holiday. We had a room overlooking the lagoon which we found very comfortable.
The outstanding memory of this hotel is of the staff and service which we found to be excellent. From the poolside attendant who brought towels to us at the other side of the pool when we were contemplating which sun bed to choose to the ladies who provided the turn down service and two orchids every day. Wherever we went in the hotel; restaurants, bars, reception, concierge, the service was exemplary.
The breakfast was very good, catering for every taste and nationality. We ate in all the restaurants and enjoyed all our meals. We also ate out at a couple of local restaurants as they collected us from the hotel then brought us back after our meal.
We visited the other hotels in the Laguna complex using either the shuttle boat or shuttle bus. Wi Fi was very good throughout the hotel and grounds, almost to the beach. We used to go for a walk along the lovely beach in the morning before breakfast before the heat of the day made it uncomfortable to do so.
This is a lovely hotel which I would recommend unreservedly ; one of the best we have stayed in abroad.

Dusit Thani Pool Villas can be recommended without hesitation. Comfortable, spacious and with a very responsive service. "Normal" hotel rooms however are outdated and need to be refurbished as soon as possible. The Dusit has one of the best locations on the island - the hotel park next to the beach is just magnificent. Service quality in general very good with no mistakes. Wifi Internet quality excellent. Breakfast for Pool Villa guests will be served in La Trattoria Restaurant which is much nicer and less crowded than the normal one. We tried dinner in La Trattoria and Ruen Thai and liked both - La Trattoria however was our favorite one: great location in the hotel park and tasty Italian dishes combined with local seafood.

Room Tip: Reserve a Pool Villa - ideally with sea view
